This sponsored discussion is now closed - thank you to everyone who shared their stories

It’s happened to all parents, you turn your back for all of three seconds and what you see on your return shocks you - it’s difficult to comprehend how your child made that much mess! Whether it’s Sudocrem, spaghetti or paint that they’ve managed to cover themselves in, the clean up is more manageable in the comfort of your own home. Baby wipes can be an essential when out and about, but with increasing awareness around their environmental impact, it can be easy to feel guilty about their use. With this in mind and following their launch of plastic free baby wipes Aqualettes, Nice n Clean would like to hear about the biggest mess your child has made while out and about.

Here’s what Nice ‘n Clean have to say: “Kind to little ones and even kinder to the planet. Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are truly environmentally friendly baby wipes. The wipes are plastic free and made from plant based, biodegradable fibres helping to ensure a brighter future for children everywhere. Super soft and gentle, each wipe cares for delicate, new skin using a natural pre-biotic to help protect baby’s skin whilst being pH skin neutral.

Not only are they loved by mums and dads nationwide, Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes are dermatologically tested and paediatrician approved too. As a family business, we know how precious every baby is and how important their future is too. That’s why we’ve made our wipes from biodegradable fibres and our packaging recyclable*. We think looking after little ones and their planet is a big deal. If you think so too, find out more at aqualettes.co.uk. We’d love to hear from Mumsnetters about how they look after their babies' skin whilst they’re out and about.”

What was the biggest mess your child has ever made while out and about? How did you tackle the clean up? Do you have to approach the situation differently if you’re out of the house? Do you feel guilty about using baby wipes containing plastic?

All who share their stories on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My husband had to bright idea to give our daughter a bag of cheesy wotsits in her pushchair whilst we were waiting outside the church for our friends wedding. I was busy helping friends so was gone for 10 mins when I came back she was completely orange all over! I was motified! I frantically cleaned her and the buggy with baby wipes as much as I could before the service. But safe to say the hubby was in the dog house for the afternoon! Her beautiful dress was ruined!

My daughter was sitting in the trolley at the checkout of a supermarket and as I was unloading the trolley she knocked a glass bottle of olive oil onto the floor which smashed everywhere, I was a bit shocked and looked in my bag for wipes or something to clean up with and as I turned around to move the trolley she threw down a jar of Mayonnaise to go with it, the staff were so kind about it even though I was mortified at being so silly to leave them so close to her.

As a new Mum took my baby girl to the doctor because she hadn't done a poo for about 5 days (little did I know this was perfectly normal)...all was fine and the doctor put my mind at rest, and then as we were preparing to leave the surgery she randomly vomited milk all over the reception floor....

Poor eldest son suddenly felt unwell and vomited all over the finely raked gravel in the manicured gardens of a stately home once. We were mortified and yes, baby wipes came out but a helpful member of staff reassured us that we were by no means the first to cause such chaos and helped us with such kindness.

First one . I had made a lasagne from scratch. Left a full bag of flour on the bench , went to the toilet for 2 mins max and my 2 and 3 year old managed to pour the entire bag all over my kitchen floor , and then make patterns in it .

Second one . My youngest was at nursery and my eldest had a day out together . We came back and I rushed in and put the cooker on , then dashed upstairs after a few minutes I could smell burning , so dashed back into the kitchen opened the oven and realised that my eldest child had put a Haribo box containing jigsaw pieces and dressing up hat in the oven , I think this had been done before we left the house ...
so I had to scrape melted plastic off my oven . The house stank of plastic . Checks the oven before turning it on.

Third one . So my child was potty training , so we had been out for the day and were walking through a housing estate to get to the bus , and she told me she needed a wee .. So I picked her up and dangled her over the grass . Completely forgetting that I had my handbag across me . Anyway she was pleased with herself and gave her a little clap for telling me she needed a wee. Got to the bus station , put my hand in my bag to get my purse out and soon realised that actually the bag must have swung under her and she had actually had poo in my handbag . My keys and purse and my hands are now covered in poo and there wasn't enough wet wipes to clean everything .

When I was shopping with my daughter and pushing my newborn son at the time. She decided it would be an excellent idea to kick the low jars of pasta sauce, unfortunately she had perfect aim that time and knocked half a shelf onto the floor, pasta sauce everywhere, got out some wet wipes, but wasn’t enough for the splatter, had to tell staff so they could corner it off and get the sharp glass cornered off. Was mortified.

my lil boy once opened a whole packet of sage and onion stuffing mix all over the floor in Tesco! I'd turned my back for 2 mins!! Rookie mistake! lol

My then toddler son, got down from the dinner table and shook his yoghurt everywhere, all over himself, carpet, walls. Messy and smelly.

For my baby boys first birthday I thought he could have his first taste of chocolate! We all went out for a family meal to pizza express. When dessert time came around I ordered him a slice of chocolate fudge cake, big boy size!
When it was brought out I told my family that he is allowed to enjoy his birthday gift however he chose! Well enjoy it he did! He didn’t mess up the restaurant but he sure made a mess of himself!! Luckily I ALWAYS carry wipes with me and it was easily sorted. It was the most fun I ever saw him have with food hahaha.

I used to take my daughter, now 8, to a baby massage class. The teacher liked the babies to be as naked as the day they were born. Need I say more?!

feeona123 · 26/01/2020 23:51

My daughter drew all over our oak table in felt tip! Luckily most of it came off with anti bac wipes!

My son drew all over his face and arms.....quite a lot as well!

Mine was just last week! I've just adopted a little boy and I decorated all my living room, I was so proud, I went for a bath and he was running around, I heard some noise but didn't think it was bad, but when I come down stairs, OMG he has ripped my wallpaper in big chunks and used a marker do do some A1 drawings!!!! X

Meal times are the worst, being in a cafe with messy food is a nightmare but I make sure to have lots of cloths and wipes. I just pray for no sickness as this has happened to a friend of mine in the middle of a local cafe on a busy day, I don;t think she's been back since!!

My grandson went to a friends' house + discovered the tin of white gloss paint. He proceeded to decorate himself AND their sofa!

We had an insane baby poonami on a train journey at the end of a long family holiday, we had minimal wipes left, the toilet was blocked and the child screamed blue murder throughout. Everyone else on the train clearly hated us for the smell/noise combo. It was pretty traumatizing for all involved!

Took my son aldi when he was in his terrible twos. I was pregnant and stopped a second to catch my breath. He ran off and I should have gone straight after him but I was a week away from my due date and did not have the energy. I slowly followed until I heard some commotion. He had squeezed out TWO bottles of bubble bath all spilt all over the floor! He stepped in it and ran spreading it even more. It was a disaster and I can't even imagine the cleanup process but luckily enough, the staff felt sorry for me after seeing my huge belly! It was so embarrassing!!
