This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who attended exclusive screenings for Hotel Transylvania 2 in London and Manchester on 4th October.

You can read more about the film here.

Hotel Transylvania 2 Synopsis:
Drac's pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure in Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania 2! Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania...
Dracula's rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn't showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny - and in for a major cultural shock of her own - 'Vampa' Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a "monster-in-training" boot camp. But little do they know that Drac's grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood - and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania - things are going to get batty!

I went along to see this with my daughter who is 11 and son who is 8. It's a fun adventure about Drac's new grandson and whether or not he is human or a vampire and the monster training they go through.
My daughter loved Mavis and my son thought the wolf pack were hilarious. They both liked the vampire training camp and the wolf packs' party. We would all give it 5 stars.
The screening in Westfield was great. Characters milled around and the kids liked the masks. Staff were friendly.
We would all recommend the movie. It's a fun sequel to the first with the same great characters and some great new additions. It has some mild scary parts and would be a great trip out for Halloween. It worked well for my 10 year old daughter as well as my younger son.

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
I attended the Westfield screening with my 2 DS, age 5 and 8
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
In this film Mavis and Johnnie are trying to find out if their son Dennis is vampire or human. He has until his 5th birthday to show his fangs, but he is showing no signs, so they don't know if he's a 'late fanger' or not. So Mavis wants to move to California to let him be human but Johnnie wants to stay as he loves the Hotel. So Vampa Drac sends Mavis and Johnnie of to explore California with strict instructions to Johnnie to make sure Mavis isn't enjoying herself too much, capice.... In the meantime he takes Dennis on a trip to make a monster out of him.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
My 8 yr old loved Blobbie and his favourite part was where the rickety tower in Vamp Camp catches fire and collapses.
My 5 yr old loved Dennis and the best bit for him was that Dennis' first words were 'blah blah blah'.
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give the film 5 stars, my 8 yr old says 4.5 stars and my 5 yr old says 5 stars.
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
We arrived on time but had to queue a bit to get in. The characters were out and that provided some photo opportunities if people wanted. Once we got it, there were masks, water and popcorn on the seats, which was nice. We did struggle to find 3 seats next to each other, as there were a lot of empty seats between families, which were no use really, especially for my 8 yr old with ASD and a slightly scared 5 yr old who cannot sit on their own. It probably would have been a bit better if someone has supervised this and got people to move along the rows. But we did find seats and had a great time. Oh and as an aside, the toilets were nice and clean!
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
I would definitely recommend this film, in fact I already have. It is a funny film with plenty to laugh for kids and adults. It moves along at a good pace and certainly managed to keep my 2 captivated throughout.

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
DP and DS11 and DS9
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
Fun animated film, good for Halloween.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character? Blobby (not sure if that was his name) was both their favourite, they liked when he ended up with stuff inside him.
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it? 3 for me, 4 for them.
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening? A bit disappointing, as described by previous posters. We went to Trafford centre - no fun in the lobby, no snacks on seat as promised, a long wait for the film to start, then there were adverts and trailers, plus it wasn't in 3D which was the biggest disappointment. Staff worked hard to accommodate everyone so thanks to them.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why? Yes, as it was a fun film, the kids enjoyed it.

RedRoseMummy · 05/10/2015 12:16

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
Me, my partner, our 5yo DS and 3yo DD (and 4mo DS)

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
We all enjoyed it. My 5yo DS especially. I felt the plot was slightly over inflated and that the story could have been told in a 'tighter' way. The animation was gorgeous though and there were a few laugh out loud moments in the film.

There was some jarring product placement in the film. Let's just say we were in no doubt which studio made the film by the constant Xperia and Vaio products in shot. A little strange in a kids' film I thought.

The story line was a little predictable and the message was good although I think I would have preferred a different ending on that basis. It will make the perfect October half-term cinema trip for families.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
My 5yo's favourite part was when Vlad tried to teach Dennis to learn to fly. Dennis and Frank were his favourite characters. It was the first time we've been to the cinema and he has stayed in his seat all the way through the film so a definite result!

