Help me - infected cyst

Hello sporners, my first time posting in here!

I’ve had a tiny little lump in my armpit for as long as I can remember. It’s never bothered me until I woke up Thursday morning in agony and it had swelled to the size of a golf ball.

I went to my local walk in centre who confirmed the cyst is infected and prescribed antibiotics but it’s getting bigger and more painful.

I’ve been using a warm compress, is there anything more I can do? Should I go back up and ask them to lance it? Should I try and pop it?

Picture attached for your enjoyment.

Oh thank goodness! I bet that's a relief. Cover it in savlon and a lint dressing type thing, to catch any overnight leakage.

Pulling the skin at the sides apart is better than pressing. Less painful, as you are touching the skin where it isn't sore.

picklemewalnuts · 22/10/2022 21:20

Hot salty water to bathe it, too. Now it's open, bath may not be the best idea.

AlternativelyWired · 22/10/2022 21:23

Oh how wonderful! It's a beauty OP! Shame there's no green gunge pictures though.

YoSofi · 22/10/2022 21:25

I really tried for pictures but it’s in such an awkward place I needed both hands and I’m on my own tonight. Bath is shallow so not near the beast, and I’ve not put any product in just incase. I have my flannel and then I’ll apply savlon and cover it before bed.

My ex husband has kindly volunteered to photograph any further developments tomorrow. He is also a sporner 😊

I’ll remember that thank you, there’s definitely more to come!

I am thankful to your ex-husband being dedicated to the cause 🙌🏼

And now the thicker good stuff.

Still very red but swelling nowhere near as bad. The tip to gently pull the skin apart is working far better than squeezing!

Hopefully you'll get some relief now it's popped. Excellent pics !

YoSofi · 22/10/2022 22:24

The relief was instantaneous, it’s covered in savlon now and has a lint free dressing over it so hopefully I’ll get a decent sleep 🤞

I have to be honest and say I popped mine. It was ready to erupt , put a sterilised needle in it then squeezed- so.much stuff came out. Then hot compress with salted water. TCP etc.
Obviously that's BAD advice but I couldn't bare it any longer, it was hot and painful so its what what I did . I'm still alive.
However unless you can get the sac out it might come back it so whatever you do go to GP and asked to be referred to have it removed, particularly as its in your armpit.
Hot baths/ compresses with warm salted water will help and youve you've got anti biotics so that's good. It will go down itself or pop by itself eventually but might take a week or two although with antibiotics hopefully will be quicker.
Hope it goes soon, I know how uncomfortable and painful they can be.

Runnerduck34 · 22/10/2022 22:34

Just seen its popped!
Hooray! It will start to heal now but ime might weap more gunk for a up to a week.

AlternativelyWired · 22/10/2022 22:36

Awww you're a trooper! Thanks for the photos 😃

Nonimai · 22/10/2022 22:58

use a facecloth as a compress, wetted in hot water with Epsom salts.

summergone · 22/10/2022 22:59

Chances are the sac is still in there if it's a lump you have had for ages . I had one on my back the dr numbed it , got the scalpel out sliced my back and squeezed the sac out .

YoSofi · 22/10/2022 23:02

The walk in centre did tell me to see my doctor to have the sac removed once the infection had cleared up so I’ll definitely do that, thank you

Yeah was also going to say keep an eye on it in future as unlikely to disappear completely.

I have one on my neck that has only come up like that once but can always feel it and it often comes up a bit. Magnesium sulphate paste works well to get on top of it early so get a few tubs to keep in the house

Mariposista · 22/10/2022 23:21

YEEEEOUCH that is a blinder! You have way more self control than me. I would have popped it ages ago (and probably made it worse haha)

Humobean · 22/10/2022 23:26

Yikes! I'd one like that and was on antibiotics when it burst. Shortly afterwards I could see something black like barbed wire poking out:

8 coiled ingrown hairs!

Hope you are feeling some relief.

Humobean · 22/10/2022 23:33

Behold the 8 😁

EIGHT?? That’s amazing and disgusting in equal measure 😂

Final picture of my little beast, it is so much better today!

Excellent stuff, OP!

columbo83 · 23/10/2022 11:48

Glad it's getting better

Humobean · 23/10/2022 12:02

Mine started out as a lump too and was there for a while. Dr said it was a blocked hair follicle so I just left it alone. Then one day it started to swell.

I would not be at all surprised if you had ingrown hairs there.

Lindengericht · 24/10/2022 23:05

How are you now @YoSofi ?
