This sponsored discussion is now closed - thank you to everyone who shared their stories

It’s happened to all parents, you turn your back for all of three seconds and what you see on your return shocks you - it’s difficult to comprehend how your child made that much mess! Whether it’s Sudocrem, spaghetti or paint that they’ve managed to cover themselves in, the clean up is more manageable in the comfort of your own home. Baby wipes can be an essential when out and about, but with increasing awareness around their environmental impact, it can be easy to feel guilty about their use. With this in mind and following their launch of plastic free baby wipes Aqualettes, Nice n Clean would like to hear about the biggest mess your child has made while out and about.

Here’s what Nice ‘n Clean have to say: “Kind to little ones and even kinder to the planet. Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are truly environmentally friendly baby wipes. The wipes are plastic free and made from plant based, biodegradable fibres helping to ensure a brighter future for children everywhere. Super soft and gentle, each wipe cares for delicate, new skin using a natural pre-biotic to help protect baby’s skin whilst being pH skin neutral.

Not only are they loved by mums and dads nationwide, Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are dermatologically tested and paediatrician approved too. As a family business, we know how precious every baby is and how important their future is too. That’s why we’ve made our wipes from biodegradable fibres and our packaging recyclable*. We think looking after little ones and their planet is a big deal. If you think so too, find out more at aqualettes.co.uk. We’d love to hear from Mumsnetters about how they look after their babies' skin whilst they’re out and about.”

What was the biggest mess your child has ever made while out and about? How did you tackle the clean up? Do you have to approach the situation differently if you’re out of the house? Do you feel guilty about using baby wipes containing plastic?

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

On holiday two years ago at golden sands mablethorpe, easter time and it was raining most of the week. The grass areas were sludgy my daughter aged 2 at the time went running out of the caravan puddlesuit and wellys on straight into the sludge she had great fun but she looked like swampthings baby. That wasnt fun trying to get her in the caravan without coating it in mud.

Ds2 is constant mess. In the past few days he has
Liberated the spaghetti and distributed across the kitchen.
Painted all of the poster paint lids and while I confiscated them to wash, ate the paint.
Stirred the flower for some muffins rather too vigorously and covered himself and the floor.
Pulled down the shoe rack sending everything flying just as we were leaving the house.
Splashed so hard in muddy puddles even his shoulders were damp.
Spat medicine out so much he ended up with 2 pj tops in the wash.

There is more I am sure.

Poonami in the cafe in Morrisons. DS was about 4 months old, squiggling around on DH's lap opposite me. DH glanced down, looked blankly at a small damp patch on his thigh. Lifted the baby and poo poured down his leg, onto the floor. I had to wash most of the baby in the sink in the ladies, while DH tried to clean the floor and himself up.

DH has not learned his lesson and regularly takes both kids out with no change of nappies or clothes sigh.

When my eldest was 2, she was going through that stubborn tantrummy phase. Took her to Pizza Hut for lunch, got through the main tantrum free then thought I'd treat her to an ice cream. Handed it to her and she screamed 'NO' and promptly launched it off the table. It went everywhere! The poor man who happened to be passing our table got it all over his jeans. Offered him some wipes to clean up, and apologised profusely. I was mortified! Can laugh about it now though and it's become a bit of a running family joke. Whenever she has an ice cream we always ask if she's going to eat it or just throw it on the floor Grin

Ds2 got the lid of a tin of cornflower blue paint which I'd left by the front door.. He walked it all over the lawn and the gravel driveway... He then thoughtfully banged on the window to show me his handy work and I totally lost it.
My neighbour heard me shouting and came over... She calmly asked for my phone.. She rang her son who arrived within five minutes and pressure washed the whole lot away... He then put ds2 in his van and drove him round the village while I calmed down.
He arrived back and I sent neighbours son home with grateful thanks and a bottle of wine!

We stopped for a meal and they gave my daughter her food on a plastic plate. She tried to cut her chicken and the plate went flying. There was peas, carrots, potatoes, chicken and gravy everywhere. On the floor, on the table, on the chair and all over us as well.

