This sponsored discussion is now closed - thank you to everyone who shared their stories

It’s happened to all parents, you turn your back for all of three seconds and what you see on your return shocks you - it’s difficult to comprehend how your child made that much mess! Whether it’s Sudocrem, spaghetti or paint that they’ve managed to cover themselves in, the clean up is more manageable in the comfort of your own home. Baby wipes can be an essential when out and about, but with increasing awareness around their environmental impact, it can be easy to feel guilty about their use. With this in mind and following their launch of plastic free baby wipes Aqualettes, Nice n Clean would like to hear about the biggest mess your child has made while out and about.

Here’s what Nice ‘n Clean have to say: “Kind to little ones and even kinder to the planet. Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are truly environmentally friendly baby wipes. The wipes are plastic free and made from plant based, biodegradable fibres helping to ensure a brighter future for children everywhere. Super soft and gentle, each wipe cares for delicate, new skin using a natural pre-biotic to help protect baby’s skin whilst being pH skin neutral.

Not only are they loved by mums and dads nationwide, Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are dermatologically tested and paediatrician approved too. As a family business, we know how precious every baby is and how important their future is too. That’s why we’ve made our wipes from biodegradable fibres and our packaging recyclable*. We think looking after little ones and their planet is a big deal. If you think so too, find out more at aqualettes.co.uk. We’d love to hear from Mumsnetters about how they look after their babies' skin whilst they’re out and about.”

What was the biggest mess your child has ever made while out and about? How did you tackle the clean up? Do you have to approach the situation differently if you’re out of the house? Do you feel guilty about using baby wipes containing plastic?

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My little girl got into the baking cupboard and emptied an entire canister of cocoa powder all over herself, the kitchen, and the dog. Not fun to clean up- the dog still has a bit of a chocolate smell!

twinklenicci · 17/01/2020 09:57

we had a day trip to the beach , when i looked around my daughter had lied in a sea puddle fully clothed , we didn't have any spare clothes and had to go to find a local asda to buy her something to wear the rest of the day

Heronswood · 17/01/2020 10:27

Hugging the dog after she came out of the pond. Results were smelly and muddy! At least the baby wipes got our son's face, hands and legs hygienically clean.

kagglen · 17/01/2020 11:17

emptying the entire contents of my over stuffed handbag all over the floor

my DS was just 20 months old and we were out for dinner with my parents, we got though starters and mains with no issue but when they brought out desserts my mother thought it would be a good idea to let DS have the whipped cream from hers.
he brought his flat palm down on it with some force and it went everywhere! thankfully i always carry wipes and we manged to clean it up and the restaurant was very understanding

1.Cooked brussel sprouts down the back of the bureau (to avoid eating). The smell, the locating them etc.

  1. Foam on mirrors following a tantrum.
  1. "Pet" woodlice under the bed.
  1. Overflowing showers from teens.
  1. Following giving myself a wonderful treat of having cooker cleaned professionally, cooking bacon on wire tray, dripping grease all over cooker.
  1. Putting an aerosol in the log fire ... yes, luckily the glass doors already broken.
  1. Making cakes with friends in the kitchen ... flour, butter everywhere.

In my home the biggest mess was made with polystyrene.. kids found a piece from a flat pack and pulled it apart everywhere 🤦‍♀️

Dd was doing really well with toilet training but had a terrible accident in Tesco. I had to buy a whole new outfit. I do use wipes but not plastic ones as they are terrible for the planet. These ones sound perfect.

Lisapaige24 · 17/01/2020 15:07

My twin Boys decided to pour paint all over themselves at my friends house just before we were going to my friends DD’s christening (well to be fair she should of put the lids on properly) and walked it all through her house it’s fair to say she was not happy and I couldn’t go to the christening as I had to take my children home to be bathed and changed and I was supposed to be god mother as well she has still not gotten over that 10 years later

TellMeItsNotTrue · 17/01/2020 17:50

The Classic sudacrem mess, I just stood there open mouthed for a couple of minutes wondering where to start. DC was supposed to be asleep, and supposedly safe in cot 🙄 that was a great time to find out they'd worked out how to get out themselves 🤦‍♀️

Also vaseline - that was horrendous to try and wash off, he was slightly greasy for days!

phillie1 · 17/01/2020 18:18

Melted chocolate ice cream in Spain, luckily always had some wet wipes with us

Dangermouse80 · 17/01/2020 18:26

I think managing to have such an explosion that the pushchair was unusable on the walk home was my child's most mess created. It even impressively seeped through the seat onto the shopping underneath. It was a long walk home.

DS insisted on drawing weird shapes on his newly painted bedroom wall - in marker pen that will not disappear. I have tried the specialist paint for covering stains, etc. but these marks will not budge. So if you notice pictures hung up in odd places, that;s why...

Explosive diarrhea in the baby changing at Tesco (sorry Tesco cleaning staff!)

We had a very messy weekend this January.
My family are out and about on Saturday. Kids in their new coats from their Nanny.
My son runs over a muddy patch on the pathway and slips. The whole of his back was covered in thick mud!
Rough clean up with wipes until we got home.
Ventured out the next day and the poor boy did exactly the same thing again... It definitely was not his weekend! x

buckley1983 · 17/01/2020 22:44

My son & I went out for a walk - you know, one of those bracing, rosy-cheeked walks I see so many other families enjoying.. :)
My son was throwing a bit of a wobbler about something, I can't remember what.. but he started to storm off, slipped & ended up on his back in a puddle of mud. I tried to help him up, but was laughing so much I couldn't garner the strength to pull him up - he was sort of half-laughing/half-fuming (which just made it funnier!) & every time I lifted him, he kept slipping back down - the pair of us ended up laughing hysterically, absolutely covered in mud - but we did have the best walk ever!
A wet wipe certainly wouldn't have gone amiss though!

balletpanda · 17/01/2020 23:14

We moved into our house about three weeks before DD4 had a bug and walked past two loos while projectile vomiting multiple times to tell me she was being sick. My beautiful new home was absolutely covered in vomit, it was down the staircase, bannisters, my hall, stairs and landing carpet and even in the doormat which was especially grizzly as it's fixed on the floor so it took forever to clean. Honestly it haunted me for weeks Grin

MrRichTea · 17/01/2020 23:28

Grabbing ketchup bottle and squeezing it EVERYWHERE while out for lunch

cocochips · 17/01/2020 23:52

She did a horrendous poo and got it all over me and herself.

Laurajanew · 18/01/2020 08:41

We went for a family walk and my son landed in a puddle but fell in it he was soaked through to his pants and covered in pants. I do feel extremely guilty about using wipes whilst out and about. Thankfully we had a change of clothes in the car!

muppet1501 · 18/01/2020 08:56

We was on holiday and my then young son (he is 19 now!) said he didnt feel well so i sent him with my partner to the toilet. On returning he sat down and then projectile vomitted all over the club floor.Thankfully it missed everyone. Thats probably the worst tbh i am always very conscious when out and about

poorbuthappy · 18/01/2020 11:34

6pints of milk dropped in Sainsbury's. There's a photo somewhere....

MadCatLadypuss · 18/01/2020 11:58

My dd used to love splashing in muddy puddles. She would be soaked through but happy. One day on holiday, it rained heavily, there was a huge puddle. My dd jumped into the puddle without shoes on. She was soon joined by lots of other wet but happy kids!
