What's your secret weapon for surviving sick days with little ones?

It's never ideal when cold and flu season hits your house, but having some tricks up your sleeve can help. We'd love to know how you handle it when everyone's under the weather.

Is there a particular meal that always comforts poorly DC? Perhaps grabbing the duvets and settling in for a TV marathon does the trick, or maybe you tackle the germs head-on with plenty of anti-bac and fresh laundry.

Share your go-to sick day tips and remedies below! Everyone who posts by 25 November will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Amazon voucher (T&Cs)

Here's what Broncho Junior has to say
'Broncho Junior is chosen by mums who plan ahead. One cupboard staple, many cough types. Broncho Junior helps calm dry or chesty coughs day or night'

A cheese toastie, cut into soldiers dipped in tomato soup and CBBC.
Calpol and mum cuddles.

Theimpossiblegirl · 23/10/2025 20:56

Mine always want home made chicken noodle soup when they're unwell, with beds made up on the sofa and back to back Disney films.

ohdannyboy · 24/10/2025 10:21

Whenever they get a bunged up nose of tickly cough - I use a menthol rub for their chest for bed and this seems to always ease their sleep and symptoms.

benjaminjamesandgraham · 24/10/2025 10:56

I keep a little basket ready with Calpol and Nurofen, a thermometer, tissues, wipes, and a few “only when you’re poorly” treats (cartoons, colouring books, or a small toy). It saves rummaging through the cupboards in the early hours.

littlecottonbud · 24/10/2025 10:59

Toast, soup, and smoothies that sneak in fruit or veg. When they’re sick, nutrition is key. We’ve got our cosy corner with the upstairs duvet, Disney on loop, and endless hugs.

MumC2141 · 27/10/2025 20:08

Paracetamol and rest, with a duvet on the sofa or in bed, wherever they are most comfortable.

DidSheReallySayThat1 · 27/10/2025 20:24

n95 mask helps if put on quick enough. Avoids Mum catching it too, but maybe only works with older children who can understand.

My secret weapon for surviving sick days with little ones has to be Vicks VapoRub. A little rubbed on their chest and feet (with socks on) helps them breathe easier and settle down for some rest. I also keep warm drinks, plenty of cuddles, the tv on, and cosy blankets (We have a cushion which coverts to a blanket) — a proper comfort combination.

jacqui5366 · 28/10/2025 09:37

Always took advice from my mum, aunties and sister, all of whom had healthcare and childcare experience. I always had a medical cabinet with calpol, plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic and calamine lotion.
I would have as my secret weapon a stash of DVD's which would be a distraction from illness and their favourite blanket to cuddle on the sofa whilst unwell

Maiyakat · 28/10/2025 09:44

Lots of cuddles, curl up of the sofa with a blanket, lots of small snacks if they don't feel like eating.

ketchuporbrownsauce · 28/10/2025 09:55

Ice lollies to keep them hydrated when they don't want to drink, or have a sore throat, home made vegetable soup to get the extra vitamins down them when they are under the weather and the tv or their tablet with movies or games on.

ButterOllocks · 28/10/2025 10:11

We used to look through the argos catalogue -looking at toys 😅 but now it's magazines and books and encyclopaedias. With a dose of calpol and some vapour drops on their blanket or clothes.

Beabeautiful · 28/10/2025 10:33

Depending on how poorly they are, I would bring their bedding downstairs and make a bed on the sofa with the tv on, calpol, and lots of attention and reassurance.

Hereslookinatyoukid · 28/10/2025 10:59

Well I definitely don’t bother with cough medicines because they don’t work. Calpol, on the other hand, is a necessity.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 28/10/2025 13:00

Toast and hot chocolate whilst snuggling under the duvet on the sofa watching a good film. (Calpol too of course!)

Meadowfinch · 28/10/2025 13:08

Single mum with flu, plus caring for an energetic two year old.

Buy a door wedge. Bring a pile of toys into your bedroom plus books, laptop and snacks/water bottle. Wedge the door shut. Go back to bed.

Let ds run riot while you stay under the duvet. Let him get on with it. Let him climb in beside you for a nap or bring you toys to look at. Read him a story without getting out of bed.

Loo/nappy run every few hours. Then back to bed.

Gorondola · 29/10/2025 07:06

Often when they have sore throat or can't keep things down, the only they can tolerate is warm cocoa in small sips, or ice lolly.

benjaminjamesandgraham · 29/10/2025 10:03

a comfortable spot to lay, downstairs if possible if the others are at school, paracetamol and drinks, and the TV remote so they can take their mind off feeling unwell - learned from the past to keep a sick bucket in the hallway for a fast intervention.

loulou2012 · 29/10/2025 11:18

We’ve just had the flu here -honey, lemon and ginger drinks, steamers with albas oil, toasted bagels with marmite when able to eat, calpol and ibuprofen, tv on iPad when feeling bit brighter and tucked up in bed

Fancyquickthinker · 29/10/2025 14:06

Ice pops, calpol, the TV remote and a comfy cushion on the sofa.

Silverbirchleaf · 29/10/2025 14:07

Go with the flow. Accept that whatever you planned to do that day will be a write off. Lots of comfort food and tv.

Calliopespa · 29/10/2025 23:17

Refrigerated watermelon in our house!

littlecottonbud · 30/10/2025 11:08

I swear by a vapour rub - nothing more unsettling than not being able to breath through the nose. Another vote for ice lollies especially if they have a sore throat, really soft tissues, and staying in pj's all day.

sharond101 · 30/10/2025 14:50

Hugs and a blanket

DraftLovely · 30/10/2025 16:01

For sick bugs let them drink slightly flat lemonade. They drink more, as it's a treat, and keep up their liquids and if they throw up again then its not as harsh on them as it's slightly sweeter. Sports drinks help for all bugs and under the weather illnesses.
