Designing and purchasing for a new baby’s nursery can be a daunting experience. Do you have questions about how to create the ideal, babyproof nursery? Maybe you’d like to know more about the colours which work best for babies, or which furniture would be best for your space? Perhaps you’d like an idea of what you should be aware of safety-wise?

Leave any questions you have for John Lewis nursery expert Deborah Glen.

Here’s what Deborah Glen, John Lewis nursery expert has to say: ''I have worked at JL for over 6 years but have 22 years’ experience working within the nursery industry, I am now the selling coach for Stratford and enjoy helping customers with their nursery needs. I am also a grandmother to two boys, so use my own knowledge and usage of the products when assisting customers. Lots of customers come back to introduce me to their newborns. It's nice to see the new additions to the JL families!"

Post your questions to Deborah below by 4th July 2016 and we will send over 20 questions for her to respond to. We will then post a link to her responses on the thread ASAP.

Everyone who submits a question (regardless of whether it’s answered or not) will be entered into a prize draw to win an Uppababy Vista pushchair.

Thanks, and good luck!

Wha is he best internal storage solution for baby's clothes and things t fit inside and existing over bed built in wardrobe?

My 7 month old is very big for his age (over 9 kgs now) and very very wriggly. My mother is going to be doing a lot of childcare for us in a few months and I'm worried about how she will cope with lifting him onto the change table and keeping him there while she changes nappies. Do you have any advice please? Are there other options for changing that don't require lifting baby so high, and comfortable for the carer's back?

Hi! Hope all is well,

  1. Why are all nurseries specific colour palates? What is the science behind it?
  2. I want to maximise storage space (as I live in central london) for the baby room, what are clever ways to create a nursery that can also work as a storage room for me?

To save costs, we want to furnish using mainly second hand furniture. Do you have any advice on what to look out for when shopping for second hand nursery furniture? Are there any safety precautions we need to watch out for? Is there anything you would suggest buying brand new regardless?

Thanks

Laura

I've heard that cot bumpers shouldn't be used anymore as they are dangerous - is there an alternative, safe solution? I imagine my baby will be sticking her arms and legs through the bars!

I am expecting my first baby in December. I have a small dog and cat and currently live in a flat and therefore the animals have access to all of the rooms.

I was wondering if you had any advice with regards to ensuring that the nursery and baby remains safe and secure. For example is their any protective covers available or would you advise it's best to put some form of lock on the door to keep animals out of the room?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd like any tips about organising baby clothes - hanging or wardrobes or in drawers. What's best to save space and keep things to hand.

annieno1 · 30/06/2016 13:49

What is good paint colours to paint a nursery with?

Alwaysinahurrynow · 30/06/2016 15:47

New baby's nursery is at the front of our house - are there any easy to fit and remove blackout blinds, which aren't unsightly from the outside rather than replacing our existing blinds? Thanks

WeeWaspie · 30/06/2016 18:15

My baby boy gets overstimulated so easily, even by simple mobile s. How do i create a room that's calming yet not dull.

SweetPeaPods · 01/07/2016 07:57

Our bedrooms are very small but I am keen for our baby and toddler to share. Any space saving tips would be appreciated. Do you recommend keeping toys separate so their bedroom is purely for sleeping and storing clothes?

user1467356505 · 01/07/2016 10:30

Hi! My toddlers bedroom is an awkward shape as it is in the roof and the ceiling is slanted from waist to ceiling. The only full height wall has a huge radiator along it so we have nowhere to put a wardrobe! Any advice for storing clothes neatly would be much appreciated (drawers are good for baby grows and socks but I would love to be able to hang his shirts so it's easier to select one and for it to not be creased!) Thanks

AveEldon · 01/07/2016 11:12

We won't have a nursery as the baby will be sharing with siblings
Any tips on how to make the room work well for children of different ages?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 01/07/2016 11:23

Are blackout blinds a necessity or can you do without? I've heard people say they couldn't do without theirs though I actually quite like the idea of natural light coming through in the morning... Would they really have an effect on how baby sleeps? Thanks.

MrsFancyFanjango · 01/07/2016 13:06

Our 6 month old will be ready to go into her own room soon, the room is very small and very cold so the cot will have to either go by the window or radiator (that gets very warm!)

What option do you think would be better and why?

becciandbump · 01/07/2016 15:51

So we have two options the little box room for a small cosy nursery or a double bedroom where could spread out a bit and have extra room for toys etc. Hubby is keen to use the box room but I wonder if the bigger room would be nicer to allow room for a nursing chair, changing table, floor space to play. Would you go with cosy or big if u had the choice? We rarely have guests but it is nice to have a guest room maybe as grandparents will want to visit

Havingkittens04 · 01/07/2016 18:45

I love the idea of a nice, colourful mobile hanging above my baby's cot, but didn't get one when I was expecting my DD as I read that they can become a hazard - that they can be used by baby to pull themselves up... I think I was silly, looking back, to not get a mobile out of fear Shock as my DD couldn't stand herself up until around 8 months. I'd like to get one for the DC I am currently pg with, so my question is -

At how many months should you remove a cot mobile, if at all? Is it really a safety hazard?

Thank you x

Hi Lynn. My son is 'dinosaur crazy'! But he is only three. How can. Create a dinosaur themed bedroom for him without it looking like a room for an older boy? Thanks for any advice in advance. Emma.

AbsolutelyIDo · 01/07/2016 23:15

I'm looking for some easy ways to add a bit of character to my daughter's nursery which is a bit of a mismatch of furniture and smaller than I'd like. Is there anything I can do to pull it together a bit without having to buy too much?

wineandcheeseplease · 02/07/2016 08:33

Are pastel colours best for a nursery instead of bright colours?

user1463663415 · 02/07/2016 20:09

I’m a first time parent and really confused about what bedding to use before baby meets the weight limit for sleeping bags. Can you please tell me what you would recommend?

Andbabymakesthree · 02/07/2016 21:31

Tips on how to create a space for baby within existing opposite gender siblings (five years older)bedroom without upsetting them. Sharing wardrobe , drawers etc.

tapismagique · 03/07/2016 12:35

In a very small nursery, is it worth having a changing unit? (someone is offering to give us one). What features would you look for in a changing unit, and are ones with a baby bath attachment for the top safe?

Irishsummer · 03/07/2016 17:59

What's the best way to adjust a built in wardrobe for storing baby clothes?

TallulahBellatrix · 03/07/2016 22:43

What do you recommend for toy storage in a smallish bedroom? Would love to move as many as possible from my living room and encourage DD to use her bedroom more. How best to balance keeping a restful sleeping environment whilst also utilising the space for play? Thankyou!