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it 3/5. My DS says 10/5 'I didn't like it, I LOVED it'.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
We attended the Trafford Centre screening and were actually quite disappointed by the overall experience (excluding the film). We have attended two Mumsnet previews previously and loved the fun before the film so were excited to experience this again with a new film.

We arrived an hour before as instructed to in our ticket information and found nothing going on at all. We were told to go and sit down whereupon we sat for an hour with just music and trailer sounds being broadcast while my children got more and more bored. This also meant that, by the time the film actually started my DD needed a wee several times during the screening.

We were given a mask and a bottle of water on arrival in the screen and then popcorn was handed out. The poor woman doing this was very apologetic but was on her own. I did feel sorry for her as her job was made so much harder by the fact that we were all sitting down already. She was handing out sweets at the end of the film as we left too. I must mention the guy who was checking tickets on arrival who gave the impression of not caring in the slightest about what was going on. He was actually quite rude and completely unwelcoming. Not Mumsnet's fault at all, but not the best welcome to a cinema I've ever had! He looked like he'd had a heavy night the night before and had rolled reluctantly into work.

3D glasses were handed out on entry and then the film was broadcast in 2D. My DS wore his all the way through anyway. It sounds like the 3D was an excellent experience at Westfield so a bit of a shame we missed that. Again, a breakdown in communication I assume. We were also shown a reel with 23 minutes of trailers and advertising before the screening when the ticket information said we wouldn't see any. I was quite alarmed to see toy ads in this bundle, kids in the cinema are the very definition of a captive audience and I found that a bit distasteful.

I got the impression that none of the staff knew anything about the actual instructions and that there had been a complete breakdown in communication. We did enjoy the film though.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes, we've already recommended it to a few friends and I know my DS was telling his friends how awesome it was in the playground before school today. It's a very enjoyable film and the perfect companion to the first film, especially at this time of year.

Q1. Saw the film with DH and DD aged 10 and her friend aged 10.

Q2. A tiny bit slow at the beginning but overall we all loved it and the story had an underlying theme of accepting everyone as they (plus DH didn't fall asleep..so must have been very entertaining!)

Q3. My DD's best bits would be every scene with the green blobby monster & the puppy werewolves running riot at the party!

Q4. I would give it 4/5 but both kids have given it 5/5 and both thought it was even better than Hotel Transylvania!

Q5. It was all very well organised at Vue Westfield with 3 characters - Mavis, The Mummy & Frankenstein there to meet & greet and photo's. Inside the screening everyone had a mask, popcorn & water on their seat.

Q6. I would recommend the film as the girls loved it and were laughing all the way through (might not suit very young kids).

Thanks Mumsnet for the chance to see it!

