This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Favourite times are Sunday afternoons. After Sunday lunch we go for a walk with the dog (weather permitting) then come back and play games until tea time. Monopoly is one of our favourites but we have several that we love. For us Christmas begins when we choose our Christmas tree and at least one carol service is attended.

My favourite thing is skypeing my mum and sister with my daughters. We only see each other twice a year but it's really important to have a close relationship despite the distance.
We all sit down and have a good old chinwag 😁

Flapdoodles · 12/11/2019 21:14

At Christmas after we have all put up the tree, we make Christmas cards for family and friends and bake mince pies. The Christmas holidays are my favourite too, we don't seem to be rushing around as much - just at home, playing with gifts and lots of family time playing board games and watching movies.

We have a playroom which we put lots of Ikea storage units in and keep all the DCs games and toys in there - buying the storage was the best thing we ever bought as even though no they are both into gaming, as everything is tidy we have kept all their games which always get played with in the Christmas holidays.

one of my childrens favourite things that just sort of happened and is a bit of a tradition is making pancakes and putiing in any fillings that are around.

WilmaJean · 13/11/2019 07:26

The bedtime story with my two year old! He's all snuggled up (in his Ikea bed!) and he loves listening to the story (and throwing his cuddly toys out of the bed at the same time for me to repeatedly pick upConfused) ... but he does look super cute!

Game night is one of my favorite's.
TV & phones go off. We grab the bean bags / cushions & all gather round the table to play whatever is chosen that week.
Whoever wins get's to choose the following week's game.
Just brilliant being together with no distractions.

sweir1 · 13/11/2019 09:25

We love the winter nights when we can stay in and play games in front of the fire.

littlemonkeyz · 13/11/2019 10:46

Our favourite family moments are usually on a sunday afternoon in the winter when the fire is on, we are snuggled up with blankets and we are watching an old favourite family film.

biffyboom · 13/11/2019 14:21

My favourite moments are when my 2 children are playing together nicely and I don't feel like a referee in a wrestling match.

SillyMoomin · 13/11/2019 14:39

When my children were younger, they would sit on a little wooden chair, child size, in the kitchen next to the washing machine as I pottered around making dinner.
When they were teenagers, they hoisted themselves onto the work surfaces and lounged around on there to chat to me.
Now when they come to visit as adults, they pull out a chair, and sit at the kitchen table. But it's always been centred around the kitchen, chatting, catching up and baking

Liquorice13 · 13/11/2019 14:40

Saturday night is family night - we sit in the kitchen playing a board game while hubby makes pizzas and then we make popcorn and take it in the living room to snuggle up on the sofa to watch a movie

We have a record of DD's height over the years on the side of her (Pax!) wardrobe, and this is now one of my favourite spots in the house.

Christmas Eve has always been the most magical day for me and it remains so. I love spending time with my nephew and nieces making memories and hopefully traditions that meant a lot to my siblings and I as children, will continue with the next generation. With each of my nephew and nieces, I take my ambition of being THE best auntie in the world, very seriously, so I plan my Christmas campaign throughout the year!

I like doing crafts and whilst the other adults are wrapping pressies, I help the little ones make Christmas cards and hand stamped wrapping paper using hands, toes and the odd potato. Peppermint creams and gingerbread polar bears, snowmen and Christmas bauble shapes are fun to make and the adults then have the 'joy' of eating those little silver balls used for decorating cakes, without breaking a tooth!

I ALWAYS do a Ms. Ben and dress up. It is not me dressed up, I become that character. My elf from a few years ago remains legendary!

The best bit is of course the pressies. On Christmas Eve, we all watch The Snowman and The Snowman and the Snow Dog. I always howl at the end. He dies! sob

I give them all the silliest Christmas decoration I can find and Christmas Day is where I have the most fun. I mocked up a present of a parachute jump for my mum a few years ago. She was absolutely horrified, but it was so funny.

Christmas is when the rules go out the window and my 40 something siblings all end up arguing and revert into 6 year olds. It's hilarious seeing them argue about who has to sit in the back of the car and watching them eating chocolate oranges for breakfast, whilst insisting that their children eat Weetabix! We all live miles from one another, so this is the only time we tend to all be together. I really can't wait for Christmas. I love every second of it.

ponygirlcurtis · 13/11/2019 18:31

Sitting playing Minecraft with my DS, we can fight monsters together and he can 'teach' me what to do because I am a novice and we build houses and go adventuring. And when older DS13 joins in too it's even better! It's something we can all do together.

Anj123 · 13/11/2019 20:05

Every Christmas we watch Elf snuggled up on the sofa which I bought from Ikea long before my daughter came along!

PinkToaster · 13/11/2019 20:16

Dancing in the kitchen, music up loud, with my children smiling and laughing Smile (happens to be an IKEA kitchen!)

ISawyouinTescoyesterday · 13/11/2019 20:28

We love watching the simpsons over dinner. No on on their phone. It's bliss Grin

toasterstrudle · 13/11/2019 20:30

Reading books in bed with my children (an IKEA bed!).

Having a teddy bears' picnic in the middle of the living room

Baking and decorating cupcakes in the kitchen

Christmas-wise, I love decorating the house and tree on December 1st. As a family we would all come home and have mulled cider with the Christmas music playing in the background while we did the decorating. I hope to do the same with my children as they get a bit older.

Hev33 · 13/11/2019 20:47

My favourite moment is when i get up for work at 5:30 am, i can have a coffee and shower in peace, no interruptions x

Danascully2 · 13/11/2019 20:52

I like bath time - kids love their bath and now they're older they sometimes play really nicely together and I love hearing them giggle. I also love seeing them all cosy in their beds - older one has the IKEA kids bed that turns upside down - can't remember it's name but has worked really well for us. Also love cooking with kids on their IKEA stools....

HalfBrick · 13/11/2019 20:58

Our kitchen is where it's at, drawing, eating, playing, soldering sewing, you name it we've done it on our 15 year old pock marked IKEA table 😁. My favourite Christmas tradition is cracking open the Baileys and a tin of chocolates on Dec 1st and toasting the season. Then hanging up all my tacky decorations on the kitchen ceiling, whilst stood on said table!

bottlenose301 · 13/11/2019 21:16

Aw my favourite moments is when DD and I snuggle up and watch a film together. Or even when she just 'hangs' out in my room with me, just chilling together makes me happy :)

clairemarthaw · 13/11/2019 22:05

Time around the dinner table where we all eat together and share what we've been up to. Either that or snuggling up and reading stories in bed together.

becks213 · 14/11/2019 00:51

I love Saturday Evenings when we are all at home together at the same time enjoying each others company in our living room, especially at this time of year when it's cold outside and there's nowhere I'd rather be than at home with the family

littlebillie · 14/11/2019 05:45

Family games on the kitchen table, where we can get together and have a laugh.
