This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to all who took the time to post below.

We all need some rest and relaxation every now and again. A short stay away might just be the break that you and your family need to recover from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and can provide the perfect opportunity for the whole family to do activities that you wouldn’t normally get the chance to. Whether you’d like to spend your time playing board games, hiring bicycles, exploring the local towns or enjoying the facilities at the Hotel Spa, Luxury Family Holidays would like to hear from you.

Here’s what Luxury Family Hotels have to say: “Here at Luxury Family Hotels we know how important family time is and so our aim is to create places for families to make life-long memories. Whether it’s a family swim or bike ride, adventures in the gardens or exploring many of the wonderful days out near any of our hotels, every family will find something to enjoy together.”

Where in the UK would you like to go on a break away? What would your typical day look like on your family holiday? Do you have a perfectly planned schedule of the activities you plan to do? Would you rather go on a coastal stroll or a walk through the open fields of the countryside? Are there any activities that you would like to do together as a family on a UK break away which are not currently offered by hotels you’ve stayed at in the past?

Everyone who shares their favourite activities on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a two-night bed & breakfast stay at the Luxury Family Hotel of their choice*.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

somewhere where there is a good mix of sightseeing/ fun and relaxation

Dilbertian · 18/02/2020 18:09

We love open water swimming. Prefer lakes that are a bit off the beaten track, but the sea is also good. So wherever we stay need to have a good drying room.

Also love old houses that have some kind of interactive experience for visitors. Harwood House last Christmas was amazing!

Staying in old places with comfy armchairs and sofas, open fires and massive eclectic collections of books and games to indulge in after a delicious dinner featuring local produce, with a glass of something locally brewed for the adults. Bliss.

We like to visit new places on our holidays/breaks away, so anywhere in the UK TBH. But we do have a couple of favourite places we like to go to as well.
A typical day would be relaxing, not be in a hurry to do things we wanted to do. Wed go away with a list of things wed all want to do & see what we were all in the mood for doing, we never get every thing done-I think our list for each holiday/break is too long!!! Plus, wed take into account what we see when we get there & what gets recommended to us too!! Well prepared but take it as it comes, as well as the ever changing weather!! The only thing we really plan are meals, as we have a type 1 diabetic & a coeliac in our family!! Whether that means a picnic, café, restaurant, take-away or staying in our accommodation. We have a diverse amount of interests, so hard pushed to think of new activities to do, we can always find things to do based on our interests or whats offered in the area we are visiting!!

Shireslass · 18/02/2020 19:35

As a family we like long walks, stopping at a bar or a cafe and having time to talk.
We go to the beach, or local attraction and spend time enjoying what is there. We are happy wherever, we like to spend time together.

2catsand2kids · 19/02/2020 07:05

We particularly enjoy going to the coast and if it’s summer spending time on the beach playing beach games and in the water. If it’s winter we still love going for walks along the beach but having a pool at our hotel then becomes more important. Having the option to get a lovely picnic lunch from the hotel to be able to take out with us for the day would be great. Eating good quality food together as a family is really important to us. If there are national trust properties nearby we also tend to visit those.

Lake District, Cotswolds or Snowdonia. Water is preferred whether sea or lakes. Must have an indoor pool and preferably teen friendly spa or beauty treatments. Great breakfast and comfy beds! Plentiful parking on site and near to outdoor and wet weather activities.

allthingsred · 19/02/2020 10:58

Phones/tech are gone for at least 24 hours.
We will try to get outside for as much of that time as possible. Either the beach, looking for the gruffalo in the woods. Or picnic in the park..
In the evening board games & a nice meal ( winner chooses)

thetoddleratemyhomework · 19/02/2020 12:18

Lovely to get outside, going cycling all together is lovely.

Also sounds really sad but my husband and I love a hotel with a bar in the same building as our hotel room so that we can use a monitor to have a quiet drink and play a board game and just wind down and chat together once kids are asleep.

Rhumba · 19/02/2020 14:18

Love heading into the countryside for a mixture of walks and activities such as cycling, swimming and kayaking. A hotel based break gives us the chance to all come together as a family and put to the side our usual routines and demands. love playing card and board games and laughing and spending time together.

