I've had a persistent ear infection over the last month. I've almost finished my third round of drops and one round of amoxicillin this week. No more pain and I can hear about 90% from that ear. I looked inside with my new camera and saw this 🤢 I don't want to dare start digging around as it was so painful the last month and has only just stopped making me feel unwell. I have a follow up gp appointment on 11th July but not sure if I should ask to bring it forward. I've also had micro suction twice in that time!

If the infection has gone then gently warmed (not hot) olive oil can help soften that solid-looking dried-up plug you have. a couple of drops and plug the ear with a cotton ball to stop it from dripping out. Will make it easier to remove with micro-suction.
Olive oil is pretty inert and gentle and shouldn't irritate your ear.

I specifically use TikTok for these ear cleaning videos 😂 amazing !

I remember having a horrid ear infection years ago that needed a couple of rounds of antibiotics. I tried olive oil and some drops from the doc then back for some more - think they were sodium bicarbonate or something.

Anyway, I put the second lots of drops in before bed and when I woke up my pillow (with a towel on) was covered in the wax. There was loads. Oh the relief!

Sadly, it was before the days of camera phones, so no!!

I have just purchased an ear camera on the back of this thread.

I've got some olive oil drops. Now the infection has gone I will put in a couple of drops a day to soften for a couple of weeks. I'm hoping the wax will fall out but it might need suctioning again!

OP you’re rocking my world with this right now!! 😍😍😍

WaitingForMojo · 28/06/2024 19:48

Don’t put olive oil or water in your ear if the drum might be perforated!

Oldraver · 28/06/2024 19:53

I bought an ear camera for £15 as I was convinced my ears must be full of wax . There was nothing so I did save myself £80 for having them sucked out...result

Dontsayyouloveme · 28/06/2024 19:56

I don’t have anything wrong with my ears luckily but I still want to buy a little camera that I didn’t know existed… 😬

This was recommended by the GP. I had an appointment today. Otex sell small bottles. The infection has gone and they don't think there's any perforation.

My DH has heard me whinging about my ear infection for the past month. I very proudly showed him the photo yesterday and he was disappointingly uninterested! My mum was intrigued and I hoped sporners corner would be a good place for it 😬

I was getting ear infections so bought a camera. OMFG I LOVE THAT THING!
I now use Ear Calm spray every now and then and it prevents infections. And my ears are kept completely clean,

unsync · 29/06/2024 06:53

I use Earol Swim spray which is olive oil but with tea tree oil in it too. Originally because I kept getting infections from swimming, but it has made a huge difference to the health of my ears. It really helps keep things moving. I have a camera too. 😊

BoobyDazzler · 29/06/2024 06:57

I bought one of these a few years ago because I had an ear infection and blocked ear from swimming on holiday. I’d been fobbed off by the doctors, tried the drops and the oil and nothing made any difference.

Within about ten minutes of the ear cam arriving I’d hoiked out a solid lump of wax the size of a bean! The relief was instantaneous.

unfortunately the wax bean blew off the table and down between the gaps in my deck, so I don’t have an evidence - I was gutted! But I could hear again so all was well in the world 🤣

Amsx · 29/06/2024 07:03

My ears are clean as a whistle thanks to my ear camera. DH won't let me near his Grin

Mindymomo · 29/06/2024 07:14

Can you put camera in other ear to see what level of wax is in that one to compare. It looks nicely healed, not very red at all. My DH has a perforated eardrum and has been told to never put anything in ears, plus no water. He has had micro suction a few times to get rid of the wax by a professional. I definitely wouldn’t try and get the hard wax out yourself.

perimumma · 29/06/2024 07:23

Have you tried a Hopi ear candle?

friskybivalves · 29/06/2024 08:00

Jumping on this bandwagon... is it the Vitcoco or the Hopefox that people are buying (cccrazy names!)

The GP said for me to soften sign olive oil for the next couple of weeks. Then they can hopefully see past the ear drum, but they don't think it's perforated or that the infection is still there. I've had micro suction twice already and the precious audiologist wouldn't go digging that far close to my ear drum. The discharge was wet at the time and apparently the doctor said it's a good thing it's now dried which means no inflammation
