This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who attended exclusive screenings for Hotel Transylvania 2 in London and Manchester on 4th October.

You can read more about the film here.

Hotel Transylvania 2 Synopsis:
Drac's pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania...
Dracula's rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn't showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny - and in for a major cultural shock of her own - 'Vampa' Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a "monster-in-training" boot camp. But little do they know that Drac's grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood - and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania - things are going to get batty!

  1. Me, DH, DD17, DD15, and DD10.
  2. Funny in parts but not enough to make you laugh out loud. Entertaining storyline. My youngest daughter really enjoyed the film and found it very funny but my eldest daughter did not enjoy it as much. I don't think it's worth spending extra on a 3D film as the film was more like HD instead of 3D. 3). Mavis was my youngest daughter's favourite character. No particular favourite part.
  3. I would rate it 4 star.
  4. A nice and clean cinema with comfy seats and a good view. We enjoyed the film and had a lovely time. The free bags of popcorn and bottles of water were a nice bonus but the popcorn was a bit stale and not sweet.
  5. I would recommend the film.

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC. I didn't get to go in the end Sad. DH took DD1 (13) and DD2 (10)

All comments below are made by DD2

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

It was a bit of a comedy. It was quite poor until Bobby (she's not 100% sure of name) turned into a vampire. And after that it was good.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

When the Grandpa vampire said "talking toilet paper, that's a new one!". The Mummy was my favourite character (in other words the Talking toilet paper!)

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it? DD10 would give it 3.5 stars out of 10. DH would only give it 2 stars he found the plot really flimsy (but good last 10 minutes)

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

it was a really nice comfy cinema and very good popcorn

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

I would recommend it to my friends as they're not as serious as me. They would probably find it really funny and crack up laughing and not be able to stop!

ottothedog · 07/10/2015 16:22

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

Me and my daughter, aged 8

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it and found it quite funny and easy to watch, and my daughter loved ever minute of it.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

The part where the dad tries to prove his son can fly by dropping him from a great height. The jelly character was both our favourites, especially when you could see the things he had 'swallowed', like a squirrel

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

I would give it 4/5, it's not as good as classics like 'Up' but still good. My daughter rates it 5/5

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

Oh this was really bad :( We were also in Manchester and I felt like we were earning our freebie. The lady working there was so nice and so helpful but there was just her and we spent an hour waiting with no 'surprises' and no goody bag on the seats and adverts and no 3D. We were lucky to see the film at all as we were directed to a completely different screen.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

Yes, already recommended it. Funny, not at all scary, but 'halloweeny'

HT2namechange · 07/10/2015 17:12

Right, I spent ages trying to do this a couple of days ago & the whole thing crashed, so I will try again...

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

DH and DS, 6 years old.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

It's a good film, especially for Halloween. It isn't as good as the original, but it still had something for everyone, with some jokes aimed at the adults as well.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

Mavis is DS's favourite character, as he thinks she's clever and brave, and a good mummy.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

I would give it 3.5, because it isn't as good as the first film which is more like a 4. DS gives it a 4.5 (the highest he ever gives anything, because there's always room for improvement!)

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

As others have said, the Trafford Centre screening was a bit of a shambles - I don't have much to add to that, but agree with what everyone has said. I will reiterate, though, that the staff were very helpful and friendly despite the chaos they must have been experiencing!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

I would, particularly at this time of year. It is a family film which really is aimed at all of the family, and not just mind-numbing silliness like a lot of children's films!

HT2namechange · 07/10/2015 17:47

Every time I try to add photos it crashes, so let's try with a smaller message!

Thanks for the free viewing.....

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

DH and DDs, 9 & 13 years old.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

Not as good as the original, which DD9 loves and watches all the time, but still really fun and enjoyable.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

DD 9 loved Dennis, and Dracula is her most favourite. DD 13 did not have much to comment!

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

DD 9 gave it a 5, DD 13 said it was OK!
I would give it a 4, it's certainly fun for the kids.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

We went to Westfield. Got there just after 10am... not much queue as most people were already in there. Found 4 seats together at the back. Each seat had a character mask, bag of popcorn and bottle of water which was nice. There were people dressed as the characters and some photographers. Just before the movie we all had to hold the masks over our faces and wave to the camera. Film started promptly at 10.30 and there were no adverts or trailers. After movie, kids were having their photos taken with the characters.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

I would recommend for families to go and see, it was a fun film and perfect for Halloween time.

