Increased travel costs and ongoing uncertainty are prompting many families to rethink their holiday plans this year. With no fuel surcharges, reliable sailings and ABTA-protected holiday packages available, ferry travel could be a smart and stress-free option for a summer getaway.

That’s why we’ve invited Brittany Ferries’ travel expert Jane Elgar to answer your questions about family ferry holidays. Whether you’re looking for destination inspiration, tips for travelling with children or advice on making the journey easier, Jane is here to help.

About Jane
Jane is a ferry travel specialist at Brittany Ferries, with a strong background in customer engagement and family travel. As a mum herself, she loves holidaying in France and Spain and understands the practical realities of planning family trips. With extensive experience helping families travel by ferry, Jane has a strong understanding of common questions around routes, onboard facilities and travelling with children. She’s passionate about helping families feel confident and well prepared, so their holiday can begin the moment they step on board.

Everyone who posts a question on this thread by 14 July will be entered into a prize draw to win a £750 Brittany Ferries sailing travel voucher (T&Cs)

Are there facilities for people with mobility problems on Brittany Ferries?

purpleicedbun · 15/06/2026 10:51

What are your top tips for keeping children entertained and happy onboard?

Ineffable23 · 15/06/2026 10:53

What sort of entertainment do you offer on your multi-day sailings?

sharond101 · 15/06/2026 19:16

Is there food available?

maidai78 · 15/06/2026 19:17

Is it possible to preorder food and drinks

Kentishbirdlife · 15/06/2026 19:20

Is ferry travel more sustainable than flying or travelling by train?

MyM8Marmite · 15/06/2026 19:25

Can you choose to have your car inside the ferry, rather than open to the elements on the top at all? We'd love to travel by ferry again but are reluctant to expose our car to sea spray.

completelyfedupagain · 15/06/2026 19:29

What advice do you have for those travelling from the north of England? We’ll already be doing lots of driving before getting on the ferry so would want a chance to relax on board and then have a destination that’s not too far from the ferry port on the other side.

prettypeace · 15/06/2026 21:30

Does Brittany Ferries have any gluten free food in the cafe?

Fumnudge · 15/06/2026 22:48

This couldn't be more fortunate timing!
We are booking our ferry very shortly (taking our car) and have a person with limited mobility (age related) but is not classed as disabled. What can we expect? Lots of stairs? Is there a lift option as they cannot climb more than say 20 stairs?
Also, if we arrive too late or early, how easy is it to get on an earlier or later ferry?

SomeInternetUser · 15/06/2026 22:54

would love to try a Spanish trip. What wildlife might we see on the trip?

Katisha · 15/06/2026 22:59

Yes I’d also like to ask what to do if for some reason you miss your booked time slot? I realise you can pay more for guaranteed flexibility but if you are trying to keep costs down and book a specific sailing, but get held up, what would happen?

KweenCnut · 15/06/2026 23:10

Can I buy sea sickness medication on board?

lapuf · 15/06/2026 23:10

We didn’t book our usual Brittany trip this summer as missed out on a cabin for the sailing we wanted! How far in advance do they sell out? I was looking at 2027 earlier Halo

JacCharlton · 16/06/2026 12:08

Which destinations in France or Spain would you recommend for families looking for good value this summer, away from the busiest tourist hotspots?

girlwhowearsglasses · 16/06/2026 12:19

Just about to book for in a couple of weeks, could you tell me how early I need to arrive for an 8am from Portsmouth-Caen? and also do you have any recommended hotels to stay at near the ferry port if we need to stay the night before (can't decide whether to do the 2.5 hour trip the night before or not)

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 16/06/2026 12:22

How far in advance can you book? Thank you.

Reab8 · 16/06/2026 12:26

Hi we are looking at taking our touring caravan to France next year and would love to go over on the ferry. Which route would you recommend for our first time to get to a nice easy reach resort? And any other tips?

1dayatatime · 16/06/2026 12:58

Is there any outside entertainment for children. I know that they can stay inside watching a film or be on tech but this makes them feel sea sick. So some kind of entertainment outside would be fantastic.

joyfulohjoy · 16/06/2026 13:00

Are Brittany Ferries coeliac friendly? After a recent diagnosis, this seems to be one of the most challenging things about travelling.

pbandoj · 16/06/2026 16:04

If I leave my dog in our camper van is it possible to go down and get the dog out and give it a walk in the dog area?

Cherry321 · 16/06/2026 18:36

A couple of suggested routes / itineraries would be helpful.

Kastani · 16/06/2026 19:05

Are dogs allowed in cabins?

Ferious · 16/06/2026 19:28

It appeals to me as I can bring my own car. However, I'm worrie about kids and seasickness... also them being bored! Any advice welcome!

WimbleOfWombledon · 16/06/2026 19:41

2 of our family suffer from motion sickness so we’ve never dated try the ferry. What tips do you have for preventing it?

and linked to that - how much outside space is there and are there seats outside? I always feel better if I am in the fresh air and can see the horizon!
