What's your secret weapon for surviving sick days with little ones?

It's never ideal when cold and flu season hits your house, but having some tricks up your sleeve can help. We'd love to know how you handle it when everyone's under the weather.

Is there a particular meal that always comforts poorly DC? Perhaps grabbing the duvets and settling in for a TV marathon does the trick, or maybe you tackle the germs head-on with plenty of anti-bac and fresh laundry.

Here's what Broncho Junior has to say
'Broncho Junior is chosen by mums who plan ahead. One cupboard staple, many cough types. Broncho Junior helps calm dry or chesty coughs day or night'

Duvet in front of tv. Basin for being sick in with lots of old towels in case of missing. Calpol and cuddles. Ice lollies for fever when kids not eating.

Whenever they get a bunged up nose of tickly cough - I use a menthol rub for their chest for bed and this seems to always ease their sleep and symptoms.

Ooh. Which one? My little girl is 11 months is it suitable? Thank you

EvilHerbivore · 30/10/2025 19:04

Whatever they can tolerate eating so soup, noodles, ice cream, lots to drink.
Blankets on the sofa and a nice easy film on so doesn’t matter if they doze off
And a bucket on standby!

BippityBoppety · 30/10/2025 21:33

We use Calpol, VapoRub, etc like everyone has suggested but our absolute secret weapon is...David Attenborough! Getting all snuggly under a blanket on the sofa and popping David Attenborough on, he's mesmerising for a tired and sick baby (and a tired and sick mummy and daddy haha).

Chicken broth with tiny pasta shapes in it. Also honey and lemon drinks, gargling with salt water and a cosy blanket in front of the t.v

A useful strategy if I was unwell too was have a bath with bubble bath and all the bath toys and keep topping up the hot water. That lasted most of the morning and meant that I was warm and not having to run around or stand up

lovemyflipflops · 31/10/2025 11:09

Their comforter - which they usually keep in bed, a paracetamol liquid and a vapour rub on their chest.
We have a sick bucket - and I add a spray of zoflora white linen beforehand - so the small is masked a bit for them if they do vomit.

Thank you thank you!! Got this one.

Dizzywizz · 31/10/2025 20:51

Definitely a duvet day with a film on!

buckleycat1983 · 01/11/2025 21:53

We relocate to the lounge & make a 'nest' on the sofa of duvet & pillows! Snuggle up for as long as possible, abandon all chores unless absolutely necessary. Lots of easy food & drinks - soup, soft bread, icy water & lollies (for sore throats). Son has full control of TV - last time he was poorly we watched epsiode upon episode of Mortimer & Whitehouse (which was brilliant!) - it's a good excuse to ignore the housework & focus on some connection - my son is not 'huggy' unless he's poorly - then he loves it!

Onlyontuesday · 02/11/2025 18:16

We have an unlimited screens rule if genuinely sick. I put a few duvets on the sofa.

Frozen juice, squash or smoothie as ice lollies is helpful for fluids.

Runningshorts · 02/11/2025 22:09

My tip is to take it easy as often I know I'll have the illness next. Sofa with a duvet. Use their daytime sleeps to get stuff done or have a rest. Try and line up DH to take a day off work for any long winded illnesses, so it's not all on me.

DinkyDaffodil · 04/11/2025 10:08

A well stocked medical stock from pain relief, insect bite cream, a decongestant, some poxclin, as well as plasters and antiseptic (and take a lesser version on holidays too). When they are ill a hot waterbottle, and a distraction like a tablet to watch a cartoon on, as well as mum giving lots of cuddles.

littlecottonbud · 05/11/2025 18:32

Having a great boss who understands what it is to have an ill child really helps with the guilt, and lets my make up the time and work I have missed not as overtime - as well as the bog standard medical items for emergency.

DenDenDenise · 06/11/2025 15:54

My secret weapon for surviving sick days with my 3-year-old is cuddles on the sofa, a stash of Calpol, tissues, vicks and plenty of juice and cartoons to keep them comfy while they rest

jacqui5366 · 07/11/2025 07:58

My secret weapon for surviving sick days with my little ones is keeping a “comfort kit” ready, stocked with snacks, books, tissues, a thermometer, and quiet activities ,so I can focus on cuddles and care instead of scrambling for supplies.

HobNobAddict · 07/11/2025 14:43

When both my toddlers came down with a nasty bug at the same time, I was completely overwhelmed — no sleep, constant laundry, and endless cuddles on demand. I searched threads on Mumsnet for advice and found so many practical tips from other parents: how to keep fluids up when they refuse drinks, easy bland foods that actually work, and the magic of setting up a “sick day station” with towels, tissues, and comfort items I found really useful.

Chocja · 07/11/2025 21:12

A day of favourites, toys, food and tv

whitepuffyclouds · 08/11/2025 11:44

If it was me that was sick, I'd lay on the sofa under a blanket and my children would play doctors and nurses with me as the patient. They'd come and take my temperature with their toy thermometer from their doctor's kit.

When they were sick, we'd snuggle on the sofa and watch tv.

MummyChocolateMonster · 08/11/2025 19:51

Tomato soup is the family comfort food. Plus duvet on the sofa and watching old cartoons like Tom & Jerry!

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 09/11/2025 18:36

Heinz tomato soup all the way!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/11/2025 20:11

Not using the word poorly for a start.

whitepuffyclouds · 10/11/2025 13:22

Hot water with honey and a slice of lemon to drink, plus a heated throw to snuggle up in.

Lemonbaytree · 11/11/2025 12:43

We have disposable gloves for cleaning up sick, have old towels and old spare duvet sets in case of the others getting ruined.
Alice band for the girls to stop hair going into sick.
Stock up on Calpol/ibuprofen.
Menthol rub.
Extra pillows to keep their head up higher so the phlegm doesn't drain into the chest if have a cold.
Calpol syringe to get extra fluids in when they don't feel like drinking.
