Go at it from the side rather than the top. You want the needle parallel to your leg.

Definitely be more forceful. That looks as if it could be magnificent when the hair comes out. We haven't had any ingrowing hairs for so long in this house. I'm going to make dh start shaving with cold water and cheap razors again to try and rectify this problem.

You need to sort of go down but also through - so not straight down (according to DH who is a dentist and has experience of lancing abscesses lucky bastard). Make sure everything is very clean including hands. I must say, he's a right miserable git and doesn't think anyone should be doing this about their person due to the risk of infection

Have you sat with a lump of cotton wool soaked in hot water and place on it with out burning yourself, to soften the skin. Should help, failing that have you got a stanley blade, brand new and sterilised, just using the corner, not slicing it I hasten to add, may work better than your needle.

Failing that you need to get the poster who lives nearest you to come round to assist. Unfortunstely I'm on the NE coast so unable to offer my services.
