This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Love watching rubbish on tv with my daughter, laughing & eating pizza, usually Thursday nights for this

misskatamari · 09/11/2019 09:43

I love it when the house is relatively tidy for the weekends, so I don't feel like I've got a million jobs to do, and we can have a chilled out time as a family. Maybe a walk or trip to the park if it's a clear day, and snuggle up with a film in the afternoon. We love playing board games as well and the kids are getting old enough to get involved, which is so much fun. Christmas wise this year, I'm looking forward to us all decorating the tree, and assembling our IKEA gingerbread houses, which is one of our Christmas traditions 😊

Creating a guinea pig olympics in the sitting room with the children (and the guinea pigs)! All being together is a shared activity that is fun, funny & free!

Friday night dinners in front of the TV. We have very large coffee table to accommodate all the food. I do big shopping on Friday and then cook up a feast. We might even have a dessert! We constantly keep pausing the film to speak about very loosely related stuff.
Second best is Christmas period. We have this tradition of lazing around and not leaving house from 24 December until New Year. It's so refreshing not doing anything and not feeling guilty about it. Visits and homework are done before or after. No shopping is done. No laundry. Nothing. It's very special, slow, kind of hygge.

My favourite family moments were and still are of us all round the piano - one of us playing and the rest singing - it all sounds bit old fashioned but we really enjoy it!

icehousekerry · 09/11/2019 10:03

My favourite family time is Sunday lunch - my husband makes a mean roast when my step kids are with us and we're all together. As the kids have got older we've been able to make the dining room a bit nicer so we can really set the scene for a long lazy afternoon together with after around the dining table.

Our TV isn't on much and when it is then it is something we have planned to watch as evening entertainment. We plan meals and snacks along with the viewing. When my son was young we had film nights like that but we also had nights where we'd all play board games which were good. No distractions, everyone focusing on the things we planned. Perfect!

Helsbells68 · 09/11/2019 10:14

Meal times when we are all together at the dinner table and can all talk to each other

deano777 · 09/11/2019 10:17

We used to play cards and dominos as a family on a Saturday night when I was little. I play them now with my kids.

LycanGav · 09/11/2019 10:17

Family meals. All sitting round the table chatting and laughing and eating and bonding. Can't beat it

Ruu · 09/11/2019 10:26

We created a really cosy and practical room that our two boys share and we hear them talking to one another before they fall asleep. Now the eldest wants more space so we took a trip to Ikea and designed their two separate bedrooms but with room for a sleepover at each others when they want it. They're both happy and excited!

My son has a kura bed and we have made a den underneath it. He has got comfy mats and pillows, pictures hung on the wall and a bookshelf under there. Every night before bed we snuggle in the den and read books.

MyNameIsJane · 09/11/2019 10:38

One of our favourite moments in our home has to be the time when our sofa was delivered (incidentally it was from IKEA) and DH & I hid in the box the next morning. We were in there for a good 20 minutes before they found us. Probably because they were hungry! Grin We had planned it the night before and rushed to get ready to hide as it was a school day!

winterpark · 09/11/2019 10:46

We do everything together, from decorating the house to making cakes, my children even "help" with the Xmas dinner. Then there's nothing better than at the end of an amazing day to snuggle up and watch a Xmas movie together.

lizd31 · 09/11/2019 10:50

I live 130 miles away from my family & can't travel on public transport due to my health & mobility problema so have to get a taxi each time I go which is very expensive so I only see them a few times a year so those times are precious. We all get together for a full day of fun & laughter & have a lovely family tea together

juju3 · 09/11/2019 10:56

When after hours of trying our darling gd finally falls off to sleep

Nomummyonlyzuul · 09/11/2019 11:10

My favourite moments in the home are ones like today, its freezing outside so oh, the kids and me are all snuggled up on our massive sofa(that we stupidly took from my parents when they moved house, it barely fits in our living room...) watching old films like mary poppins/chitty chitty bang bang and singing along badly! I love it because it reminds me of my own childhood doing exactly the same thing.
Another one would be snuggled up at bedtime reading stories, again something I remember very fondly, with my dad always doing silly voices for different characters. 6 year ds does this now too and it warms my heart so much. Sorry, gone all soppy now, I'll leave it at that! Blush

eloisemummy · 09/11/2019 11:11

We love Christmas eve family time, it's the best!! We each have our own personal Christmas eve box with fluffy pyjamas and some scrummy treats. We hop into our pjs and it's time for us all to snuggle up on the sofa to watch one of our favourite Christmas films whilst sipping hot chocolate with all the works! Then we put Santa and his reindeers treats out before going up to bed to read a Christmas story. It's all about the magic and the build up of excitement.

LaaMoii · 09/11/2019 11:14

Xmas time is always my favourite family moment because everyone just comes together to chill out, not think of work the next day, and have a good ol knees up!

PashleyB · 09/11/2019 11:17

I like pottering in the kitchen and the children sitting at the kitchen table engaged with doing some craft or similar and it is peaceful and everyone is getting along (for about 10 mins!)

amyhalliday1 · 09/11/2019 11:43

We love movie night - snuggles and films

Ehsangreat · 09/11/2019 11:46

Film night every Friday lights off nachos and cheese kids love it

sor5 · 09/11/2019 11:51

I adopted my three doggies around Christmas. One of them woke me up barking and then when I looked at her she hopped onto the bed and my heart just melted.

jacqui5366 · 09/11/2019 11:57

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home?

Christmas eve ! we always have Christmas PJ'S on from about 6pm, we have a chicken dipper tea and make treats for Santa.

How have these changed as your children have grown older?

I am slightly less manic now they are older, as I have sorted a hiding place for all the wrapped gifts to put in their santa sacks, they have smaller gifts nowaday - (wrapping a bike at 11pm is no joke)

Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them?

My dining room as we had he room decorated with lots and lots of lights, tinsel and the advent calendars.

With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

We always have an advent candle which we light every night and watch the Polar Express every Christmas Eve. I look forward to the build up to Christmas, and the big day itself.

Playing with my son in his room then snuggles and a book on sofa before bed.
