Football fans join in to share the joy, the heartache and VAR frustration ⚽

The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.

it's bugging me that Newcastle aren't playing in their home strip. German commentators going on and on about how both teams are "workers" clubs.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 07/11/2023 18:47

Enjoy the match tonight. And even though I'm not particularly fond of the cheating Magpies at the moment, I hope you win!

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 07/11/2023 19:42

Today in "things you didn't know you needed to see";

Thierry Henry finishing David Beckham's crisps...

Thierry Henry could finish my crisps any day and I don't even let DH do that. Grin

Beckham's face is amazing there though. 😂

Oblomov23 · 07/11/2023 20:28

I didn't watch the spurs v Chelsea game because I was out with friends. But oh my Lord. So angry with rash Romero, and immature udogie. Very sad about VdV. And also Maddison possible injury.

What a poor show!

AndNobbyDancing · 07/11/2023 21:24

Agree, I have a real issue with ill discipline.

Dortmund is a bit of a weird town - Düsseldorf would have been a better bet but you don't get the BVB fans there.

Have you been to the football museum? that's a lot of fun (you can vote on the 1966 goal...) and if you go in a football shirt, everyone will talk to you and be hugely knowledgeable about the entirety of English football. (opposite the main station)

Just seen this now. DH was keen to go to the football museum but yesterday was all about building the atmosphere in markt square, there was a DJ etc on for the fans. Such good fun. Ended up being interviewed for sky sports which I understand was showed several times throughout the day. Shame about the result but our squad is worse than threadbare, Wilson went off with a tight hamstring to add to our woes.

I never want to see another pint of lager again. 🤣🤣🤣

Our travel home has been a bit of a disaster so far.

We had 17 mins for our connection to Amsterdam, initial train was well over 40 mins late and still hadn’t arrived. Jumped on another train to a different destination. Now waiting for another connection and hoping it isn’t running late as only have 30 mins if on time to get to the boat back to the NE.

Interesting from Keith Hackett, and says something about the integrity of both the PGMOL and the pundits involved;

Former referee Keith Hackett has claimed that phone calls were made instructing pundits to quieten down in their criticism of officials, following Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle United.

Over the weekend, Arsenal were the victim of a couple of poor refereeing decisions.

Bruno Guimaraes got away with hitting Jorginho in the head without so much as a yellow card, before Newcastle’s goal was allowed to stand despite a clear foul on Gabriel Magalhaes in the build-up.

Yet much of the post-match analysis has focused on Mikel Arteta’s response to the poor decisions, rather than on the decisions themselves.

Indeed, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have been particularly outspoken in backing the referees against Arteta’s complaints.

Though former referee Keith Hackett didn’t name Neville or Carragher specifically, he claims to have been made aware of phone calls to instruct people to play down criticism of match officials.

“I was aware of the two people receiving a phone call and instructed to [toe] the line and to quieten down in the criticism of match officials,” Hackett claimed.

“Anyone involved in football saw the push (on Gabriel) and at that point, the goal should have been ruled out.”

Football insider Team News and Ticks made a similar claim, suggesting that Howard Webb has given Sky Sports more access to referees in return for Neville and Carragher giving them an easy ride.

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 08/11/2023 18:57

So it seems Napoli have had a goal disallowed for a push...

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 08/11/2023 23:43

VAR seems to have worked OK tonight.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 09/11/2023 07:58

This ball was judged to have been out on Tuesday night, Dortmund scored from the resulting throw in. It’s all swings and roundabouts and settles all down to be even in the end.

Now the premier league are planning on voting on a temporary ban on deals between associated party clubs. Quickest way to get anything banned is to say Newcastle are thinking about it 🤣🙄

VAR seems to have worked OK tonight.

Irony moment there I assume! However, even without the questionable red card and penalties, Man Utd played poorly in the 2nd half especially. Wan Bissaka (who Ten Hag initially thought was rubbish) made a welcome return and Høijland is one of only a few players who looks as if he's making an effort.

@EddieHowesShithousingMags Sounds as if you had a good time in Germany, even if the result wasn't what you wanted. I think clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern and Inter Milan have a huge advantage because they are involved in the Champions League every year. Next year will be different. Anyway, the Carabao Cup is definitely looking like it will have black and white ribbons this year.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 09/11/2023 08:29

I can honestly say that I’ve had the best few days, the result was a complete side note. We’re just enjoying being back, taking it all in, meeting new people and fans. A really great experience.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 09/11/2023 08:31

I’d love to win the league cup but it’s probably nailed on Liverpool will beat us in the semis - unless West Ham can do a job for us in the quarters! (Assuming we beat Chelsea)

burblish · 09/11/2023 14:37

@EddieHowesShithousingMags You said: “It’s all swings and roundabouts and settles all down to be even in the end.”

I agree - every single club will have questionable VAR/referee decisions go both for and against them at some point in the course of the season. Some clubs will have more decisions going against them than for them overall. Some instances will be more egregious or clear cut than others (epitomised by the Luis Diaz goal VAR fiasco that Liverpool suffered!); others will be more open to debate and your take on them is always going to be influenced by whether your own club is impacted.

I for one don’t believe there is a hidden agenda to either favour or particularly punish any given club when it comes to VAR or on-field decisions. Totally fine to call out specific decisions you think are wrong, but not everything has a hidden conspiracy behind it. It’s a human game, however much tech is applied (or misapplied!), and humans are fallible. What concerns me more, tbh, is the way common sense seems to have flown out of the window when it comes to judging handballs and serious foul play - it will be interesting to see if IFAB are willing to look at those rules again at their annual business meeting at the end of this month.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2023 19:02

Luis Diaz' father has been freed.

Luis Diaz' father has been freed.

Yes, such a relief!

YouOnlyCameToSeeEboue · 09/11/2023 19:20

Some good news at last

burblish · 09/11/2023 19:43

And just to make my point again re handball nonsense, Liverpool goal against Toulouse has been chalked off for handball about 7 passes before the goal. Just bizarre. Oh well - fortunately, the loss won’t mean anything, but one of the strangest VAR decisions I’ve ever seen.

Oblomov23 · 09/11/2023 19:44

Watching the Liverpool v Toulouse game. Can't get over the last goal disallowed for previous hand ball!

Oblomov23 · 09/11/2023 19:46

No. Both commentators, female and Joe Cole both saying it WAS hand ball.

burblish · 09/11/2023 19:48

What would they know? 😁Clearly, as a Liverpool fan, I know better, innit!

TheSleepingGiant · 11/11/2023 17:40

Chose a good day to go to work, not seen any matches but disappointed with the Spurs and Gills scores

DuncinToffee · 11/11/2023 19:17

Haven't seen any matches either but hearing the Everton score on 5live in the car home was good Grin

Good day generally for us. Shame about Vieira, but I can't complain about that one.

Although I notice that Saka got pulled up for a nudge on someone in the penalty area. He probably should have just pushed him with 2 hands and it would have been fine, or something...
