Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.

@AndNobbyDancing I'm Manchester United.

I had a ST since 1987 and then gave it up in 2005 as part of the ownership protests. Had DS and went back. He never had a choice really. He always said he'd have been homeless if he wasn't a red, but he loves it.

I know people think we'll be stronger this year, and we will but we have a lot of problems. Still got the ownership hanging over our heads, and of course at the moment there is the Greenwood situation. Both, I think could cause a lot of tension and will hamper us. Hopefully not and thinking we could get 2nd.

I thought the rest of the top 4 will be Liverpool and Arsenal/Chelsea. But then Newcastle looked better than expected yesterday.

I had Wolves, Sheffield United and Bournemouth to go down. Was hoping Luton would do ok. Also thought Burnley would get top table, not sure their first game against City is a good indication of how they'll do.

Good to have it back, don't half miss it.

Just so long as we don't get get all cup games at home this season, I'll be happy. Cost me a fortune last season.

CumbrianExile · 13/08/2023 09:17

Another Manchester United fan here. A child hood Lee Sharpe crush is to blame and I have had a season ticket since 2006 after moving to Manchester. Feeling you on the costly season last year @Hellohah 😫

Both DS are slowly getting into football and are currently United. The youngest (4yo) came to two games last season with me, and this year the oldest (9yo) is showing much more interest and wants to come to a game this year.

Top 4 will be City, Arsenal, Man Utd and Newcastle I think. Not sure of the order though.

Just can't wait to get the season started - a monday evening kick off for our first game seems such a long wait 😂

CumbrianExile · 13/08/2023 09:20

Should add I do have a soft spot for Carlisle United, and was delighted when they won the play off last year.

And my Grandad played for Arbroath back in the day. Was born up there and only left to move to England to play football. So I also have a soft spot for them @Tarkan

imed · 13/08/2023 14:27

Hull City fan here.
Guaranteed a life of pain and suffering only relieved by the occasional joy of a win like yesterday's against our Yorkshire rivals.
And a hat-trick for Tufan was the icing on the cake!

Hi. Delurking to introduce myself.

I’m a Man City supporter and have been since I was a kid, although the extent to which I follow them has waxed and waned a bit over the last 40 years. I enjoyed supporting the underdog so initially struggled a bit with their transition to super team. Dd (10) is City obsessed though and has been for the last 3 years or so, so that’s rekindled my City love. We don’t live in Manchester but get to go to matches fairly often as most of my extended family are season ticket holders and offer us their seats when they can’t attend.

Dd had city paraphernalia before she became interested in football and my uncles had launched a targeted campaign from the off, so when she started following football she didn’t get a lot of choice. I would have been upset if she’d followed Arsenal or Chelsea.

Like @Xhakalaka I have a soft spot for Brentford. They’re my local team (although I can’t quite hear them from ours). I used to go and watch them when they were Div 1/2. If any team were going to beat City twice last season, I’m happy it was the Bees.

I’ll go with City, Arsenal, Newcastle and United as the top 4 spots. In that order. I’d like Newcastle to come 2nd though.

Sat in bed, having just watched Chelsea v Liverpool. Emotionally exhausted from the whole weekend, 15+ hours of matches.

DuncinToffee · 13/08/2023 19:09

15+ hours of matches, dedication

I watched 3 yesterday, 2 world cup games and the Everton game and that felt like an overload Smile

the whole Kane thing has been bonkers here (in Germany) this weekend.
I was at a party in a hotel yesterday, but the Leipzig match was on in the tv in one of the bars. I watched a bit with some young German chaps. They were very excited to see Kane. Loved the video Bayern put out.
Can't wait to see him live when Bayern come up to us in a few weeks. Traditionally we are the team that somehow beats them, so we'll see what happens.

Tarkan · 13/08/2023 22:57

Oh that's fab @CumbrianExile - when did he play up here?

CumbrianExile · 14/08/2023 08:20

@Tarkan Back in the late 1940's. He left to move to Burnley in 1950ish. He also played for Southport, Preston and Workington Reds where he met my Grandma and stopped playing.

Tarkan · 14/08/2023 08:31

Oh that's fab @CumbrianExile - sounds like he had a great career. Weirdly I have links to Workington as my late aunt was from that area and we used to holiday in Cockermouth to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins before they moved up this way. Grin

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 14/08/2023 09:19

Arsenal fan here. Can't believe that everyone thinks we will finish top four. I hope that isn't the kiss of death.

I have no idea who will finish in the top four. Man City will probably win the league again, but I think that this season will be the most competitive ever and anyone could get the CL places.

I obviously hope that we finish top four but the PL seems to be getting stronger and stronger each year. There are so few really weak teams now.

Newcastle looked so solid on Saturday. The newspaper write up I read said that they expected them to drop points further on. But why? Next week's match against Man City will be interesting.

Really hope Luton stay up but I doubt they will.

Oblomov23 · 14/08/2023 13:49

Villa, Diaby, 24 years old I think. Looks good. Why on earth can't Spurs sign a young striker like him. We are gonna get undone, quickly, by Man Utd next week I fear.

CumbrianExile · 14/08/2023 17:06

Small world @Tarkan I was born in Workington and lived there til I left for Uni at 18. Hence the username!

First game for me tonight, and as per usual in Manchester it is raining!

Oblomov23 · 14/08/2023 20:55

Enjoying seeing Wolves hold their own against Man U till 1/2 time.

Where has Man U been ? Where is Anthony and Rashford? 4 touches?

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 14/08/2023 21:19

If Antony is worth £100 million, what price Martinelli?! Or Saka?!

It said on the bbc that you were interested in Balogun. I don't understand why we don't want to keep him. He must have had a falling out with Arteta.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 14/08/2023 21:52

I'm with you on that. I'd love to see him get a chance. It's a slightly different approach, but not beyond us, and not having a plan B was an issue at times last season.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 14/08/2023 21:53

And I don't want to sell him to Sp*rs!

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 14/08/2023 22:15

How tf wasn't that a penalty?

From twitter;

"Reminder that from 4th December 1993 to 20th April 2004, Man United had only three penalties awarded against them in the PL at Old Trafford.

That’s THREE penalties against them in exactly 200 home PL games. Fergie's still working his magic from the stands."

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2023 22:38

Wolves are Everton in disguise?

OP posts:
YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 14/08/2023 22:43

I'm old enough to remember when Wolves were given a penalty for this. And David Luiz got a red card...

we have the PL on Sky (Germany) and there is a shiny new option of having the original commentary.

Why do football commentators speak in that really weird cadence?

Well, it looks like the whole of Europe want him but we don't.
