This feedback thread is from the Mumsnetters who attended exclusive preview screenings of the new Sony Pictures film – ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ on 8th May.

You view the trailer here.

The Angry Birds Movie Synopsis:
In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we'll finally find out why the birds are so angry. The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We're the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This Is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
If you attended a screening, please answer the questions below:

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

I went with my DH and DS (8) and DD (4).

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

I was very surprised! The script had plenty for both adults and children, visually it looked excellent (I often struggle with 3D, but this was great). It didn't feel like a movie that was just released to follow on from a computer game, it stands as a good film in its own right.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

My DS loved the swimming scene in the lake of wisdom (I won't spoil it!), he liked the character Bomb.
DD liked Matilda "because she has pink powerful pops", especially when they launch her.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
As a childrens film I would give it 4 out of 5. My DC's both gave it 5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
The screening was real treat, no queues, fantastic cinema with great seats. The goodie bags were a lovely touch. Getting to meet the characters was a highlight for my DS (my DD was too scared).

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?

Yes I would recommend it. The film had enough for all age groups, under 8s would enjoy it as a cartoon, tweenagers would get some of the more adult jokes, the soundtrack had some nice touches for adults and the cast (especially Peter Dinklage as the Great Eagle) was a surprise. Anyone who had played the game would enjoy how the ideas have been translated to the screen.

I went Manchester screening with my DS10. As mentioned already, there was a technical problem with the projector and in the end we were given tickets to come back another day and went to watch Zootropolis instead (which was great by the way!). The staff at Manchester were great, kept us informed and brought out extra water. My son was a little bit disappointed as he was looking forward to seeing the film before any one else, but we had a lovely morning anyway, so thank you.

AtSea1979 · 08/05/2016 17:25

Went with DS 10 and DD 7.
We were at Manchester so watched Jungle Book instead. We had a lovely time though. DC loved the bag and popcorn. Looking forward to using the tickets for IMAX (Alice). Will watch Angry Birds on Friday at my local cinema.
Thank you so much for a lovely day anyway!

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
My husband, daughter age 9 and son age 7

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
The birds don't like it when Red gets angry and send him for anger management. Red lives on the outskirts of town by the beach and is a bit of an outcast, things go even more wrong for Red when the bad piggies arrive! I loved the film and so did the kids, husband thought it was not as good as he thought it would be. Even though I loved the film, I was unsure about some of the jokes; firstly at the beginning red gets annoyed at the fact that the cake he had to deliver was gluten free- if my child had celiac disease I think this could have made them feel they were having the mickey taken and as a parent I would have been upset. So he could have been angry for any number of other more funny reasons. Secondly I noticed a reference to the word Kosher- not sure if this was meant to be a joke or not..... So some of the jokes /sketches could have been better, I think they were trying to cater for the adult audiences; but the few references made were not really working- such as that of the shinings grady twins. Sometimes the adult jokes really make a film for the family, but I did not think it worked well how they were worked into this one. I guess otherwise, generally it all fits with the game concept and the kids related well to it all. The colours were bright and the world the birds live in seemed immersive and fun. Bad piggie king was given a bad voice, rather like the pink baddy bear in toy story. Not sure if the whole not eating eggs thing might affect very young children and their choice of breakfast!

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
The kids favourite part was when the angry birds used the catapult to fire themselves at the piggies to rescue the eggs. The kids really liked Speedy Chuck

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it? Me and hubby give it a 4, kids gave it a 5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
It was a memorable day. Not wanting to be picky, but feel I should mention that the music playing while we waited was far too loud , the film was also loud but not so unbearable! The 3D was really fun, the seats were very comfortable and the goody bags were great; my son loves peperami's and my daughter loves popcorn-perfect. The picturehouse was clean and luxurious compared to other venues. The kids liked having their pictures taken with the characters; it was a really great morning.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?
I would recommend the film as I really enjoyed it and the kids loved it and stayed glued to it without fidgeting at all. They had grins on their faces the whole time.
Thank you for a wonderful morning.

We attended the Manchester screening, and I just wanted to praise the staff.

We were at the Hotel Transylvania showing last year, and the difference was remarkable. The water was in the cup holders waiting, as were the goody bags. And we were handed popcorn on our way in, both children and adults.

Even though there was a delay, the atmosphere was much nicer, probably because we were being treated well. We were informed a couple of times that they were trying to deal with the delay, and then told that there was a fault.

We watched Captain America instead (DH was thrilled) and were given free tickets for next time.

Well done Odeon, your staff got it just right this time (and we'll be back soon to watch Angry Birds!)