Stuckandsadintheupsidedown · 19/02/2020 15:26

I would love to go somewhere with a nice forest for walks, with nature and nice places to eat.
When we go away I try to find somewhere with large spaces to play so dd can run free, we love to try new foods or check out independent chocolate shops, petting zoos and art workshops

SamxH · 19/02/2020 17:49

Has to be a stroll along the beach, paddling in the sea, jumping waves with the kids, crabbing and building castles, then strolling to find either a pier or an arcade, win three gazillion tickets and cash them in for a huge teddy that we struggle to get into the car on the way home, followed by some proper fish and chips and a family bar for a beer (adults) and Ice cream for the kiddies, and who knows maybe a little karaoke and mum and dad dancing 😂❤️

snowplop · 19/02/2020 19:59

I asked our 3DC for their holiday wishlist:
Somewhere new
Trees to climb up
A hot tub or pool
Nice views to look at
Fast WiFi Blush
Puddings!
Seaside or mountains

Carriemac · 19/02/2020 20:05

We love a hotel stay as a treat, my kids love a hotel breakfast and we like to stay in a hotel with a bit of character.
We like a stately home, with a big estate to runaround in after to let of steam and I’m a sucker for a farm shop. The kids love the novelty of a tv in their bedroom, and we love to relax in a hotel bar after dinner.

fastliving · 19/02/2020 23:21

I love exploring beautiful countryside - I love London, but it's great to escape to appreciate the rest of the UK.
Exploring is much more fun with a few kids around, and it's a good excuse to eat ice cream!

My favourite places are Cornwall, Yorkshire, Norfolk & Isle of Skye.

I love to take my dog too and we explore as much as each place had to offer in terms of food, culture, activities and scenery,

The Lake District is next on our list as we've never been.

Shangrilalala · 20/02/2020 08:02

A clean beach. Perfect on a calm sunny day for a possible swim and fabulous for an invigorating walk on a blustery day in the depths of winter. It’s the backdrop for sandcastles, family football, rock pooling and writing messages in the sand.

An indoor pool in the hotel helps to cover all weather bases too!

We love the unspoilt empty beaches of the chilly North East,

KitchenDancefloor · 20/02/2020 09:22

My kids would be happy anywhere with a swimming pool and a buffet breakfast.

In fact, they'd probably choose the breakfast over the pool. They love the independence of being able choose whatever food they like in whatever quantity they want without us talking about the bill or healthy choices.

Four pain au chocolate for breakfast? Fill your boots son.

Hash browns and bacon for the third day in a row? Make the most of it daughter, it ain't happening at home!

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 20/02/2020 15:34

We like playing around in the pool together and eating a metric tonne of ice cream.

PashleyB · 20/02/2020 16:09

We live being outside when we go away - wearing the children out with a big dose of fresh air. I particularly love going to the seaside!

Pickofthepops · 20/02/2020 17:42

We love any aspect of a break away. With each of us at school, primary and secondary age children, mum and dad both teaching and supporting in schools, we feel the pace and heads often scrambled from term time pressure. A weekend to blow the cobwebs away would do the trick. Ideally somewhere close to the sea, to head onto the sand whether bright or breezy. We also relish time for R&R. Board games indoors, treasure trails, cosying up to watch a film. And good food is crucial. Above all, time for us, where we aren't following four separate timetables but one laid back chunk of time for us as a family.

Pickofthepops · 20/02/2020 17:43

PS forgot to say, something currently not offered by family hotels. We would love to do family karaoke. Just us, as I can't sing for toffee, but the kids are longing to give it a try. So I reckon a karaoke booth in a hotel would get our vote.

Beepbeepa · 20/02/2020 21:06

Something really energetic and ideally slightly muddy,a bike ride or walk. Picnic lunch possibly, mooch in some shops, then back for cake, splash in the pool and a great big dinner. Happy.

MissEliza · 20/02/2020 21:20

I love it when we are sitting in the hot tub together. We lead such busy lives, we're rarely altogether in the same room at one time, it's a real luxury to be all sitting together chatting. Another simple pleasure is at the end of a busy day sightseeing watching a family movie while we all lie in bed. However our favourite tradition is getting KFC when we arrive home to a cold house and empty fridge! I know the order off by heart!

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 21/02/2020 03:00

We live by the coast so while I love that I also love just being in the depths of the English countryside - the Cotswolds or Lake District, big open spaces the children can run for miles in, long walks and a local excellent pub. British family holidays are pure simplicity, moving our bodies, eating good food and drinking excellent gin and tonics, jumping in puddles or making the most of the sunshine, petting cows and making up ridiculous stories as we walk. We particularly love it if we come across rivers with a rope swing then bundling up together in a hotel (with someone else cooking dinner, cleaning up and making the bed!) after a soak in a big bath and watching a film or playing board games

We love our abroad holidays too but so much of those are spent immersing in as much culture as possible, when we holiday in the U.K. we kind of immerse just in each other

Virgoandleo · 21/02/2020 08:01

By the coast. Long leisurely walks along the beach and lots of sandcastles making.

StormDenise · 21/02/2020 08:08

As we live in a city we like to get away for stays on the coast or in the countryside so we can walk and explore.

Good food is a must (I like a break from cooking) so I like a good restaurant in the hotel or nearby.

Things to chill out and do together back at the hotel are important so board games, pool table, films on TV etc are very welcome- keeps the kids off their iPads!