rennie1811 · 05/10/2015 13:31

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – I attended with my husband and two daughters aged 4 & 8 who loved the first film and were really excited about seeing number 2, we rewatched number 1 the day before just to remind ourselves again.
Q2. Your overall summary of the film - Sequals are rarely as good as the first films so I was pleasantly surprised to not only enjoy this one but also to find myself laughing out loud at some parts. My husband also really enjoyed it and my kids loved it. This second film focuses mainly on Mavis & Johnny's son Dennis and the will he wont he become a Vampire. The madcap adventures throughout the film thanks to Drac and his friends keep the film moving along and before you know it you have come to the end.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? Both my girls loved Baby Dennis. My eldest loved where his fangs dropped and when the video of Dennis appeared online. My youngest loved anything with Dennis in it but especially when he was dancing or just being silly. They both loved Drac's version of the nursery rhymes and were still singing them that way this morning along with saying bleh bleh bleh to everything...
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? I would give it a strong 4 out of 5 stars, my daughters both said 5/5 they are already asking to see it again
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
We attended the Trafford Centre screening and again like the others were very disappointed. Having been lucky enough to attend the Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 screening a couple of years ago we were expecting something similar. We got there for 9 like the tickets said and there was no one anywhere, we waited around for a while before approaching a staff member who told us to just wait where we were and Mumsnet would get there eventually. We waited and then around 9.45 noticed that people were walking in, we assumed the fun must be in the actual cinema so off we went to find a dark cinema with no one there, most people seemed confused and no one really knew what was happening as there were no announcements. I got told by another mum that the mumsnet people were lost and that they would be there soon. It was disappointing to see no goody bags on the seats especially since I had told my kids this is what was happening. A lady then started handing out water & eventually popcorn but being only one lady this took some time and I did see quite a few people miss out. The kids got a mask each which they loved and they loved their popcorn as well. I was a bit surprised to see the adverts and trailers since it had said these wouldn't be shown and also had to explain to my daughters that it wasn't in 3d even though they had been given the glasses ( some people left their glasses on the whole time so probably left thinking that 3d really isn't worth paying the extra for) I would have liked to see better communication - just being told what was happening would have been nice so that you could explain to dissapointed children. I also thought that since my children had effectively been sitting their for two hours doing nothing by the time the film started it showed what a good film it was that they sat there right until the end without complaining once. I also thought that since the beginning fun in the foyer was messed up the characters might have been there at the end but no it seemed that they just gave up.
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Yes and we have already done so. My eldest went running into school this morning telling everyone and pretending to be Drac. I have also spoken to my friends at work and suggested they take their kids to see it. A great fun family film and great for Halloween!

Thanks Mumsnet for giving us the opportunity to see the movie

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

Myself, husband, daughter 10 and son 9.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film

A funny, touching, feel good family film. The sequel to the original Hotel Transylvania and Mavis who's a vampire has married Jonny a human and they have a very cute half vampire half human son called Dennis. The film follows Dennis as he grows at Hotel Transylvania with his doting vampire grandpa Drac always close by looking out for signs that his grandson will start showing signs he is a vampire. Mavis thinks Dennis might be missing out on a human upbringing so she and Jonny travel to California to find out more. Drac is left in charge of his grandson and gets up to all sorts of mayhem trying to bring out his vampire side. It's not until the very end of the film that we discover whether Dennis will be more human or vampire.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

They loved the party scene and also the camp.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

4 stars from me and 5 stars from the children.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

Really good experience at Westfield. Great seats and fun before the film with the larger than life characters. The masks and treats were a nice touch.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

Yes I would recommend this film. Very funny for all the family to watch together.

Thanks very much for the tickets. We had a fun time.

Watch the trailer below

If you attended a screening, please answer the questions below:

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC my two sons aged 7 and 9
Q2. Your overall summary of the film
really good. The film had some comical parts, and some serious parts. It was a good film for primary aged children to discuss differences and changing to be who someone else wants you to be, as well as the idea behind loving people just the way they are. The characters were likeable and fun, and the plot moved fairly quickly with no really scary parts or confusing bits. The film ended on a fun note and the children came away happy.
Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DS2 liked the ending, with Dennis now being his favourite character. DS1 liked Frank. I was a bit keen on Frank too :-)
Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
i would give it 4 stars. Boys said the same, though they went in raving about it today at school and haven't stopped chatting about it to each other or their friends so I think it's heading towards a 5!
Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
good. DS1 doesn't like characters like the full sized ones they had, but the staff in them were really good and didn't approach anyone without them going to them, so the boys were happy to wave and chat from a distance. The atmosphere was good, was nice to meet other mumsnetters. The popcorn and water and masks were fun and well received, and the lack of adverts good when they were really excited. The screen was a nice size with comfortable seats, and we shuffled around a bit to make sure people got to sit together. We really enjoyed it
Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why? yes I would. I liked the film, it was easy going with no upsetting bits but a good story to chat about afterwards. One I think we will be getting on dvd

I did post a couple of photos on Twitter, to the hashtag on Sunday as asked. One of us with our masks

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with?
DD1 (9) and me (37). We attended the Trafford Centre screening.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A fun family film. We'd not seen Hotel Transylvania before, but liked the characters. Some good jokes that worked for both kids and grown ups. Animation was excellent and I can see that it would gave been even better in 3D. So much product placement which felt very odd.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
DD's favourite character was Drac because he was funny. Her favourite bit was when Dennis was thrown off the tower to learn to fly and Drac swooping in to save him when he couldn't.

