Hilarious to hear Max throwing all his toys out of the pram time and time again during that race. I hope he gets a real telling off for the way he was speaking to/about his team over the radio, that was disgraceful.

I have to confess that there was much laughter in our house when Max messed up overtaking Lewis that final time - and I was really pleased for Lewis to see him on the podium again.

I'm a bit torn on the Lando/Oscar team orders.

Yes, Oscar got ahead of Lando at the start. But then the team took the decision to pit Lando first and get him ahead. They could have pitted Oscar first instead and run Lando for longer on older tyres. So why should Lando then have to give up his victory?

It would be very interesting if Lando ended up finishing say, 6 points behind Max in the championship...

I don't know why Lando drove to cut Oscar off at the very start of the race knowing that Max is the real competition (Driver's Championship wise anyway) and that is TWICE that Lando has covered the P2 driver and not the P3 driver and it's going to end up costing him a race or two if he keeps doing it.
Max is really showing his true personality since he stopped winning races. This is what I'd imagine his team trailer will be like now that the race is over!

Lastly - delighted that Lando didn't break this year's trophy 😆

Crazy race - definitely not dull at all

Verstappen is pathetic and dangerous. He should be getting a harsh penalty but I will be surprised if he does.

Me and DH both laughed and cheered when he thought he was going to get past Lewis with that aggressive move. We were both hoping that would be the end of his race.

So sick of his arrogance always thinking he is right and everyone else is at fault plus forever moaning and whining.

FourToTheMFingFloor · 21/07/2024 16:26

Laughing at the idea of Max getting a telling off from RB. As if.

It's a shame really; he's incredibly gifted but also very young, and I don't think RB are doing much to help him mature. Just using and encouraging his aggressive hot-headedness to make them successful.

jennywasafriendofmrbrightside · 21/07/2024 16:28

Re-watching/listening to the interaction with Norris & Hamilton in the cool down room - Norris once again showing why he is just so unlikeable sometimes.

WinkyTinky · 21/07/2024 16:38

Crikey, a bit of excitement there! As has been said, I don't know what to make of the team orders thing. Kind of takes the shine off the victory for Oscar. I was wondering how they would react to each other after the race. As for Max, he has to learn to take defeats more graciously. The main thing though, Lando's helmet was beautiful! I want one!

TheBizzies · 21/07/2024 16:38

It's all the drama mick!! I just love it!

Sulusu · 21/07/2024 17:22

Main entertainment today was all the drama in the radio messages, aside from that quite a dull race. Hamilton Vs Verstappen was the highlight for me.

Not sure how I feel about the McLaren shenanigans, I think McLaren should have boxed Piastri first, but can see how Norris would be annoyed too.

Outside of the top runners Tsunoda had a really good race. He really has improved this year.

Perez had a better race and both he and Russell did well in the end after bad qualifying. I think Perez' seat is still in danger and I wouldn't be shocked if he gets replaced during the summer break. But by who? Surely Tsunoda should be included in that conversation now!

mydogisthebest · 21/07/2024 18:31

Oh surprise surprise Verstappen not penalised in any way by the stewards. What does he need to do for them to penalise him - injure another driver?

I know.

Also so surprising that the stewards said that even though overall it was no one's fault, it was Lewis' fault more than Max, because he should have done more to avoid Max when he locked up and drove in front of him Hmm

It's the same old story, isn't it, when it comes to Max and the stewards' decisions.

gingercat02 · 21/07/2024 19:54

Lewis himself said racing incident in his interview with Nico.
I thought it was a great race. This season has been so much better. 7 different winners 🏆
Sad for both Oscar and Lando for different reasons, but Lando does remind me of a spoilt toddler

He’s nearly 27, and firmly middle aged amongst the drivers on the track, eight are younger than he is including Russell, Norris, Piastri, Stroll and Leclerc. He’s driving his tenth F1 season. By the end of the season he will reach the 200 race starts milestone. There are only seven drivers in history to top 300. How old and experienced does he have to get before we just admit he’s an entitled and aggressive man?

FourToTheMFingFloor · 21/07/2024 20:14

I had it in my head he was 23!

He just seems immature then I guess; even more reason for someone to take him aside and tell him it's time to act like the big boy he is. But nobody will - unless and until he doesn't win the championship and his untouchable aura starts to dissipate.

witte · 21/07/2024 20:49

I think that totally pissed on Oscar's parade. No comparison to when lando got his first win.

I knew (hoped) Lando would give the place back but I also think Lando might have won anyway with his pace.

Max is growing on me but he's a massive baby on the radio. I love it Grin

GrouchyKiwi · 21/07/2024 21:10

Imagine getting told by your race engineer that you're being childish. Grin

I feel sad for Lando. I don't like him, but it wasn't right to make him give up that lead, especially given he's second in the Driver's Championship. It was badly done.

