This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Playing family board games, especially at Christmas. Our favourites are scategories and Scrabble, always lots of good hearted banter and competitiveness.

Movie nights are brilliant as we all love them, take it in turns to pick the movie and the snacks, great fun and happy memories of some great nights

My favourite thing used to be snuggling in my armchair with my baby on my chest breathing in that gorgeous baby smell. I now love sitting on the living room floor letting my toddler guide our play with his imagination and him sitting on my knee reading books. The kitchen holds special memories of baking and cooking together.
We love dancing together to Christmas music and making Christmas cards together - especially with hand and footprints.

Movie night always

dadshere · 10/11/2019 17:23

We have family reading time together. All snuggled up in our chairs reading together, companionable silence!

Christmas Day, birthdays, Mother's Day, Fathers Day - we always have pancakes in bed. I can't remember why, but it's such a tradition and we always snuggle up together afterwards.
I've tried to shake it up a bit by having muffins sometimes or croissants, but I get told to to do it again. It's pancakes, end of!

My favourite moments are all Christmases we’ve spent eating and celebrating Smile

Poomami · 10/11/2019 18:00

Every so often I like taking the back cushions off the sofa and turning it into a day bed. We all get comfy with blankets and snuggle up with little one to read or just chat.

addverbaan · 10/11/2019 18:03

My eldest is a teen now, but we are both still Disney fans. At least once a week, we snuggle on the sofa together with a blanket and snacks to watch one of our favourite movies. It is such a lovely time and a great way to stay bonded

Pillowaddict · 10/11/2019 18:23

Our favourite time as a family is when we're together, snuggled on our couch, often pulled into a sofa bed, all reading books or watching a film with some snacks. Our lounge is our favourite family room, we even indoor camp in it and occasionally have family sleepovers.

I love sitting with DH, usually at the kitchen table, while our two DS run around together. It gives me that 'we've made it' feeling, seeing my boys play together happily just makes me feel so complete Grin

Lfoulds0209 · 10/11/2019 19:25

We have recently bought a new home and we love playing games as a family and doing arts and crafts together in the kitchen.

On a Christmas theme, I have always taken the family to the Christchurch Cathedral carol service and nine lessons on Christmas Eve which has become a tradition which signals that it is time to take a moment after all the preparations for Christmas before the day itself. As the children have got older they still want to observe this tradition, which is also true of the Yearly pantomime visit. It gives us all a warm Yule Tide glow.

LeeR1985 · 10/11/2019 19:36

We always watch home alone and rise of the guardians on christmas eve and christmas day :)

kittykomp · 10/11/2019 20:33

I like cosy nights in watching tv and snuggling up on the sofa

towser44 · 10/11/2019 21:09

Sunday afternoons when the weather is poor and we play Scrabble and Monopoly!

Getting back into bed as a family on a weekend morning; reading books under blankets on the sofa; candlelit dinners with DH while DC sleep.

ufopufop · 10/11/2019 23:44

Being all together for Xmas day, close family and extended family, remember why we are all together and enjoying each other company. hopefully for many more years to come.

My fav family moments in my home is the whole Christmas period. Everything about it makes the home so lovely and cosy. We buy our tree the last day of November so it is ready to be put up and decorated on December 1st. We have lots of throws scattered around the house so we can all get cosy. And we have grandparents round most weekends for special dinners my son helps
Prepare

This will be my DS4 last Christmas as a only child, so will be looking to make it extra special and make more lovely memories with him.

devito92 · 11/11/2019 08:22

Sleepycat91 · 11/11/2019 09:11

Our living room is the heart of our home, we snuggle on the sofa, read books, talk, celebrate our birthdays, cram all our family in and looking forward to bringing home our daughter in a few weeks and introducing her to our son and watching them bond x

southernsun · 11/11/2019 09:37

Pulling out the sofa bed in our snug, cuddling up on it with a movie (especially a Christmas one), mug of hot chocolate, some sweet treats and blankets
