A creen which you hoist from wheels fixed to your ceiling - they dry out of sight - it's and age old way making a comeback .

LittleGlowingOblong · 12/10/2023 01:18

I’m menopausal and my child is pre-pubescent. Neither of us sweat much so I’m finding just sponging off isolated specks of dirt etc is working really well.

But, yeah, hate laundry. It’s not the washing, or the drying, it’s the putting away.

ThornInMySide84 · 12/10/2023 07:41

Always, always whites and colours separately . I also try and save up towels and do those together on a higher temperature wash.

Jennalong · 12/10/2023 08:45

Very laid back . 1 laundry basket , do the washing when it's full , Chuck it all in , bras in a bra bag . Outside to dry if not raining . Inside on a laundry pulley in utility if raining with dehumidifier on .
Don't iron unless absolutely necessary , and it hasn't for at least a year !

Montydoo · 12/10/2023 11:26

My hack would be get the children to wash their own bedding, (if you have an easy to operate machine like me - using the quick wash setting)
Invest in a heated airer (I got mine second hand and it's a drying godsend)

I don't have a laundry space. I don't even have a tumble dryer. Sometimes I hang wet washing from every available surface and then stand in the rain so that nobody can see me crying over the fucking laundry.

Is that the sort of hack/tip you mean?

😆

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 12/10/2023 15:17

I use a timer so washing is finished when I get up and then again after I'm back from work.

CMOTDibbler · 12/10/2023 15:47

A dehumidifier - everything that belongs on hanger goes on it out of the machine, gets hung up over the dehumidifer and then can go straight in wardrobes from there.
When my extension is finished I will have a laundry room with a unit built to hold laundry baskets so all wet washing will dry in there, get ironed if needed and sorted/ folded into each persons basket (plus an airing cupboard one for towels/sheets) there and then. Fold out drying racks are going on the walls so things can be on hangers or on there directly.
Am hoping very much this will contain all the laundry nicely

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/10/2023 21:52

Lol at stylish laundry space set up. My laundry space is the corner of my kitchen where the washing machine is plumbed in. When the heating is on the winter all our radiators are festooned with drying pants and socks.

Sleepinghippo · 12/10/2023 22:07

Putting a wash on the night before so it can go straight on the airer in the morning when I have more energy to do the boring, time consuming part of the washing.

PrudeyTwoShoes · 12/10/2023 22:24

I recently learnt (on here actually) that the quick cycle on walking machines aren't eco friendly. My standard wash is a few hours long so, whenever possible, I load the washer and put in on a delay so that the cycle finishes for Eden I wake up. That way I can hang it immediately.

Matilda1981 · 13/10/2023 07:26

I’ve got 4 kids and a farmer husband so we have a lot of washing!!!
We have a nice large utility room and I have a washing basket in there and everyone brings their washing down (including the 3 year old!) and places it into the big basket - i separate into whites and non whites/towels etc and wash (at least 2 loads a day). Then dry using washing line/dryer/Aga, we all have our own clean washing baskets so when washing is dry I fold and place into the baskets (luckily I have a large worktop to put them all on). Everyone takes their own clothes upstairs as and when they are full and puts them away! I have a basket in the utility room for children’s socks as these get shared between the kids!!!

Montydoo · 13/10/2023 08:49

A collapsible laundry basket - store away once you've sorted your washing.

MollySco9 · 13/10/2023 11:53

We have colour coded baskets. But that's about as far as it goes tbh

LateKate · 13/10/2023 12:11

Laundry is the bane of my life and we are limited on space so have to stay on top of it. The best thing I ever did was teach my kids young that everything goes into the wash basket and clean clothes are put away daily.

I stay on top of things by ensuring a load is in the machine before I go to bed at night on timer ready to click on at 6am to use the last hour of cheaper electricity. We then try and dry as much outside as possible but when it needs a go in the dryer it is spun for an extra cycle and put in with a dry towel to speed up drying time and reduce cost. There is normally then another load during the day as there is always sports clothes or club uniforms as well as bedding, towels and normal clothes.

I think my biggest tip is train the family though to help without being nagged, all my kids can and do, sort laundry, put laundry on, peg it out and put it away including the 8 year old so it doesn't all fall on me or my husband. That and little and often.

Looking at the sunny but blustery weather now and wishing I had pegged a load out before work but it was raining then...difficult to get it right!

chickenpotnoodle · 13/10/2023 12:38

My laundry hack would be to invest in a heated airer for winter when you cannot dry outdoors, it costs pennies to run and folds away when not in use.

Pushmepullyou · 13/10/2023 20:43

I do a wash every night then fold and put a new wash on every morning. Stack by person then take one person’s stack up stairs each time I go. If I miss a day I get completely overwhelmed

Dashel · 14/10/2023 05:48

Having a washing machine with an app control or timer so you can start it when you are still in bed and have more drying time.

ALso if you have a utility room get a pull down airer, it keeps all the washing out of the way

devildeepbluesea · 14/10/2023 07:54

Washing machine timed to finish at 7am, get it out hanging early.
Nice big machine - can fit loads in.
Everything goes in together, no sorting. Works fine, I just make sure I wash any new, brightly coloured clothes separately a few times.
I fold clothes as I take them off the line, means I only ever have to iron things like linen or cotton shirts. Also makes putting away really quick.
I don’t wash clothes that aren’t dirty until they’ve been worn a few times.
In winter I just use a rack next to a radiator, most things dry in a day. If you throw a double duvet cover over rack and radiator that speeds up drying brilliantly.

Cotswoldmama · 14/10/2023 08:28

I have so little space but I have found those heated airer things pretty amazing. They fold down to flat so I store it down the side of a book shelve so it's hidden when not in use and doesn't take up any space. Annoyingly it takes up quite a lot of space when in use but it does actually really help heat the room! So that's a bonus dry clothes and a cosy room and it doesn't cost much to run.

LaundrySorter · 14/10/2023 09:04

I recently realised that having two large laundry hampers was turning washing into a nightmare. I tend to wash by type - so a load of towels, a load of tops, all the socks and pants. And I was constantly going through a huge basket to pick out the bits I needed for a wash. Plus one of the kids will sometimes ask for a specific top or something washed (teens!) and it was buried at the bottom of a huge hamper.

I've done this and it's worked so well. I have two of these, so 6 baskets. 6x2 cube unit from Argos with the middle dividers not used (£50) and £4.99 washing baskets from Home Bargains. Everything is now sorted where it needs to be before a wash and it looks so much neater. I have stickers on the sides of each basket for what it's for and everyone separates their own dirty laundry.

If you have a downstairs bathroom - have a clear out and put your washer and dryer there - the water and drainage is already there - saves a lot of room in the kitchen

Have a basket for each person in the house, stackable is best and unload the dryer into the right baskets.
I get people to look through and collect their non ironing bits, then on Sundays whatever is left in each basket gets ironed.

ButterOllocks · 14/10/2023 18:35

Use the eco setting on your machine, use a colour catcher (just in case) check pockets for tissues - the you don't have to wash twice, use a washing bag for you smalls

Castlebutnotahaven · 14/10/2023 20:10

Dirty laundry basket and clean laundry basket for all children. They are responsible for empty their clothes laundry basket every week.
