Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
Me, my partner, our 5yo DS and 3yo DD (and 4mo DS)
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
We all enjoyed it. My 5yo DS especially. I felt the plot was slightly over inflated and that the story could have been told in a 'tighter' way. The animation was gorgeous though and there were a few laugh out loud moments in the film.
There was some jarring product placement in the film. Let's just say we were in no doubt which studio made the film by the constant Xperia and Vaio products in shot. A little strange in a kids' film I thought.
The story line was a little predictable and the message was good although I think I would have preferred a different ending on that basis. It will make the perfect October half-term cinema trip for families.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
My 5yo's favourite part was when Vlad tried to teach Dennis to learn to fly. Dennis and Frank were his favourite characters. It was the first time we've been to the cinema and he has stayed in his seat all the way through the film so a definite result!
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it 3/5. My DS says 10/5 'I didn't like it, I LOVED it'.
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
We attended the Trafford Centre screening and were actually quite disappointed by the overall experience (excluding the film). We have attended two Mumsnet previews previously and loved the fun before the film so were excited to experience this again with a new film.
We arrived an hour before as instructed to in our ticket information and found nothing going on at all. We were told to go and sit down whereupon we sat for an hour with just music and trailer sounds being broadcast while my children got more and more bored. This also meant that, by the time the film actually started my DD needed a wee several times during the screening.
We were given a mask and a bottle of water on arrival in the screen and then popcorn was handed out. The poor woman doing this was very apologetic but was on her own. I did feel sorry for her as her job was made so much harder by the fact that we were all sitting down already. She was handing out sweets at the end of the film as we left too. I must mention the guy who was checking tickets on arrival who gave the impression of not caring in the slightest about what was going on. He was actually quite rude and completely unwelcoming. Not Mumsnet's fault at all, but not the best welcome to a cinema I've ever had! He looked like he'd had a heavy night the night before and had rolled reluctantly into work.
3D glasses were handed out on entry and then the film was broadcast in 2D. My DS wore his all the way through anyway. It sounds like the 3D was an excellent experience at Westfield so a bit of a shame we missed that. Again, a breakdown in communication I assume. We were also shown a reel with 23 minutes of trailers and advertising before the screening when the ticket information said we wouldn't see any. I was quite alarmed to see toy ads in this bundle, kids in the cinema are the very definition of a captive audience and I found that a bit distasteful.
I got the impression that none of the staff knew anything about the actual instructions and that there had been a complete breakdown in communication. We did enjoy the film though.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes, we've already recommended it to a few friends and I know my DS was telling his friends how awesome it was in the playground before school today. It's a very enjoyable film and the perfect companion to the first film, especially at this time of year.
