*KLAXON* cyst leaking - pictures

My DS has had this cyst since birth, it's always been small and unobtrusive.
This last week it's doubled in size and has been sore and red.
It's started leaking yellow gunk bit DS won't let anyone touch it.
He's saying it really hurts.
What if anything can I do?

Take her to a GP? It could be infected and she may need antibiotics.

Sorry HIM! Also from there you can get a referral to a dermatologist who can remove it properly. If you squeeze it yourself it is very likely to come back.

Is it a branchial cleft cyst? Has it been looked at by a Dr at any point?

I thought brachial cleft cyst too as ds had one and had to have an operation to remove it when he was 2 weeks old. It started off looking a bit like that.

I don't know what it is, the GP saw it when he was young and said it wasn't suspicious and that it was safe to stay there and that was that, it's never leaked fluid or anything before or gone redder or bigger. I'll try and get an appointment tomorrow although the way he's wailing I wonder I ooh can do anything to help.

I've got a cyst under my arm that's been there for years and years gradually got bigger as times gone on and the dr said the same thing, it's totally safe, not suspect in any way and of it ever causes bother they can remove it in day surgery.

Might be worth asking about it, branchial cleft cysts make up a fairly large number of congenital neck lumps. Not sure it's on the right place for one but it's odd that he's had it since birth. Poor lad if it's sore tho and he's not a sporner!!

I would pay him to let me squeeze it take him to the doctor.

Take him to GP, and DON'T squeeze - this type of cyst can track very deep and may need careful excision.

Do you think OOH Dr's could actually do anything? He's miserable and in pain here. Calpol isn't helping, I applied a warm flannel and it did nothing. Getting a go appointment the day after bank holiday will be near on impossible.

How old is he?

He's 9.

Sorry for the weird question! I thought he had a beard growing from your picture and was imagining you giving a hulking 17 year old calpol and it not having much effect
I would try and get him into the doctor tomorrow. I don't think it's urgent enough for OOH. Have you got a large dressing you can stick on it to avoid the weeping getting everywhere?

Ha! Yes he does have a tiny beard, also there from birth, he's a hairy child, he looked like a tiny monkey when he was born. I'll get on the phone at 8.30 on the dot for an appointment.

Obvs that was my official advice. Unofficially, chloroform him and squeeze the bejeezus out of it!

I did poke it, it's very, very mobile and about the size of a small sprout.
He yelps if I aim much as look at it though.
I think it's infected he's generally rubbish for a week, just tired and achey and meh.
I shall battle the masses at the GP tomorrow and see what they say.

I disagree I'd take him too out of hours. I was in a lot of pain with a fever that wouldn't break. Sounds like he's the same poor bairn.

Has he got a temperature? If so definitely OOH, otherwise emergency appointment tomorrow morning. I think he needs to be seen fairly soon.

He's gone to bed with ibuprofen, he's not got a temp after the painkiller so I'll leave him asleep for now. Thanks for the advice.

Just keep an eye on it too. My ds's branchial cleft cyst went from looking like the cyst your son has to very inflamed and much bigger in a matter of a couple of hours. The gp sent us to a and e and he was operated on that night. My ds was very little though, only 2 weeks old. Just keep an eye incase it changes. Hope he feels better soon.

Ah I didn't realise he had a fever. I probably would do OOH in that case :/

I called this morning and asked to see a dr and explained the issue, when we got there we'd been booked in with a nurse who took one look and called for a dr but they were too busy to examine him so left a script for penicillin and told the nurse to dress it now and again on Friday.

She looked at his records and it was first noted when he was 1 and was described as 1 cm long, thin and 'like a grain of rice' it was measured today as 4 cm and round and bulging. I get the feeling the nurse wanted a dr to call it on draining it or doing something else but they are busy after the bank holiday. So he's on antibiotics and it will be redressed on Friday. DS is not liking the huge dressing under his neck.

Your poor ds. Hopefully the antibiotics shift the temperature and he feels better soon.

Aaah poor thing. I'm quite shocked the doctor wasn't able to come and look at it - especially given he's a child. Hope he feels better soon.
