This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories below.

We've all experienced that sinking feeling when you open the washing machine door and realise all is not as it should be, which is why Cushelle have created new Facial Tissues - designed to not fall apart in the wash. Beyond just a rogue tissue, Cushelle want to know - what's accidentally made it into your machine and ruined the whole load?

Here’s what Cushelle has to say: “Cushelle, the irresistibly cushiony soft toilet tissue brand, has launched facial tissues for colds, hay fever and messy kids! Cushelle Facial Tissues are soft, strong and also washing machine resistant, meaning they won’t break up in the wash if accidentally left in a pocket.”

Have you realised a phone or wallet was inside the machine when it was too late because of unemptied pockets? Or maybe you’ve followed cliche and accidentally washed a new red shirt along with the whites, leaving you embracing a new found love for pink? Whether it was some spare change, a felt tip pen, or your monthly train ticket that ended up in your wash, Cushelle want to hear your stories below.

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Just the other week my husband’s wireless Bluetooth headphones ended up in the wash! I was in such a rush I didn’t check properly; luckily for me I put them near the radiator to try and dry out and they were ok and he still doesn’t know lol

phillie1 · 27/02/2020 08:28

My mum , at 91 is getting increasingly mixed up, and put a bag of rubbish in her washing machine, instead of the bin!

SansaryaAgain · 27/02/2020 10:47

XDH: Sansarya have you seen my phone?
Me: Um no, where did you last--
Washing machine: THUNK, THUNK, THUNK

You can see why he's an ex...

starray · 27/02/2020 11:07

Coins, because they totally blocked up the washing machine! And tissues seem to be a regular thing that ends up in the wash...we keep forgetting to remove them from trouser pockets!

WilmaJean · 27/02/2020 11:09

A remote control for the TV Confused

BL0SS0M · 27/02/2020 11:33

tissues that weren't removed from pockets! Its always a nightmare as everything gets covered and needs re washed

helly27 · 27/02/2020 11:34

It would have to be tissues in peoples pockets for me it goes everywhere.

One of my daughter's used disposable nappies was accidentally placed in the washing machine with my older kids school clothes, all the shirts came out a horrible brown colour.

DD aged (about 1.5) managed to empty a whole pack of rice into our washing machine. We think she enjoyed to sound of it hitting the drum....

Didn't realise she'd done it. So I put a wash on. The rice somehow cooked whilst the clothes were washed. I pulled out loads of disgusting mushy rice covered clothes, wondering what the hell had happened. The washing machine repair man was unable to rescue our poor machine. Our house insurance company were sympathetic but unable to cover it.

Always having to tell my husband for not checking his pockets as I'm always finding screws, metal washers and such on the machine because he is a maintenance worker at a warehouse

I put my favourite black velvet oriental dress on the wrong cycle. The dress shrank and the pink appliqué all came off. itc was mixed in with other items and should have been dry clean only. I've also washed tissue paper in pockets before now and it makes a terrible mess, especially on woolens.

Sanitary pads Shock

A beautiful cardigan my mum had knitted for my dd - somehow it got in with the normal load. It was only on at 40 but was enough to shrink it to fit the dollies. I was very sad about it as it was a lovely cardigan. I've shrunk many a item but that one was the worst. She thought I'd done it on purpose as I didn't like it.
I find lots of stuff I've washed through not checking kids pockets. Sticks, leaves, tissues, coins, little teeny toys but nothing disastrous.

An American style heavy milkshake glass. I popped in in my wash basket as I collected my sons washing off his floor and it was destined for the dishwasher.
For some reason it went in with the wash instead and it wasn't until I was pulling the load out and there were shards of glass everywhere I was reminded !!!
£150 for the machine to be repaired.
I had to replace a lot of clothes and my lovely lace knickers were no more !!!

It’s a steep learning curve with children, so I quickly learned when my eldest DS started school that it’s great fun to stuff your pockets full of conkers, stones and ‘gems’ (aka smaller shinier stones) and various bits of playground detritus. Also came to the glaring realisation, after hearing ‘clunk-scrape-clunk-scrape’, that him being ‘helpful’ putting his trousers in the wash was because he wanted them all to be ‘nice and sparkly clean mummy’.

beckyinman · 27/02/2020 22:38

My housemate put £800 rent through the wash!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 28/02/2020 00:03

Without a doubt its comforters (blankets, cuddly toys etc) not long before nap time 😖 absolute nightmare for all involved, and it happened a few times by accident over the years with family members trying to be helpful or me scooping a wash up and not realising they've decided to play with the pile etc

Mess related it's tissues or hearing the sob of "my gliiiiiitter..." from in front of the machine which made me nearly sob - apparently they were saving some in their pocket 😖

GooodMythicalMorning · 28/02/2020 08:43

Washed my sisters brand new Italian cashmere jumper on a hot wash with the whites as it was cream and I didn't see it. It came out dolly sized. She was not impressed, especially as she brought it back from her exchange trip.

Dh is always washing gum and his work badge. the badge survives but washed chewing gum is disgusting

SillyMoomin · 28/02/2020 15:51

Oh god, it was the day I washed a trial packet of dry cat food I'd been given in the supermarket, shoved into my pocket and forgotten about.

Cat mush blobs of food stuck to everything.....

Sissymate2 · 28/02/2020 16:00

Ewwww, @Silly!
I bet the kitty cat was following the family round for weeks since kitties have extra super sonic smelling abilities

Effieray · 28/02/2020 16:06

A rasher of bacon. My son was late leaving one morning for the school bus so, unbeknownst to me, he took his unfinished breakfast (bacon) with him to eat on the way. He wrapped it in tissue and put it in his school trouser pocket, then forgot about it until his English lesson when he reached into his pocket and found it. To the hilarity of his friends, he then used it for the rest of the day as a bookmark in his reading book, before once again returning it to his pocket. When he got off the school bus it was raining and the puddles on our lane were deep and so his trousers got muddy and went straight into the wash. The rasher of bacon was surprisingly intact after it came out of the wash; just very soggy!

PenguinsCantFly · 28/02/2020 16:26

A collection of plastic animals Grin They all came out unscathed...but my DS spent the whole washing cycle watching them through the window worried about them! No amount of reassurance from me would cut it!

claza93 · 28/02/2020 19:45

Has to be car keys! We were searching for them and then heard a clunk from inside the washing machine and the next thing we saw was the car keys spinning round. They never worked after that :(

Hittapotamus · 28/02/2020 20:14

I love the rasher of bacon story Grin

Mine is DD1's plethora of badges. On a good day they clunk round attached to her cardigan. On a bad day I have to manually drain the washing machine and fish one or more out of the pump Hmm

DitaFajitaJones · 28/02/2020 20:31

I remember stripping the bed and shoving it all in the washing machine for the weekend wash. Could hear my partner's phone ringing but it was muffled, could not find it for the life of me. Slowly turn to see it slowly drowning, pressed against the glass of the washing machine. It did not survive... I also check where the phones are now every time I do a load of washing
