We all have ideas about what our children will and won't eat... and then they completely surprise us.

Has your child ever loved a food you were convinced they'd refuse? Maybe they happily tucked into something spicy, developed a taste for olives, or unexpectedly became obsessed with curry or sushi!

If you're happy to share, we'd love to hear about it. Your story might even encourage another parent to try something new with their own child. 🍽

Leave your comments by 13/8/26, to be entered into the Rosa's Thai voucher draw.

I don't have kids so I expect I'm not in the draw.

My brother was the fussiest eater. I have seen my mum make him a ham sandwich when the rest of us were having a Sunday roast.

But when we went on holiday to France a miracle happened, he would point at something on the menu and ask for it. He didn't know what he was getting and he always ate it.

Then back home he was back to white bread sandwiches.

Two kids, 8 & 5 - both love calamari and my eldest on holiday last year ate a sea bass 'fully intact' with skins, bones, eye still present etc. I still remember when he was two years old and would only eat plain toast so I'm amazed at how far he's come 🤣

ruqiya1965 · 24/07/2026 19:32

Weirdly enough my youngest loves everything. The only thing he won't eat is offal. He even does weird combos. Honestly, I don't know where he gets it from as he certainly does not get it from me!

Spicy food. I didn't grow up around spicy food and first time I had it was when I got married and spent time at my in laws. The kids love the stuff though and always asking to have 'nan's spicy insert dish'.

Ox heart.

Natenno · 24/07/2026 20:41

Both my daughters aged 6 and 8 love olives and have done from a very early age (1-2) to the point they actually tried to bring jars to the cinema to eat instead of popcorn 🤣

Teriyaki octopus. They’re huge fans of Japanese food but the current fad is specifically octopus.

zebrazoop · 24/07/2026 21:44

My 10 year old loves mussels , didn’t expect that

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 24/07/2026 22:02

DS - tuna steak, crab, rabbit, goat

DD - grapes & satsuma with salad 🤷‍♀️

ilbehonest · 24/07/2026 22:04

my autistic son tried squid in Tenerife and now he absolutely loves calamari. He calls it chicken squid. He is so fussy I really wasn't expecting it!

salemaxo · 25/07/2026 19:24

Broccoli. Like, it's so strange as you always hear when growing up that broccoli is awful and sometimes I feel like psychologically that sets up someone to hate it. But my kids have always loved their broccoli as I've always made sure that they didn't hear anything negative about any food whilst growing up.

Flax seeds, we now have them.sprinkled on everything!

Haselnuss · 25/07/2026 19:32

Salt and pepper squid! Never thought a child who rejects fish fingers would like it,but there you go!

alshareif · 25/07/2026 19:35

Seaweed. This was my niece and honestly I was pleasantly surprised. Not a lot of people I know like seaweed and I definitely thought my niece would also hate it, but no, she absolutely loves it. Kids always amaze me.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/07/2026 19:37

My DDs was marsh samphire, the first ‘green vegetable’ my DD would eat. Which has to be a bit of an ‘only on MN…’ type of thing.Grin

(no idea about the poll, I’ve never had bubble teaConfused)

I was convinced my 4-year-old would pull a face if I offered them a lychee, but to my surprise they absolutely loved it! They called it a "magic fruit" because of the juicy middle and kept asking for "just one more." It reminded me not to judge what they'll eat before they've even had the chance to try it—children can be full of delicious surprises! 🍈😊

I was convinced my son would turn his nose up at mango sticky rice. Rice for pudding? With fruit? I thought there was no chance! We ordered one to share at a Thai restaurant, and after one cautious taste he declared it "the best dessert ever" - and learned a lesson too.

squidgem · 29/07/2026 14:02

My kids love sushi and teriyaki rice bowls, with loads of different veggies piled on top.

Runningshorts · 29/07/2026 16:16

Ramen noodles with a bit of spice. I was very surprised.

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 29/07/2026 17:07

My couple enjoyed pad thai - which I thought would be too spicy for them - but they loved it. I am more open minded now and let them choose a bit more from menus when eating out. They also loved prawn crackers (after getting over their inital disappointment that they weren't Christmas crackers ha ha)

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/07/2026 17:23

DC1 loved chick peas from the off and DC2 Marmite.

onlyhereforthefood · 29/07/2026 21:00

Sushi, she loves sushi, especially with a hefty dose of wasabi

prettypeace · 29/07/2026 22:04

My DD has grown her own courgette plant and is very proud - not only does she eat her homegrown organic vegetables, she offers them to me too, win, win!

Mammyloveswine · 30/07/2026 01:44

Soft shell crab… 8 year old absolutely loves it and was 6 when he first had it 😂

shoebedo434 · 30/07/2026 20:12

sushi! He loves it! Unfortunately it is not the cheapest food but it is super healthy
