A few weeks ago, we asked Mumsnetters whether some families had cracked laundry while the rest of us were making life unnecessarily difficult for ourselves.

More than 100 replies later, we learned that some of you are impressively organised while others just shove everything in the machine and hope for the best. The thread also produced plenty of questions. What actually works on stubborn stains? Why does a sports kit still smell like a wet dog after washing? Are very long wash cycles genuinely necessary? And why the washing machine has been saying “10 minutes remaining” for the past half-hour. (Yes, why do they lie?)

So we've invited an actual laundry expert to answer your questions.

Helen Lyon is Global R&D Lead for Laundry Capsules at Unilever and, in partnership with *Persil Ultimate Non-Bio Capsules, she'll be answering your questions about stains, fabrics, detergents, washing machines and the everyday realities of family laundry.

Thanks for this, I have a couple of questions:

What's the best way to deal with yellow stains on white shirts from deodorant and sun cream? ( particularly stains on polyester gym wear)

What are your thoughts on powder vs liquids, and putting powder in the tray vs in the drum ? I use powder as I have been told it's better for the machine.

Thank you

Does fabric conditioner make wet clothes dry more quickly?

Hi there, Helen, I have two questions if that's okay. Is fabric conditioner actually bad for clothes? How do I get nail polish off a cotton top? I removed as much as I could but it's still staining. Unhelpfully it's pink and the top is white.

Thank you :)

Has the formula changed on Persil liquid (specifically the colour one)? I used it reliably for years but lately it smells strange and doesn't seem to fully rinse out of clothes. And if I add a fabric softener it smells even worse, when it used to be fine.

beigetriangle · 03/08/2026 15:05

why do we see more liquid/pods in stores?
are they really as good as powder or is it a purely economical decision.

my main question however is about washable hygiene products like menstrual pads/pants and make up pads: how best to wash those hygienically and without wasting water?

(also here for the sunscreen question)

parkintrouble · 03/08/2026 15:57

I stupidly bought a t shirt that is white but with a very bright pattern on it. What's the best way to wash it to keep it looking nice?

I washed some black trousers - they came out with white streaks down them. What could have caused them and how can I get rid of them?
Thanks.

Is a 60 minute wash cycle good enough for keeping clothes clean or is a longer cycle better? I never know what setting is best

UsernameHoarder · 03/08/2026 16:58

I only use non bio powder. Persil is my least favourite (sorry). But, powder isnt great for black clothes.

What persil product would you recommend to keep my black clothes black?

Thanks!

The lovely scent!
I'm happy to pay extra just to smell it. It takes me back to my childhood.

How to get rid of chocolate or grass stains off 100% cotton clothing? I’ve found my persil isn’t working…

itsjustasecrethandshake · 04/08/2026 22:04

Longtime user of Persil. I like the powder for cleaning power but find the liquid better to prevent residue on black washes. I’m another struggling with yellow suncream stains on white clothes, even after a pre-soak in stain remover. Any tips much appreciated!
Also I have wondered what is the environmental impact of pods and gel capsules vs traditional loose powder/liquid?
thank you