Also, what shall we do with the survey? As we can't really fill it out accurately.

sfancy · 08/05/2016 18:20

To start, my sons ages 5,5, and 8 were so excited to see the movie that they were up at 5am this morning!

The film was brilliant! It was great for kids and there were parts that made me laugh out loud. My boys are quite angry birds mad so it was very interesting to see how the ' anger' started in the birds. I thought it was a feel good movie and I have already been asked if I can take the kids to see it again!

Our favourite character was Terrance, and the scenes that he was on, especially when he broke the slingshot and punched Red in the face ( that's boys for your! Even though he appeared to be a big scary bully-he ended up being a softie in the end.

I would give the film a 4/5, my children would give it a 5/5.

I thought the screening was a wonderful experience. We were welcomed by the angry birds characters and then had a lovely goody bag with Pepperami, Popcorn face masks and water which was very gratefully received. The mumsnet staff were very friendly as well- ( Thanks!!)

I would easily recommend this film to people who are familiar with the angry birds concept and those who are not-it can be enjoyed by all and is highly amusing.

Thank you for a lovely morning!

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
Me, DP and my 2 youngest children ages 8 and 6

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
Absolutely loved it. We went because my youngest DS has ASD and is obsessed with Angry Birds but me and DP really enjoyed it too. Lots of hidden adult humour. I was a little bit lost at the beginning of the film but soon caught up with what the gist was. Reminded me a little of the Wizard of Oz in parts.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DS liked the part at the beginning of the film involving the cake. DD loved the part about the Lake of Wisdom - plenty of belly laughs!

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it a 4 and the DC would give it 5

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
Lovely cinema, comfy seats - nice to see seat raisers and blankets available for children. Really loved the goody bags, think we have 40 mini peperami's to munch our way through at home. Staff so friendly and helpful.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?
Yes I would recommend it, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny and enjoyable it was. I'm sure my 17yr old would have enjoyed it too if he could have scraped himself out of bed on a weekend.

Thanks Mumsnet - we had a great time! Well worth the 5am wake up and 3hr drive from Somerset!!

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
I attended with my husband and my two DS's. DS1 is 7 and DS2 is 4

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
I thought it was great. I was a little sceptical about the transition from game to movie, but it was sooo much better than I thought! The film was fun, had great lines and really brought the familiar characters to the big screen really well.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DS1's favourite character was Red. DS2's favourite character was Chuck. The favourite part of the movie for me was the therapy sessions (not sure if that is saying something about me!) but it was the 'realism' captured in those scenes, with the lines, the scepticism, guilt, shyness etc - emulated some of the great scenes from other movies/small screen comedies.
DS1's favourite bit was when the birds saved the eggs. The slingshot bit in particular.
DS2's favourite part was when they had climbed the mountain to find the Eagle and were swimming and drinking in the water only to find out that's where the Eagle went to the toilet!! (have to agree...that was funny, didn't expect that!)

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
As it surpassed my expectations, I gave it a 5
My husband gave it 4
My DS1 gave it 5
My DS2 gave it 5

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
The screening was really good. Lovely goody bag. Although we did all smell of pepperami a bit!
The cinema was really comfortable.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?
I would recommend this film (I already have, been raving about it all day!). It is a great family film, with great lines, good wit, and good story.
It really brought the familiar characters to life. Made me want to play the game again as I had stopped playing it for a while. I want to see how good I am at the game now and see the game versions of Red, Bomb and Chuck!

FishTailPlait · 08/05/2016 20:47

We were at Manchester & like the others we felt desperately sorry for the staff & the stressed out man on the radio! Their customer service was great and we couldn't fault them. We had traveled from the East Midlands so had had an early start but as a pp has said the crowd were most civilised about it all & dc's seemed to take it in their stride. DS was the most disappointed out of us all but seeing Captain America did partly make up for it and we do have our vouchers to see it another time. Sounds like we missed a good movie from the London reviews.

hanliying · 08/05/2016 21:05

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC 5 and 3 years old

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?5/5, big thumb up
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening? great experience. Venue very easy to find and the 3D movie's amazing. Kids love the masks from the goody bad

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
I attended with my DDs aged 3 and 5 years old.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A fantastically silly, funny and enjoyable film with plenty of laughs for both kids and adults. It’s not just for hardened Angry Bird fans either…although you may become one after watching this! It really exceeded my expectations!

