I'm intrigued 🤔

Me too!

Normandy144 · 11/07/2021 23:21

Because no one wants the runners up medal. They wanted to win. They should be proud of themselves and I'm sure in time they will, but they don't want a medal reminding them they lost.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:21

I Googled it and they did it in rugby apparently it was a sore loser thing 🤷‍♀️

HelpLegalAdvicePlease · 11/07/2021 23:21

Because they're sore losers and don't want to wear 'second place' medals.

LavenderAskew · 11/07/2021 23:21

Not unique to England..

Ginger1982 · 11/07/2021 23:21

Sore losers.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:22

Oh right sore loser thing then? Is that okay?

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 11/07/2021 23:22

I wondered that.

Marmite27 · 11/07/2021 23:22

DH said it’s because they didn’t want a losers medal. I thought it was very disrespectful.

I also always wonder when they get the box for it? Whenever they’re shown at auction, in collections etc they’re always in a box?

Same for knighthoods, military and Olympic medals.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 23:22

Because it’s the shitty ah well done for completing the tournament. I wouldn’t want to put that on right now either.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:22

I mean shouldn't they just accept the medal? Seems a bit churlish

@Opalfeet

I think it's a bit petty to be honest.
Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:23

Yeah, I thought you are supposed to show good sportsmanship and all that.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 23:23

I’m sure they don’t lob it in the dressing room bin.

They just don’t want to parade around with it.

megletthesecond · 11/07/2021 23:23

It's a bit rude.

TolkiensFallow · 11/07/2021 23:23

I though Southgate was teaching them to be gracious players. Sore loser doesn’t fit with his methods

HelpLegalAdvicePlease · 11/07/2021 23:24

We're all agreed then. Just disrespectful. Sets an awful example as well.

EmeraldShamrock · 11/07/2021 23:24

Sore losers unfortunately it was tough. I'm really sad for the young men who missed the penalty but be gracious when you lose too. Henderson didn't he is a beaut and gracious.

MaggieFS · 11/07/2021 23:25

I thought it was a bit disrespectful. They could have waited a bit?

I completely understand it isn't like 100m at the Olympics where they award gold, silver & bronze, but even so.

SweetGrapes · 11/07/2021 23:25

Was just discussing this... So rude. At least wait a little. We all get the disappointment but be a good sport.

Sidesaladofchips · 11/07/2021 23:25

Rude and disrespectful. Like spoilt little toddlers.

Gooseberrypies · 11/07/2021 23:26

Sore losers... a19 year old lad was literally choked to the ground by their dirty cheating captain. Complete farce, Italy got away with so many underhand tactics there. I'd be pissed off too. Who wants a reminder they've just lost? Humiliating, especially when they didn't deserve it.

Opalfeet · 11/07/2021 23:26

There was a few that didn't take it off in front of the camera, no idea what they did in the next few mins. I find it a bit weird.

OP posts:
Normandy144 · 11/07/2021 23:26

They do accept the medal - it gets put around their necks. It's pretty common to be honest. It's not being sore losers - they've congratulated Italy. Their professional sports people with natural competitive streaks they don't want a medal reminding them of the loss.

RightOnTheEdge · 11/07/2021 23:26

I thought it seemed a bit rude to take them off so quickly.