Q4 Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it? 4 out of 5 from both of us.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
As PP have said the Trafford Centre screening was very disorganised. Such a shame as we went to the MN preview of Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs a couple of years ago which was amazing. Lovely to have a free trip to the cinema though!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes, fun film to watch with the kids.

Thanks for picking us to take part.

BlueBlueBelles · 05/10/2015 20:32

I feel so bad for you guys in Manchester. This was my children's first experience of 3D and that was the biggest part of the excitement, over anything else. To have not even had that after all the other let downs - I know DS1 (who has ASD) would have had a meltdown at that point.

sfancy · 05/10/2015 20:53

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

I attended with my DC's ages 7 and 5

Q2. Your overall summary of the film- We had previously seen the original and enjoyed it! My DC's enjoyed this a lot and enjoyed the masks and the popcorn as well. They really enjoyed the different monsters in the movie, in particular Frankenstein.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

They really enjoyed the different monsters in the movie, in particular Frankenstein.

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

I would give the movie a 3.5/5 because I preferred the original but my kids would give this a 4.5/5 because they loved it and wrote about it in their diaries!

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

It was a nice experience but the cinema was freezing! Other than that it was great!

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

I would recommend it to friends and family because it was enjoyable for everyone to watch and is a feel good movie with an important message.

Q1. Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC
I attended with my two DDs who are 5 & 3 who love the first film (although very nearly didn't make it into the screening as my youngest was mortified of the people dressed as the characters (never seen her like it before!)

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A very funny film, with jokes for all ages to enjoy (with a few aimed more at the adults!) that will have you giggling out loud. It also has a heartwarming tale of acceptance of change and the message that it's good to be different..you don't always have to fit in and be how you think others want you to be.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
Blobby going for a pee, Mavis doing some sweet tricks on the BMX and drinking Slushies, The whole 'end' with Dennis...don't want to give much away!!
They loved Mavis, Blobbie, Murray, Frank...everyone! They had lots of favourite characters!

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it 4 my DCs say 5!

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
It was ok..it was a bit stressful as my youngest was in bits everytime she saw the people in character costumes and my other daughter was gutted she couldn't go and meet them because of it..but otherwise it was enjoyable.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?
Yes I would, it's a great fun family film and definitely worth watching!

I attended with DH and DS12 and DD10.

Q2. Your overall summary of the film
A warm, humourous family movie with a great script and lots of jokes (for both kids and adults!). There is an underlying message in the film that says you should accept people for what they are, regardless of their differences.

Q3. What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?
They loved the bit when Dennis single-handedly knocks out all the monsters at the end. They also loved it when he was thrown off the tower. He was their favourite character. DD said 'he was so cute and I loved his hair!'

Q4. Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?
I would give it 3 stars. DCs gave it 4 stars.

Q5. Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?
Lovely - well organised and the staff were very friendly. DCs loved the dressed up characters in the beginning. Thank you for the lovely popcorn, water and masks. They went down a treat! Cinema trips are quite pricey now so this was a lovely treat.

Q6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friends and family? Why?
Yes I would. It's a lovely, funny family movie to watch together. And it's nice to have a movie with a nice moral message.

Firstly, thank you for choosing us. We had a fab time and loved every minute of it.

Who did you attend the screening with – including the ages of your DC

DH, Myself, DD aged 8 and DS aged 5.

