Whether you’re purchasing for your own baby or as a gift for a loved one, selecting newborn baby clothes can be a really special experience. However, there can be a lot to consider, so in celebration of their new organic cotton newborn range, Baby Boden would like to hear what’s important to you when choosing baby clothes.

Here’s what Boden has to say: “Baby Boden is excited to share its brand new newborn organic cotton range. In a selection of aww-inspiring designs with Boden signature details, the new collection is made from snuggly soft organic cotton which is kinder to the planet and gentle on the softest of skin.

The collection features snuggly zip-up sleepsuits, bodies in packs of 3, reversible styles, dresses, hats, dungarees, and also gift sets ranging from 4 to 7 pieces, which all come in a matching fabric bag or a beautiful Baby Boden gift box - perfect for gifting new parents who are expecting a new arrival. The whole range is machine washable, and carefully constructed with the safety and comfort of little ones in mind so you don’t have to worry.”

Do you put a lot of thought into the fabric of your baby’s clothes, perhaps preferring organic cotton? Is it important to you that your baby’s clothes are as soft as possible? Perhaps your clothing choices are influenced by the fabric’s effect on your baby’s skin? Or are you most interested in the washability and longevity of your choices? Maybe you’re most interested in the placement of poppers, buttons or zips, to ensure it’s convenient when you need to do a swift nappy change?

All who share what they believe to be most important when purchasing baby clothes will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 Boden voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Easy to wash and soft to touch. Not expensive for everyday use, but I would have loved to receive organic cotton clothes as a gift.

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 25/01/2021 20:45

I don't like things separated into girls and boys. My DD has a Boden coat from Next. I found it in the boys' section. It's bright blue with stars. It's wonderful. Why do girls always have to be covered in unicorns? We need more gender neutral nothing.

I’ve always been partial to Baby Boden.

Envelope style necks and soft material are really important. I like the clothing to have a certain snuggle factor and feel good against the skin.

I like the clothes to have a nice look to them too. No slogans at all! My favourite baby range from Boden was an Arctic style one in grey with blue bears; I think my DS had the full set. The full length zip body suits were nice too that we had.

The shorts and T-shirt sets with lovely bright colours and easy pull on shorts were a favourite.

There are so many things I wish you had done in the older range too so I could get the larger sizes for DS!

How soft they are and how well they wash are important. So is practically, things that constantly have to go over the head aren't great. I also love ethically sourced clothes 😊

glasshalfsomething · 25/01/2021 23:09

In order of priority;

  1. Ease of dressing - yes, yes to zips!
  2. Long wearing material - I’m happy to pay more if I can be confident in reselling, gm handing down or thrifting.
3 colour and design - give me bright rainbow colours and patterns
  1. Make it washable at 40 and suitable fir the dryer - no shrinkage please.
Ewentheawakesheep · 26/01/2021 01:32

Most important is comfort and then quality in terms of it lasting lots of washes. I tend to avoid white/pale colours as they stain easily.

excitednerves · 26/01/2021 05:41

I look for items that are easy to put on, there’s nothing worse than wrestling a baby into an awkward outfit.
Secondly I want the clothes to be comfortable, soft fabric, no denim for babies, soft waistbands, no scratchy trims
I also love clothes that can be tumble dried although it’s not a deal breaker if they’re not, but they’ll be worn more often if they can be easily washed and dried. Absolutely no hand wash only items though!
I love fun prints, Boden do this really well. I have a boy and a girl so gender neutral items that can be passed down are perfect.

My priorities for buying clothes for our newborn were around the quality of the cotton. It needs to be soft and wash well without labels in places that might irritate (e.g. around the neckline).
Envelope necks and poppers in all the right places are also really handy!
Baby clothes also need to be able to wash on a normal wash cycle.

We didn't find out the sex of our baby and we really struggled to find anywhere that sold neutral baby clothes that weren't just boring plain white.

Gardenermumtobe · 26/01/2021 08:12

Clothes that are easy to fasten, poppers are good but buttons aren't! Patterns are great as they fascinate my daughter now she's just past 3 months. Outfits which don't require socks as she kicks them off at least once every hour! Also colours which don't show poo stains which are difficult to get out in the wash Grinbut also don't require any special washing instructions.