My father in law bought my toddler some chocolate ice-cream whilst we were out celebrating my husband's 30th birthday. She got it EVERYWHERE. All over her beautiful new dress, his shirt, the table.. In her hair. It was sticky. Nightmare. she had fun though.

minkeymonkeys · 16/01/2020 08:23

When my wee one had just came out of nappies we were walking round the supermarket and I didn't realise she was peeing, dripping through the trolley all down the aisle to the till

AR2012 · 16/01/2020 08:31

little one had thrown up after having a bottle of milk. wet wipes helped immensely when access to toilets nearby was a bit far.

finleypop · 16/01/2020 08:43

Carrying my 2 year old son home, he was feeling unwell & threw up on me. In my hair & all the way down me. I was nearly home thankfully, so I got in the shower fully dressed

I didn’t even need to think about this one 😂
I took my dc for a winter’s walk around a nature reserve with his two cousins.
It was muddy in places and they were all warned to be careful.
Being boys they just couldn’t help themselves, they found a large muddy area and started skidding around.
Of course my dc slipped and fell in.
He was completely covered in mud and a bit upset !
The others just laughed.
The only way to take him home was to undress him down to his undies, wrap him in a blanket and put all the muddy clothes in a bag.
Fortunately we had the car !

I was eating some pesto on crackers and they just grabbed it and dropped it on the floor

NICH7 · 16/01/2020 09:04

In a birthday party, my daughter squeezed ketchup bottle and it went everywhere.

eloisemummy · 16/01/2020 09:15

Well we once went to KFC with the kids and my youngest decided it would be a good idea to rip up a load of napkins and leave them scattered all over the floor. It was a right mess and I was so embarrassed I had to clean it all up as all the other parents were looking at me. The other time at home she decided it would be a good idea to get mum's makeup out and put lipstick all over my walls then colour herself in with it, it looked like tribal war paint lol.

janeyf1 · 16/01/2020 09:28

When we went out for a family meal in a nice restaurant, our DC dropped some food on the floor then when trying to pick it up he managed to upend the table, sending our plates and food all over us and the floor! Very embarrassing

happysouls · 16/01/2020 09:38

You know when you're walking through farm fields in winter and around the gates and styles is just an endless sea of mud most of which is cow sht? When my son was about 4 we were faced with one of these and I told him to climb over and then stick to the tiny little bit of grass along the fence and NOT to go through the middle of it. So he went straight into this sea of mud (sht) and fell over completely. He wasn't happy. I wasn't happy. I didn't carry him home, he had to walk. Stripped off at the door and straight into the bath! Funny thing is that over 20 years later he still doesn't like being told what to do and I bet he'd do the same again haha!

southernsun · 16/01/2020 09:39

A leaking nappy just as we entered a car wash. Trying to sort out a baby and car seat covered in poo in a confined space while unable to open any windows to let the smell out.

mutleythegooner · 16/01/2020 09:40

The biggest mess my daughter made was when she got hold of a large sheet of polystyrene packaging and proceeded to destroy it into a snow storm of polystyrene crumbs that covered and clung to everything!!

MakeTeaNotWar · 16/01/2020 09:51

My son had a NOSE BLEED on a budget airplane.....mess everywhere! On the seats, down the aisle....and we were due to land so we had to go back to our seats with huge handfuls of paper towels to stem the mess

Marg2k8 · 16/01/2020 10:03

My DD was sick on the seat in Pizza Hut.

voyager50 · 16/01/2020 10:21

He fell over in a muddy field when we were out on a walk - he was covered in wet mud and was soaked though - I used wet wipes on his face and hands but then had to take him home for a bath!

icehousekerry · 16/01/2020 10:35

Potty training, potty training, potty training... I have been known to throw a pair of pants in the bathroom bin at a restaurant just to try and deal with the situation quickly - and yes, I do feel guilty using plasticy wipes!

gaptoothuk · 16/01/2020 10:44

Giving my 1 year old daughter a whole ice cream to herself when we went on holiday! It went absolutely everywhere, from her hair all the way down to her feet! Didnt help that it was especially windy that day too!

RACHELSMITH45 · 16/01/2020 10:45

Remember my little boy getting into a muddy mess at the park last Autumn. He loves nothing more than jumping in muddy puddles.. was covered from head to toe.. mud I don't mind but it got worse than mud.. at this particular park they have ponies and as they were walking in front of us, one pooped and guess who fell right onto all the poo..yes my boy! Good thing I had spares of everything on me haha

Sezza110 · 16/01/2020 10:46

Once less on a slide at the park, was so embarrassed.