Your overall summary of the film

I really enjoyed it. I liked how we got to see the other side of Drac. I felt for Dennis Senior though, even at the end he still would not have got his text wish. Smile

DH was annoyed at the product placement, he felt there was too much of it. I am inclined to agree. I know it is a Sony film but it was a bit overt.

DD loved it and DS was keen to point out that although it was a bit scary it was all OK in the end.

What was your DC’s favourite part of the film? What was their favourite character?

For DD it was the invisible man, she was rooting for him to have a positive outcome. DD liked when Frank set fire to the camp. She did point out though that he had lost his fear of fire from the first movie.

For DS it was Drac. He liked his droll sense of humour. I think the “Blah, blah, blah” Dennisovitch’s first words bit was his favourite.

Out of 5, how many stars would you give the film? How many would your DC give it?

We would all give it a 4. I would watch it again.

Overall, what was your experience like of the screening?

We were in London and had a fabulous time. The staff were really attentive and ensured everyone got a picture with the characters. We tweeted our pictures as requested.

The seats were comfy and we loved the popcorn and water provided. The masks are a firm favourite and have been taken around school to show what we did at the weekend.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Hotel Transylvania 2 to friend and family? Why?

Yes, it was a feel good family movie with enough humour for both adults and children alike. I have already been recommending it for a half-term activity to friends.

DS with Mavis - the other characters were too big for his liking!

Question 1 Attended with DS 9
Question 2.Apart from the last fight section this is a very gentle film and possibly aimed at a slightly younger audience. The film is full of colour and spectacle with great animation and 3D effects but slightly lacking in action until the last section. Did rely a bit on having seen the first film to pick up the story line but all became clear after a few minutes.
Question 3. DS's favourite section was the last fight section when Dennis showed his true nature and the family, all generations, united in the final fight moments.
Question 4. Adult rating 3/5 DS 4/5.
Question 5. The screening was a bit less organised than previous ones we have been to with MN and no additional activity other than the characters wandering around. Vue staff were helpful. As other posts have mentioned seating was not allocated which meant lots of shuffling around to help younger children stay with parents. I noticed some people left as they could not get suitable seats. Vue could have used their normal booking screen to make the seating work if they had been given the bookings in advance. There was quite a delay from going into the cinema until the film started which at 20 minutes was a long time for the younger children.
Question 6. Not for the faint hearted child but would recommend to anyone suitable.

For some reason it is not publishing the photo from the phone app. I have logged on to put this here.

What a lovely family day out! We were greeted by a number of characters, including an 8 foot tall Frankenstein and a mummy !! We had seats together where my DC's were playing with the masks and amusing themselves. The popcorn and the water was also a lovely surprise.

The movie was very family friendly-good for the little ones and something adults could enjoy as well! There were some very lovely messages in the movie about how it's ok to be different and to accept others who are not the same. I must admit that I had a few chuckles during the film.

I attended with my DC's ages 6,7,7.

My DC's favourite character was Drac while mine was the mother in law.
The Kids gave it a 4/4 and I rate it the same.

I would absolutely recommend this! Thanks Mumsnet!

Q1 I went with my dd, aged 7
Q2 we both found it really funny, they threw in a few nice jokes for adults (Bluetooth). I thought it started a little slowly but quickly found its groove. It was nice for dd to see all her old faves from the first film, plus cute Dennis.
Q3 dd's fave bit was the monsters' road trip with Dennis, especially when they all had to try to get home on the scooter/bike thing after the hearse was destroyed.
Q4 dd gave it five stars, I would give it four.
Q5 the screening was amazing, it was so exciting to see the dressed-up characters and be given the free masks and popcorn. The cinema was great, really comfy and steeply tiered seating so no worries about a tall adult sitting in front and spoiling the kids' views. Only one tiny gripe was maybe the children could have been given the special 3d glasses for kids, but dd seemed to manage ok with the adult ones.
Q6 I've already told a few friends about it, I thought it was a really entertaining kids/family film. Thanks so much for the tickets.