HavingAnOffDAy · 09/10/2015 10:50

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with ? including the ages of your DC
Myself DD8 & DS4
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A fun family film, predictable but funny.
Q3. What was your DC?s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DD liked the zombies.
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I'd give it 3, DC gave it 5
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
The screening (Manchester) was disorganised - as per comments made my other attendees. Didn't spoil it for DC though
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes, although probably as a home rental rather than as a film to make a special trip to see. I thought the film was funny in parts, a nice realxing watch, but not massively entertaining

mummyeme · 09/10/2015 20:40

Dd and I went to see the film, she's 11

We both really enjoyed it, I'd give it 5/5 as would my daughter. There were some great laugh out loud moments where the cinema filled with giggles (from all ages).

I'd really recommend it, especially for a family outing. We both thought it was engaging (pacey enough) and really funny with a great story line for younger kids to follow.

Thankyou mumsnet!

MalloryValerie · 09/10/2015 22:29

Q1. Attended with DD and DS both aged 5
Q2. Good family film, continued nicely on from the first film (which handily we had watched the day before!) and evolved the story well. Great range of characters.
Q3. Their favourite character was Dennis and both of them liked the learning to fly part and where he got his fangs at the end. They have been improvising fangs out of the various items of food ever since.
Q4. DCs gave it 5 out of 5, I would give it 3.5.
Q5. Like others we had issues with slow running trains getting to Westfield and ended up running through the shopping centre at breakneck speed. When we got to the desk we were told it was full - cue panic from kids (and me!) but the lovely lady from Vue immediately said that we could have tickets for the 11am screening. Even better we then saw all the characters coming out from the 10.30 screening and got a lovely picture with Mavis. The cinema was really empty and we could choose VIP seats. Only downside was no 3D which the kids were disappointed with but I thought was better as they have got fed up with the glasses in past.
Q6. I would recommend it for kids aged 5 and up. Kids are already asking when Hotel Transylvania 3 is going to be out.

Lent1l · 10/10/2015 11:28

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
I attended with my husband and 3.5 year old.
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
The film was a good follow up to the first film. It wasn't as good but sequels seldom are. However still enjoyable.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
My daughter loved the "jellyman" and particularly when went the wrong way and went over the cliff.
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
Husband and I gave it a 3 as we felt the start rushed through the beginning of the baby's life and the story overall was a little strained. Daughter said it was as good as frozen which is her favourite film!
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
As others at the Trafford Centre the experience was poor. We didn't turn up too early as this was her first cinema trip and we didn't want her sitting there too long but as there was entertainment and no trailers promised we were hopeful. We were let down in both respects. The trailers went on forever and led to her getting quite fidgety.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
If friends have seen the first movie this is a good sequel. It had some laugh out loud moments and we have a new "blah blah blah" phrase in the house!

battlefelton · 10/10/2015 18:22

I attended the movie with my oldest (20) and my youngest (10) in Manchester.

Overall summary: Though there was no human diversity, Hotel Transylvania 2 is a delightful movie about identity, acceptance and the strength that comes from having loving, supporting family and friends.

My son's favorite part of the film was when Drac throws his grandson from the tower expecting him to fly. His favorite character is Blobby.

I would give the film 4 out of 5 stars. My DC would give it 4 stars.

Most of the Odean staff was friendly and helpful. We stood in line and then the cashier told us we didn't have to stay in line but to walk on in. We must have arrived after the fanfare. The person who took the tickets snatched the paper, ripped it in half and tilted his head back to direct us to the movie. We pretended he was in character...The inside staff was friendly and gave popcorn was a treat that we didn't expect. When we signed up it said there would be no trailers so it was really important to arrive on time. There were about 30 minutes of trailers and commercials. At the end of the movie they gave out treats and the staff was friendly. Overall, it was a good experience.

If it came up in conversation I would definitely recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to family and friends. It was a touching movie about the ways families identify and individuals yearn for acceptance in a diverse world without feeling like the movie was teaching you something. We need more of those.

