This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

it turns out we love board games- even though at least one person cries at least once during whatever the game happens to be. My son can't wait for the weekend so we all get to sit down together with one of his board games. They have also helped the kids with maths and reading skills too

As a working Mum enjoying quality time with DD sitting in a cuddle chair together initially reading to her, then DD reading to me once she was able to. A daily routine to look forward to.

My dc made water balloons with his best friend one day and when I looked out the window the garden was just a mass of popped balloons and the kitchen floor looked like a swimming pool, but they had fun and so I didn’t mind.
I also caught them doing gymnastics and somersaults on my bed, they were videoing themselves on their phone.
I wasn’t best pleased about my bed but the video is a classic to watch back now.
The best times together are the fun times, the times when there is laughter.

I love bath time with my kids! We have so much fun! The bathroom gets soaked, but who cares?

dannyelle · 09/11/2019 19:25

Staying up to countdown every New Year, and watching the fireworks dancing in the sky as we'd all cosy up and reflect on the year gone by.

lynsmagoo · 09/11/2019 19:32

putting the tree up on 1st december to michael buble xmas special, with a glass of wine and followed by mince pies, bath and a bedtime story.

sm2012 · 09/11/2019 19:36

I love snuggling up under a blanket with hot chocolate and reading lots of stories to my daughters, we especially like reading Christmas stories like Lucy and Tom's Christmas or Father Christmas needs a wee!

Stargirl84 · 09/11/2019 19:40

My favourite family moments have to be preparing for Christmas - getting a tree, re-arranging the furniture in the lounge to fit the tree in, decorating the lounge coffee table with cinnamon candles and clementine pot pouri, the children chasing each other round the tree...it’s such a special time of year, the run up to Christmas.

mave · 09/11/2019 19:49

I love stories and lots of hugs and kisses from my children!

Hannahscuff · 09/11/2019 20:00

Last year was the first Christmas me and my partner had in our own home - just being able to decorate it and spend time together was special and knowing there were many more years of memories to make

ecomousey · 09/11/2019 20:13

My favourite family time in the home is called 'Light The Candle'.
During Advent, each evening we light our Advent Candle, sing a special song, and read a Christmassy story while it burns down for that day.

Lydiag1 · 09/11/2019 20:18

With the festive season upon us we love snuggling in our dressing gowns watching Christmas movies it’s the perfect time of year to cherish precious family time with the fire going and some lovely home baked Christmas biscuits

lots of happy times and memories, I have been thinking about this recently as we will probably be moving in the new year. We like to have a family games night in our living room, playing cards and board games

Minnibix · 09/11/2019 20:25

Its our family tradition to put the Christmas tree up on the 1st Dec then we all sit around admiring it whilst eating mince pies and drinking hot chocolate : D : D : D

Mealtimes - they always descend into fits of giggles

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 09/11/2019 20:46

At this time of year, it's mainly about comfort. We've some lovely soft blankets on the sofa, on Fridays the children like to have snacks on the sofa with a film. We've some great trays with built in handles which make it easy for little ones to carry trays safely. They like to "build a nest" by getting the blankets and cushions in the best positions for their comfort.
I enjoy bedtime, my son likes to read in bed and has a couple of lights from Ikea which clip onto his bed, and he can angle them just right. I've a comfortable seat beside his bed. I find it's often this time when he tells me all the little details of his day.
I enjoy playing with the children and find this is another time when their ideas, hopes and fears are easily discussed. We have lots of Lego here - I'm awaiting the new range that Ikea and Lego are collaborating on- in the meantime we've prioritised the furniture around having space to build, store and play with Lego, playmobil etc.
We have a dedicated games table in the living room - it's always available for a board game or a jigsaw etc. We used to use the dining table for games, but now that we're not interrupted by having to put games away for meals, it actually means we play games together more. Thinking about it, the best moments are when we're doing simple things together. It could be getting packed lunches ready, reading together, or playing. It's just about being together isn't it?

mummyuk86 · 09/11/2019 21:02

My favourite family moment is our family tradition of reading 'Twas the night before Christmas' every Christmas Eve before bed. It's truly magical!

NICH7 · 09/11/2019 21:04

We occasionally sat around the dinner table after dinner, just discuss various things from kids’ schools days to politics. It goes on and on and something we all enjoy.

Dencop · 09/11/2019 21:12

Any family time is special, especially those little totally unexpected moments where one of my DC just gives a cuddle, or says 'love you'. Cuddles on the sofa watching films and Christmas morning has a feeling all of it's own - wish I could bottle it.

moosexxx · 09/11/2019 21:38

I think ours have taken place around the kitchen table. Mealtimes are great for catching up, discussing the day, and having a laugh.

annarack99 · 09/11/2019 21:52

Sharing Sunday lunch at the dinner table in our dining room. Chance to talk and enjoy homemade food together.

hmariez · 09/11/2019 21:53

Cuddling and reading stories xx

stimpy1 · 09/11/2019 21:56

I love it when all the family from 3 generations are around the table playing a game and laughing until it hurts!!!

Bigboytyson · 09/11/2019 22:00

Having Christmas Dinner together around the table and raising a glass to our loved ones who are no longer with us and watching our daughter playing with her presents

Mossiebonbon · 09/11/2019 22:01
