If you have an under stairs space, put your dryer there, I find that using a sock bag for underwear helps the sorting process, fold t shirts whilst hot from the dryer - they won't need ironing. Buy detergent and softener which stacks in your cupboards - bottles take up way too much space !

Washing in before bed, hang out first thing. In winter I have a retractable Minky line up high in my utility as it’s warmer up there and an IKEA octopus for socks and pants. Never use the dryer ( have a combi washer/dryer)
Also I wear clothes a few times before washing and spot clean if necessary .Only socks and pants are washed after one wear( apart from sweaty days and exercise clothing obvs.)

Stripeswithsnoopy · 15/10/2023 13:42

Fold and put away clothes which don’t need ironing straight from the line/washing stand to avoid generating a basket of clean laundry then gets so creased it then DOES need ironing!!

ManAboutTown · 15/10/2023 18:05

There;'s just me so it's quite easy.

  1. Main load in on a Sunday - retrieved from machine and put out to dry late afternoon / early evening
  2. Tuesday morning duvet cover goes in. Cleaner comes round on Tuesday - puts the Sunday load away, irons the work shirts , strips the bed and puts the rest of the bed liinen in the wash
  3. Friday secondary load, - usually T-shirts, socks undies, one-offs. Put away on Saturday

I put bedsheets on to the wash before school, dry them when we come back and back on the beds the same day.

littlecottonbud · 16/10/2023 07:56

stackable laundry baskets for dried ready to iron, dried ready to put away, and ready to wash.

A heated airer which folds down and stores away after use, I also have a collapsible laundry basket.

Hoolahoophop · 16/10/2023 13:59

Put a wash on timer every other night. Never go to bed without putting clothes away, either in drawers or hanging in the airing cupboard ready for ironing.

itsywitsy · 16/10/2023 15:45

My hack would be to 'try' to keep up with the laundry, have a rota for bedding, buy quick dry microfibre towels which don't take an age to dry, fold when hot out of the dryer, and buy a combined washer dryer (look at the reviews and capacity first).

SoShallINever · 16/10/2023 23:13

I have put up a cheap sunshade/ sail in the garden so that we can dry the washing under it, even if it's raining.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 16/10/2023 23:20

The key is never letting it pile up. We have a load on daily and I wash bedding every Thursday morning and then dry/put away. Keeping several sets for each bed folded inside the duvet cover with everything the bed needs (fitted sheet, pillow slips x4, flat sheet and blanket or throw) for ease.

Things like easy wear blazers, linen etc are much easier to iron if hung when wet and then sprayed with crease release.

TheShellBeach · 16/10/2023 23:29

I bought both of my sons and my husband the exact same brand and style of black socks.

I always use a wash bag for bras, and so them on their own at 20 degrees. They last much longer when washed like this.

I have a routine for doing bedlinen - it gets washed on a Saturday and dries on the airer.

I never mix fabrics or colours.

I've just started to use laundry detergent sheets. Much cheaper and just as efficient as powder.

DinkyDaffodil · 17/10/2023 08:45

Put your washing machine/combined washer dryer into your downstairs bathroom, or the cupboard under the stairs, more room in your kitchen for folding and ironing - this could be reversed for having this space as a drying room with a dehumidifier and airer.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 17/10/2023 10:39

vintage lloyd loom laundry baskets in bathroom one for while or pale one dark or bright. Bedlinen goes straight from bed to washing machine first thing ni the morning and back on bed in evening. I wash all towels dishclothes etc on hot wash on a friday, dishclothes get put in a small tub by washing machine every evening until wash day. Washing gets done when any basket is two thirds full. I prefer to do 3 loads after one another on saturday and one lot of ironing rather than a load a day

Beabeautiful · 17/10/2023 12:39

The only way I can organise my laundry space is to invest in a combi washer dryer, stacking laundry baskets forr darks and lights, a heated arier which I can fold down - and an empty greenhouse for winter outdoor drying.

user1467306011 · 17/10/2023 16:41

Looking for to buy one for our house. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. X

MrsRobert · 17/10/2023 16:46

Many of my clothes can't be tumble dried and in the winter, clothes don't dry outside if I leave them out all day. I put those in a warm room of the house with a closed door and use a dehumidifier. There's a lot of condensation in our home already so the dehumidifier is brilliant. So satisfying emptying it!

lovemyflipflops · 18/10/2023 10:43

My space saving hack would be use stackable baskets, and use your storage space (under stairs, garage, porch, for storing them) A foldable airer, and ironing board which can be hung in a utility room, and folding the drying whilst hot and steaming from the dryer to avoid ironing.

jacqui5366 · 18/10/2023 14:37

Washing machine in the garage and a heated airer for the towels and cotton t shirts which take an age to dry.
Drying balls in the tumble dryer to separate the smalls and encourage even drying

@littlecottonbud love this where did you get it?

itsmeagainagain · 18/10/2023 18:45

Also use a heated airer which is really economical only costs about 4p per hour to run. Save myself time by not folding kids clothes just dump in their drawers (like they do) Fold and hang my own clothes and iron minimally.

TrustPenguins · 18/10/2023 18:57

Just the one laundry basket but everyone knows where it is and is expected to use it.

Regular cleaning of washing machine drum (ours tells us when it needs doing).

Everyone puts their own clothes away.

Using a tumble dryer helps keep on top of things.

evryevrytime · 18/10/2023 19:40

If I could, I would move my washing machine and dryer upstairs. Laundry is generated and put away in bedrooms so it makes sense to have the washer/dryer on that floor if possible. I don't have space for two machines to sit on the floor, but actually, perhaps I could find a space if I stack them!

My hack would be buy non iron trousers, microfibre towels which don't require much to dry them, and a combi washer dryer to save space.
I've just bought a dehumidifier now I am drying some items indoors - speeds up drying and keeps my home less humid.