Godlessdomestic · 10/10/2015 21:52

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC. I went with DH, DD aged 8 and her 8 YO friend.
Q2. Your overall summary of the film - it was funny, not as good as the original but certainly some laugh out loud moments.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character? Both girls liked Dennis, DD's favourite part was when they were dropping Dennis off the tower, friends was the were-pack's party.
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it? I would give it 4/5, both girls 5/5
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening? We arrived at Westfield at 9:45 as we were warned to turn up early. Was a little bit disappointed that there was no real activities before to keep the smalls amused - we came to the Cloudy preview a couple of years ago and were expecting something similar. Having said that, the girls loved seeing the characters and having their pics taken with them. They were really excited to be asked to do the vox-pop afterwards too.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why? Yes I would, it's a fun family film which has some lovely moments.

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC.

I went with DD3, who's 7

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

A great sequel to the first film, picking up from that perfectly. It was fairly predictable for me (obviously!), but DD was glued to it..

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

When Dennis jumped off the rickety flight tower. She also loved the part when Mavis was having him.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

We'd both give it 5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

A great morning, thank you. Seeing the 3D version was ace, and we loved
that. DD loved seeing the larger than life characters and having her picture taken with them. Masks, popcorn and water an added bonus, not least to save a remortgage to buy them..

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

Yep, absolutely and DD and I already have, in fact we're off back to Westfield again tomorrow to see it as a birthday treat with a couple of her friends - at her request I hasten to add, though I don't actually mind seeing it again. Why? Well it's a good children's film. Would recommend 3D over normal, as it enhanced it for sure.

Thank you for the tickets, we had a fun day. though bank manager may wince at my post film shopping

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
My friend and I and our two children : 7 and 7

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
It was fang-tastic! The animation, characters, jokes were all brilliant and even better than the first one.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DD loved Drac. Favourite part - Denisovich's birthday party

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
We'd both give it 5 stars

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
We arrived a bit earlier thinking there would be something organised for the kids but there wasn't. We were told by a member of staff on arrival to queue up to find out where to go. Luckily, half way one of the mums figured out that the screening was around the corner.
There was a bottle of water, mask and popcorn waiting on each seat. We were made to pose for the cameras with our masks on for a while [big grin]. There were mascots too!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Most definitely! It is a great family outing.

Zampa · 12/10/2015 16:49

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
DSS (age 7) and DH.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A scary ride through Transylvania! I'd seen the first film, as had DSS so we were au fait with the characters from the start. DH took a while to warm to warm up to it and was a bit lost at times (probably says more about him, thinking about it ...).

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DSS loves Frank and had to make sure that he got the right mask before we left. He was too excited to have a favourite part but did sing the gruesone nursery rhyme for the rest of the day.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
Adults -3/5
DSS - 5/5

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
I wasn't expecting anything other than the film so wasn't disappointed like others at the Trafford Centre. However, it would have been awesome to have had the characters there! The handing out of 3D glasses for a 2D film was an odd choice!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
I would recommend the film to families with younger children. They desperately want to join in with the scary season but too often can't handle ghosts and ghouls without tears and nightmares (thanks Dr. Who!). This film is a nice gentle scary treat for the whole family.

Beachday · 14/10/2015 12:27

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
My son age 7

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
Great fun, interesting fun characters,
Bit of nonsense!
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film?
drac singing the lullaby, he's made me look it up on YouTube to get the words right!
What was their favourite character?
Definitely Drac
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I'd give it 4, my son would give it 5.
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
Don't want to sound ungrateful but it had been built up into something more. There were a few characters to have photos taken with.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes definitely, it's a bit different than the usual kids movies, but not for kids who are squeamish.

iklboo · 14/10/2015 15:46

Unfortunately I couldn't attend. I didn't get the confirmation email until after we'd heard DS had been picked to play in his rugby match. Sorry Sad

BlueBlueBelles · 14/10/2015 18:09

Iklboo, we got our late too so it meant only 3/5 of us could go sadly. DSS was gutted he had to do family stuff instead!

MrsB76 · 16/10/2015 16:36

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
Two daughters aged 6 and 8.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

Dracula becomes a grandfather - but little Dennis doesn't seem to be growing any fangs! Dracula is determined to make a vampire out of his grandson despite his son and daughter-in-law insisting he's fine as he is.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

8yoDD liked the bit with the videophone call where Dracula says co-coo!
6yo DD liked the bit when the little half vampire baby is born and then the final scene.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would say it's a decent 4.
Kids: 5 out of 5.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

It was a very pleasant experience although since we only arrived 5 mins before the start we could not sit together.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

Yes, if they liked the first instalment.
