What an utterly wonderful example of a human he is.

What a brilliant young man and a fantastic example for kids today.

To all the racists out there trying to tear him down. Fuck you.

He’s handled a situation he shouldn’t ever have been in, with grace and dignity and none of the players have anything to apologise for. Not a football fan but very proud of them all and people making the vile comments should aspire to be more like him.

GoBrookeYourself · 13/07/2021 02:35

RumblyMumbly

You are spectacularly missing the point. Supporters are well aware they lost and those young players bottled the penalties. The players themselves know they bottled them. We are supporting them because they don't deserve racist abuse for doing their job when representing their country. They are fine sportsmen and have done better than teams for years while conducting themselves with dignity.

This sums up what I wanted to say more articulately than I could.

FlamingHot · 13/07/2021 03:02

My football loving 16yr old ds was appalled by the racist attacks against him. I'm glad he's appalled because it has brought to his attention that even the brightest, most commendable young men can be targeted with this vile hatred. A reminder that whilst most of us are horrified, that nasty germ of racism still exists and we must continue the fight to extinguish it.

Marcus Rashford is a first class example of a young man, it's great to have someone in his position setting such a great example. If my ds grows up to be anything like him I will be enormously proud.

I also agree with the poster who said Gareth Southgate has shown excellent, compassionate and responsible leadership. Another man to be admired as an example to our sons. Good to see when the current male 'leaders' of our country are an absolute disgrace.

@areyouadogperson

I wonder how many of these racists on Twitter last night and the fighting thugs in London had food in their kids stomachs over the last year because of Marcus Rashford.
🥺 What an amazing point

Do you remember football in the 90s? The England team was full of ostentatious shaggers famous for cheating on their wags and going to strip clubs and wearing expensive clothes as far as I can remember. I always thought that they were terrible role models for young men. It really feels like that's changed a bit with this new generation of footballers. Sure lots of them are probably still awful but there seem to be a good number of really decent people among them.

Bananasarnie · 13/07/2021 06:43

Marcus has been a wonderful inspiration throughout the pandemic. Incredibly moving and I can’t think of a better role model for my children ❤️

TheWatersofMarch · 13/07/2021 08:55

I read it last night. What a stellar person he is. He's the best of British. I felt very emotional too. The racists are not worth the dirt on his shoe. I hate them with a passion. How dare they.

Lampzade · 13/07/2021 09:07

@Ghosttile

For those who are in a position to donate money, this is the food redistribution charity he has worked with, that will be helping to ensure children are fed over the summer holidays

fareshare.org.uk/

If you can donate money or groceries, The Trussell Trust have food banks all over the place.

www.trusselltrust.org/

Or google for independent food banks in your area.

It would be nice if something good came out of all this hate.

Thanks for this

Absolutely agree

He writes beautifully.

23 and achieved so much, he's wonderful.

RubyViolet · 13/07/2021 12:33

To think some of the people abusing him may well have kids that were fed over the holidays because of his actions to help kids !

GrealishHairband · 13/07/2021 12:35

I saw one of his previous tweets (not related to this) that said one of the racially motivated messages he had received was from a maths teacher with an open profile.

The measure of the man he is though is shown in his response to that which was along the lines of not how hurt he was but ‘I’m so disappointed he has the capacity to teach children and yet this is what he does’.

Totally agree. I love this England team.
MistySkiesAfterRain · 13/07/2021 17:39

England coaching has gone through a revolution it seems, building sport from the grass roots up, supporting players, learning from the past. So much credit has to be given to these young players for stepping up to their responsibility and being great role models and for their decent behavior.

That is exactly what I said to my dh the other night. I’ve never been so proud of an England team before. They have conducted themselves with dignity and respect. It’s about time our young men (and old) had proper role models.

Without taking anything away from the current players and their behaviour both on and off the field, maybe we only saw the "laddish" or unsociable behaviour from footballers in the past? They may well have donated to charities but maybe that was not a great news story for the tabloids?
Social media has given the players themselves a platform to engage with the public and raise awareness of causes they are passionate about. Almost forcing the press to notice them and engage with the issues they're highlighting.

Maybe we only saw the more tawdry behaviour of previous football teams because that's what we were told?