Delighted for Lewis getting his 200th podium.

goingdownfighting · 21/07/2024 22:36

Well that was all very awkward.

McLaren should have just let them race I think.

I was totally with Lando. Only give the place back at the very last minute. Swapping earlier would have only backed him up, and he has shown who the faster person was.

The team aren't looking at the bigger picture. The only person on the grid who can challenge Verstappen this season is Lando, and spreading out the points won't help. Let's see how many short Lando is at the end of the season and we shall see if it was the right decision.

I'm sad for Piastri. Not the best way to win.

Verstappen showing his true colours today. He confirmed my opinion of him. Quite a nasty man. Lewis doesn't bring the best out in him obviously, partly because he will not be bullied by him.

Anyway looking forward to the latter half of the season.

CelesteCunningham · 21/07/2024 22:37

Well that was tremendous fun. Grin

Interesting to see how things go at McLaren. I thought Lando was pretty classy in the interview with Rosberg, comment to Lewis was hilarious though.

Max Vs Lewis wasn't a big deal imo, if it had been for 15th it would already be forgotten. Shame Max couldn't hold back a little as he was clearly faster but oh well.

Lostworlds · 22/07/2024 07:12

I feel sad for Lando too but it felt very much that McLaren has decided this was going to be Piastris first win. Wasn’t a great way to win and he didn’t seem very excited about it.

I’m a Max fan but yesterday just felt embarrassing. He was just in a bad mood from the get go, fair enough being unhappy with the car but I was cringing listening to his radio.

I think Lando being rude to Lewis was just him reeling from giving up a win.

Tilda77 · 22/07/2024 07:38

Hopefully the disappointment Lando feels will give him the fire in his belly to out race Oscar the rest of the season so this situation doesn't happen again. I'm hoping that McLaren now put everything in to helping Lando fight Max for the championship. Like others have said let's hope he's not a few points short at the end of the season!

mydogisthebest · 22/07/2024 08:10

Verstappen is a horrible person. Swearing and giving abuse to his team over the radio. Too much like his dad unfortunately.

He was only in a bad mood because he had some competition in the race and he seems unable to cope well with that.

You could tell his engineer was getting sick of him, he even told he was being childish which was the understatement of the century.

GrouchyKiwi · 22/07/2024 08:10

What did Lando say to Lewis? They didn't show that on the highlights programme on Channel 4.

Wakemeuuuup · 22/07/2024 08:52

Verstappen showed his true self yesterday. I thought he had matured over the last few years but clearly not.

I felt so sorry for both McLaren drivers. That was an awful way for Piastri to win his 1st race. I also think that if they had brought him in 1st Norris would probably have passed him on track

I heard Norris's comment to Hamilton on the C4 highlights. He's another spoilt brat

Well done Hamilton for his 200th podium, that is amazing.

elessar · 22/07/2024 09:21

Such an entertaining race!

Totally bungled by McLaren and I really felt for Piastri as it really took the shine off his first win. Lando was clearly quicker in the final stint, and so it really was a gifted victory - on the other hand, if they'd pitted him first then there's a decent chance he'd have been able to hang on to win on merit. It was just a lose lose situation that they created, Lando was clearly resentful (no doubt not least that he's only had one victory and been in F1 for years, and this is Oscar's second season - it must make it a bitter pill to swallow to be technically level on wins.)

I thought Lando's response to Lewis in the cool down room was pretty awful and he really showed a lack of grace. And I noticed that although he did congratulate Piastri after the race, he seemed almost to deliberately avoid spraying him on the podium. It all felt very awkward.

I was entertained by Max on the radio. I do find it hilarious how short his memory is, with comments like "oh we just race by pushing people off now do we" when he's pretty much made a career out of doing that - and when he did the totally unrealistic divebomb on Lewis, when just a couple of weeks ago he was complaining about Lando dive bombing him at Austria and saying that's not how you should overtake. The fact that even GP was clearly sick of his behaviour says a lot I think. I'm glad he finished down the order a bit.

Unfortunately Red Bull have created this culture where Max is never made to take responsibility for issues he causes and allowed to get away with riding rough shod over the rules - and this is the consequence. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Max did jump ship to another team (like Merc) - would he be allowed to get away with behaving the way he does at RB?

lighthouse26 · 22/07/2024 09:23

It was an interesting race. I feel for both McLaren drivers. I get it from the teams point of view and the drivers.

Saw this comment on Facebook this morning. It's an excuse I haven't heard yet 😅

What did Lando say to Lewis? They didn't show that on the highlights programme on Channel 4.

They actually did, which is unusual in itself as they never normally show anything from the cool down room.

Lewis said "wow you guys were fast" and Lando said "you had a fast car 7 years ago", then Lewis replied "7 years ago? Were you even here 7 years ago? I wasn't complaining I was just complimenting your car." It was a very odd interaction, as it came over as a real clap back from Lando to a remark that was very innocuous and inoffensive from Hamilton.