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
They had so many! When they discover Matilda can shoot fire balls out of her bottom, when Bomb explodes, any scene with Terrence in, every time Red loses his temper, When Chuck and Bomb imagine what Mighty Eagle will look like, When they are trying to guess what Mighty Eagles Battle Cry might sound like, When they discover the hoard of hidden piggys aboard the visiting ship (thanks to a trampolining Bomb!),THAT scene at the Lake of Wisdom, The mission to Piggy Island, I could go on!
Red was a firm favourite with all of us! My 3 year old also particularly liked Matilda, Bomb and Terrence and My 5 year old also really liked Chuck, Bomb and the ‘OMG’ Mime Bird!

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

I attended with DH and DDs aged 11 and 4 and DS aged 7

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
Okay, I shall be honest here - I went in with my expectations being not so high simply because I couldn't see how they could turn a game into a film. I was so wrong. The film was well made and had something for everyone. I loved the humour as well as some real life scenarios like anger management, losing a child and learning to care for other people, living on past glory (eagle).
The animation was great too as well as the songs that were woven in.
I love how the little things show that a person is not instrinsically angry or bad - it's the circumstances that make him like that.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

DD1 (11) liked the film in it's entirety, DS (7) was in splits of (loud)laughter throughout but he liked the fact the the eagle took a wee in the lake, DD1(4) loved the little chicks.
Favourite character - DD1 - Red, DD2 - Red, DS - Bomb

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it a 5 and so would my DC.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
The London Picturehouse was lush, lean back seats and blankets to put on the child boosters. We loved the Pepperami goody bags and the kids loved the little masks. We have a few angry birds at home every now and then.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?
Yes - Go See It - Take the whole family - would be my advice. It's funny and has just the right amount of adult humour for grown ups to enjoy too.

We attended the Manchester showing, but unfortunately due to technical difficulties we were unable to watch Angry Birds.
However, I just wanted to say how fantastic the staff were, very apologetic, great with the kids and done there upmost to ensure everyone was ok, we were very impressed and will definitely be returning to The Odeon at the Trafford Centre.
We will hopefully be using our vouchers over the next week to watch Angry Birds Smile xx

DD3 (7) and two of her friends, B & G, both 7 too.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

Great family film. I surprised myself by actually enjoying it all... Hidden adult humour, fun soundtrack, and a gentle moral running through it.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

All three loved the part where the eggs were saved, and the Lake of Wisdom bit had them properly laughing... Favourite characters were the stars - Bomb, Red and Chuck.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

We'd all give it 5/5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

Great morning, thank you so much. Picturehouse Central is my favourite place to watch films. The goody bags waiting for us were great too, and DD and her chums did a full on show and tell at school today with the masks!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?

Absolutely. Good fun, appeals to children and adults alike. I expect it's highly likely we'll go back and see it again.

Thank you so much. We all had a great time.

Went to Manchester screening with 3 excited kids but unfortunately due to technical issues we were unable to watch Angry Bird. However, as a goodwill gesture odeon gave everyone who attended the screening free tickets to come back at anytime at any odeon cinema and also had the chance to go and watch any film which were on at the time, and we chose Zootropolis and what amazing film we laughed all the way through. Thanks for the popcorn and goody bag. xx

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

I went with my five year old daughter and seven year old son

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

Very funny animated film answering all the questions you never knew you had about the angry birds game

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

My daughter liked Red and my son liked the anger management teacher. They both like a happy ending!

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

We'd all give it five stars. I loved the music and there were enough jokes to keep adults amused

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

We had a fantastic time. The cinema was great, we loved the goody bags and the film was very funny and entertaining.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?

Definitely. It managed to keep all three of us engaged. My 5 year old got a bit upset at one point but it's suitable for young kids, she's scared of everything! There's enough to keep adults and older kids interested too.

M22kids · 09/05/2016 21:01

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

My husband and I took our two children (son 8yrs old and daughter 6yrs old).

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

Lead bird, Red, grows up miserable and misunderstood and angry. With his regular fits of anger, he doesn't seem to fit in and is instead sent to anger management classes. When the pigs arrive on the island, Red is the only one who is suspicious of their motives.

It was fun (surprisingly for us grown ups too!) and we all loved it.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

They loved it when the birds attacked the pigs' island.

Both of them loved Red the best, with speedy Chuck coming a close second. I rather liked the mean and moody Terence.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

I'd give it 4/5, the children 5/5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

It was well organised; didn't feel hectic, stressful or crowded at any point (we attended the London screening).

The children were really excited to see the birds at the screening and wouldn't stop talking to them.

The staff were all helpful and friendly.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend ‘The Angry Birds Movie!’ to friend and family? Why?

Yes, definitely! It was very enjoyable for all of us, with no scary moments for the children. We all had a laugh at the different characters.