KnobJockey · 26/01/2021 08:16

1- true unisex style. I like bright colours, I didn't find out what sex I was having, but all clothes were either pink, blue, grey or cream. I would have loved bright red dungarees, without flowers or a digger.
2- cost. I don't want to pay £15 for a t-shirt that gets worn twice before it's too small
3- quality. I do love organic cotton, it's so much softer

Cakeandslippers · 26/01/2021 08:35

I look for soft and comfortable looking. I try and avoid those tiny fiddly buttons (definitely designed by someone who had never met a real baby). Colours and patterns are important too, I like both bright and muted but dislike all the really obviously gendered stuff. I'm happy to dress my girl in pink and my boy in blue at times but they don't need it to be the only option. I'd prefer colours that I can use for both kids.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 26/01/2021 08:35

How soft it feels, and how it looks. I love Breton stripes and rainbow colours for babies. I would never buy washed out colours, I like babies in bright colours.

I love Boden, but I have found they come up a bit small. This could be there isn't as much stretch in the babygrows due to thicker material. They certainly sit nicely around the neck where supermarket ones stretch. The issue is you need so many for newborns and then when they start weaning it's awful if they get food stains on something expensive. I know you can get those cover all bibs, but both mine have hated those and it's often something like a snack like banana or malt loaf that stains things and I bung it in the wash and forget the stain remover. Once washed in it's there forever.

I looked a lot at Boden baby this time, but didn't buy. As with my first I got a lot of baby bird which was Jules with Mothercare and of course that is no more. I really like the Scandi brands. I didn't find much range and Boden is so expensive for packs/ sets of baby grows. I like pattern, but not fussy details. For babies I prefer bodysuits, babygrows, pull on trousers. I look at design and then price. Unfortunately I can't justify a really high price even for good quality when they only wear them for such a short time. My youngest baby is one now, and will certainly look to get some pull on jersey dresses in the summer from Boden.

mummytolittledragons · 26/01/2021 13:13

Babies grow so fast . I'm not bothered about if their clothes are organic or not.

sheilads105 · 26/01/2021 14:27

Natural fibres are a must as is easy low-temperature washing. I prefer gender neutral clothing particularly as they grow from being babies into children.
I love clothes that are easy to put on too...big buttons, poppers etc.

excitedemmi · 26/01/2021 15:43

Ease to get on and off, cute and price...

excitedemmi · 26/01/2021 15:45

Longevity isn't important as they won't be in them very long! Baby clothes really need to be as simple as possible - e.g. grows fasten down the front, and no extra bits (frills or items stuck on the back) so that it is as comfortable as possible for baby!

excitedemmi · 26/01/2021 15:47

Gender neutral also important here. Especially as we're not finding out the sexes until after the birth, so won't be buying any "gendered" clothing whatsoever. Also, all clothing needs to be able to go in the washing machine and tumble dryer for ease.

bjjgirl · 26/01/2021 17:13

Easy to wash, natural fibres if possible and hand fold over Mittons.

For style, to be able to pull down or pull up for poo Nami style incidents with poppers.

Minster2012 · 26/01/2021 18:13

I love zips on sleepsuits with covered fastenings
Ease of washing
Funky BRIGHT designs that are gender neutral & different
Grippers on feet for past 12 months
Matching bonnets with ties under the chin, bonus points for ears again gender neutral & not just "foxes"

Some babies don't like to be shrinking violets!

Matching for siblings, mum, dad & dog too! Why not!

Whatflavourjellybabyisnice · 26/01/2021 20:26

Soft and gentle on the skin,
Easy openings,
Age appropriate and sometimes gender neutral, but age appropriate above that.
Pastels are quite nice but I like bright colours too.
Peter pan collars are another favourite.
A retro towelling baby grow and other garments such as leggings with feet would be nice.

ToriS78 · 26/01/2021 20:57

Hi there - thinking of moving our kids to Downsend Middle School in Leatherhead. Would love to hear from any parents who have children there about good/bad bits? Thanks loads

Kweenxo · 26/01/2021 21:23

Comfort, appropriateness, quality and long lasting. Although I guess the last 2 go hand in hand.

Serender · 26/01/2021 23:20

I do mostly go for convenient stuff but when I see an outfit that is so cute, I just have to buy it.

Smilingdonkey · 27/01/2021 08:18

Comfort and quality
Will it last (can they still wear it when it's a bit big and a but small!)
Will it fit over cloth nappies
