This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Yesterday was lovely. Lazy Sundays are the best. Did some baking with DS in the afternoon, then played some video games together. Put the heating on and settled in for the evening, DS and DP watched football while i flitted in and out of the kitchen preparing dinner. We all ate toad in the hole during half time and then had a cuddle on the sofa for the second half. When the match was over we had pudding (cranberry, orange and apple lattice pie) and read a book before putting DS to bed.

We have a movie night every Friday with popcorn and ice cream! In the run up to Xmas we watch Xmas movies every weekend and we have a Christmas craft day and get family and friends over to make decorations and gives us all a chance to catch up

NellieRubina · 11/11/2019 13:39

Friday nights are my favourite, knowing that the weekend lies ahead. We are lucky enough to have a lovely cosy kitchen and quite often make pizzas with the kids after school on a Friday.

MilaRos · 11/11/2019 13:41

Favourite family moment.....Saturday movie night. We all take in turns to choose a film, snuggle up on the sofa and munch popcorn and sweeties. DC's LOVE it.

Moobirch · 11/11/2019 13:56

Every night before our daughter goes to sleep we sing twinkle twinkle little star and kiss her goodnight. If I cant make bedtime, I have to promise her I will give her a kiss goodnight when I get in. No matter what’s happened during the day, after this, I always feel happy, relaxed and contented with life.

jelleng · 11/11/2019 14:54

Very rarely my dad would make a traditional english breakfast, but he always managed to burn most of it, we would pretend to eat it but really we were stuffing it in our pockets to throw away later

amelia4levi · 11/11/2019 14:57

When my kids are kind together and helpful and kind :) we treasure all happy moments. especially seasonal moments

sarah861421 · 11/11/2019 15:01

ButterflyOfFreedom · 11/11/2019 15:24

Snuggling up on the sofa with my DC under a blanket watching Strictly!

Reading to them both at bedtime

Eating together around the table catching up on each other's day

Snuggling up in bed all 4 of us on a weekend!

Givealittlebit · 11/11/2019 15:37

My favourite thing is seeing my little one make dens and all manor of imaginary games up with my other half, using all the sofa cushions and blankets!

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 11/11/2019 16:38

When both DCs climb in our bed on Sunday mornings for cuddles. Generally they are both on form for stupid jokes and cuddles.

naomiakua · 11/11/2019 17:13

My little one was born in August so we're really excited about all the family traditions that will begin to unfold! Me and my husband have already decided we're going to make Boxing Day all about family games. We'll play lots of board games and work on a Christmassy jigsaw together in front of the fire!

Loreleigh · 11/11/2019 18:14

Family moments in the home to remember with fondness include the simple things like playing board games together and laughing the whole time. When the kids were small we used to play cards and games like Scrabble as the kids didn't realise just how much they were actually learning because they were having fun playing the games. Cards were a good way to learn recognition and strategy skills, basic maths, team work etc and Scrabble was brilliant for spelling (dictionary allowed) and expanding their vocabulary. Christmas fun was making things to hang on the tree - sometimes they made tasty treats or more traditional things but we also had an eclectic collection of things like sparkling unicorns, tiara-wearing dinosaurs, tutu-wearing female Santas, a variety of farmyard, zoo and jungle animals (some with painted stars). Praise was given even if giggles accompanied it - some of their surprise offerings were certainly surprises! Reading and stories were also an important part of sharing and it was kind of nice when the kids reached a time when they wanted to be the reader rather than just a listener. All sitting up to a dining table for meals, including Christmas dinners. Baking apple & blackberry pies or crumbles with fruits from the garden. I think it is those sort of memories that make the good bones of a family.

onemorecakeplease · 11/11/2019 18:43

I love all sitting around our massive kitchen table chatting and playing games with the fire on.
The dc have got really into cards this year so we have lots of laughs playing crazy 8s and rummy.

It's so cosy in the winter and I can be pottering in the kitchen while they play or draw at the table

Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them?the kitcehn for baking.the lounge for firs ttime disney viewings.or for building dens.or dragging all the duvets down at the weekend to the sofas.
With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family -decorating the tree. getting an IKEA gingerbread house to contruct together has been somethingwe have done throughout the family for decades years now!wrapping presents.watchign chrismtas tv.getting in lovely food.spending time together when we can.

Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?its about going through the radio times chrismtas special and circling which we want to watch!

Ikea1234 · 11/11/2019 20:02

We have lots of family traditions, all home based. Birthdays? Opening presents on mum and dad's bed in the morning. Christmas? Opening presents round the tree in the nor before having bacon sandwiches and home made bucks fizz in our pyjamas for breakfast. Weekends? Spending the day in our pyjamas on the sofa watching family movies - at this time of year it's Elf and National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 11/11/2019 20:12

When the DC were little I used to love making cakes and cookies with them in the kitchen.

At first , when they were really tiny, they'd have to stand on a dining chair to reach the work surface. As they grew they progressed to small wooden (Ikea) childs chair and then a low homemade step stool.

The baking would often involve some mishap like an egg rolling onto the floor or forgetting to put the sugar in the muffins but it was always fun and always involved the bit all children love....licking the bowl clean. I miss those chocolate cake mix covered happy little faces!

foxessocks · 11/11/2019 20:18

Snuggled up on the sofa with the kids, a cup of tea and something on TV that we all like, junior bake off at the moment!

PurpleGoose · 11/11/2019 20:23

My eldest's first Christmas: four generations, three branches of the families, all gathered together in our lounge diner. Good food, a roaring fire and lots of love and laughter.

mellicauli · 11/11/2019 20:23

Christmas Eve is a really manic round of cleaning and cooking before the family arrive. The Helpful Elf tradition involves the kids helping round the house doing easy tasks (folding laundry, putting pillows in pillowcases, making pigs in blankets, loading dishwasher). Helpful Elves usually do a lot of running up and down stairs and can request their choice of Christmas songs. They also get rewarded with an early present, hot chocolate and a movie.

oreomum · 11/11/2019 20:24

My kids are teens and I miss morning cuddles in bed. My dd will sit on the bed and chat with me about her life but they aren't interested in a nap next to me. (My bed is a Super King so plenty of room)

helly27 · 11/11/2019 20:39

Baking with the children I love it

maclinks · 11/11/2019 20:49

Has to be Christmas, every year they where in school when they broke up we would craft new Christmas decorations, every year we would save the best for the following year, so now they are older I have lots of hand made decorations my children have made over many years.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 11/11/2019 20:58

Kitchen disco, Friday night bouncing around on the rug to whatever tunes the kids request it’s what Alexa was made for!

TutsiFrutsi · 11/11/2019 20:59

I love the times when all the people and animals end up in our big bed. Especially poignant since my sister's terminal diagnosis.
