What?

I get these lumps on my lip almost constantly, they are hard to burst (though this one looks riper than most) and by the time they've died down I usually have another one. Prime placements are here, or right hand near corner, or top left near cupids bow.

I know it looks like a white head but it won't burst. Previously I've popped a needle in which has helped but can't be good to do all the time!

I don't think they're cold sores - no tingling or scabbing - but Google will only give me that answer.

Any ideas?

Herpes

I get those, I thought they were cold sores. Is herpes different?

junbean · 19/11/2023 21:43

Do you have a nervous habit of rubbing your skin there? I used to do this. Or rub my chin. The only time I get a blemish it's from rubbing my skin and clogging a pore. I would see a doctor though, could be something else.

That's what cold sores are. One and the same.

No I don't think so. I do think I got more of them when I moisturised ( so I stopped)

Should there be a photo?

Is it not just a spot?

Do you use another product, like lip balm? Maybe an allergy to something? Maybe it's just acne. Or maybe you need to exfoliate that area. I've heard using a dedicated soft bristled toothbrush on/around the lips is a good way to do it.

ditalini · 19/11/2023 21:51

I get these sometimes and yes, they're hard to pop. I have more success in drying them out with something astringent.

Thinking about it, I've not had one for ages. Probably the only upside to ageing is that I finally appear to be "growing out" of these (aged 50+).

Looks like a spot lower lip and crusting herpes/cold sore upper lip midline.

I thought someone might say that but weirdly/ coincidentally I think it's the light. That's just my lip and always has been!

Might there be a certain lipstick or lip balm that you use just prior to one appearing? It took me a while to cotton on that I’d get a cold sore after using my favourite, discontinued lipstick, which I only wore once every few months. Not saying that what you have is a cold sore, it looks like a spot, but it may be that you’re transferring the bacteria.

CeilingWacks · 19/11/2023 21:57

It does look more like a regular whitehead than a cold sore - I get these too sometimes. In my experience, they're harder to pop because they're so much more painful! I use a very hot flannel on it for a few minutes first (but you're probably not "meant" to try and pop them at all....)

OhpoorMe · 19/11/2023 22:00

No, no lipsticks or lip balms. To only thing regularly in my face is toothpaste!

It's just weird that the only place I get spots (if that's what they are) is right in my lip line and there's nearly always one ( but only ever one!). Perhaps try exfoliating as a PP said

Definitely not a cold sore as I get them in a similar place every few years, and once I mistook it for a whitehead and popped... A WORLD of hideous crusty pain ensued.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 19/11/2023 22:17

Give a warm compress a go. Should soothe it and encourage it to the surface. I would avoid bursting them if possible. Could be that you have little ingrown hairs that have annoyingly decided to be on your lip line.

Hellocatshome · 19/11/2023 22:25

Just a spot, lip spots are always quite painful to pop.

ODFOx · 19/11/2023 22:36

Put a colloid plaster on overnight to see if it takes out the fluid. It does look like a coldsore to me. If you don't scratch or burst it then it won't crust.

FrancisSeaton · 19/11/2023 22:39

Looks like a cold sore to me (looks fluid filled and that cold sore shape if that makes sense

palmtreesoliveleaves · 19/11/2023 22:44

Looks like a cold sore to me. I get them and they start like that.

PaperSky · 19/11/2023 22:44

The top lip looks like a cold sore
The bottom looks like a spot.
Cold sores are loads of small fluid filled bumps together, not one big one.

Jellybean23 · 19/11/2023 22:51

Rather than trying to pop it, try rubbing an emery board on the spot to break the surface.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 20/11/2023 10:59

Could it be hormonal? My mum always used to get a spot on her chin at a certain point in her cycle.

FrozenGhost · 20/11/2023 11:04

Sorry OP but it looks exactly like a cold sore. I get a lot of them and it's a typical appearance. They don't always tingle and/or scab.
