This activity has now closed

From snuggling on the sofa and watching a film, to reading your child a book before they go to bed, the home captures hundreds of small moments in day-to-day life that often bring a lot of joy. With the Christmas season coming up, it’s these kinds of moments that play an important part in the festivities, whether it be making mince pies in the kitchen, or ceremoniously putting the star on top of the tree. With this in mind, IKEA want to hear your favourite family moments in the home, and what makes them special.

Here’s what IKEA have to say:
“Incorporating playful elements into any room creates an inviting space for a whole host of indoor activities. Whether you’re a kid – or a kid at heart – it’s easy to turn your living room into a place for lighthearted fun! Whatever space you have to play with, planning a space where children are free to express themselves boosts their confidence.
Read your favourite book on the sofa, while the rest of the group turns dining room chairs into a game of musical chairs. Or, turn display cushions into an impromptu pillow fight. Simply add matching seating for kids and adults, then the little ones get to imitate grown-ups. Role play is great for developing their social skills. Who wouldn’t feel twenty years older sitting enjoying a cup of tea in a POÄNG chair?”

What are or have been some of your favourite family moments in the home? How have these changed as your children have grown older? Which rooms in your house remind you of the fond memories you’ve created in them? With the winter months closing in, which Christmas traditions in the home do you do as a family - and which are you most looking forward to? Perhaps you have a favourite festive film you watch every year without fail?

However big or small, share your favourite family moments in the home with IKEA on the thread below, and you will be entered into a prize draw where 1 MNer will win a £300 IKEA voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

We love making gingerbread from scratch. Sometimes we try and make a traditional house, other times we end up with a multi part Christmas dinosaur 🦖

clutchingon · 14/11/2019 09:09

Love lighting the fire and all snuggling down with loads of soft blankets to watch a movie with hot chocolate and popcorn. Feels like such a treat.

Chaosonthehorizon · 14/11/2019 09:36

Decorating with Christmas with all the family including my parents and sister. Family meals sitting around the table sharing news about what we have done during the day. Sitting reading stories at the end of the day is my favourite time and I also love listening to my husband or other members of the family reading to our little people.
We are adding to our brood so a voucher would be very welcome.

I love baking with my kids. Love adapting the recipe and eating bit before we shouldn't. Feels like we're all kids again. Even better at Christmas when we have to make the truffles again because we accidentally ate the first lot!

TellMeItsNotTrue · 14/11/2019 15:16

I really enjoy story time before bed, we all love books and it's just quiet quality time together to end the day with

emmmaaa26 · 14/11/2019 15:43

I love Sunday dinner around the table. We top the weekend off with a full blown dinner and some good conversation.

JulesJules · 14/11/2019 17:03

Our Christmas tree doesn't go up until about a week before Christmas - my birthday is around then and we often do it on my birthday or the weekend before. We always have a real one, (love the way you can smell it all over the house) We put on Christmas music and throw everything on the tree, loads of different lights and decorations going back to ones the children made in nursery. It's definitely not themed!

Making up songs with my kids and partner. My daughter is autistic so she responds well and communicates better through song. Singing in public..well as you can imagine the funny looks we get but thats life!

mumof2masterofnone · 14/11/2019 19:42

Rainy days in the autumn and winter with all of us at home together.
Cosy blankets and a good old Christmas film like home alone or elf on the TV while the children play.
The smell of a roast dinner in the back ground is always a winner too! Grin

Elliebobtail · 14/11/2019 23:14

With my one. Daughter it’s baking, it makes her so happy!
With the other one we cuddle under a blanket and watch films :)

123bananas · 14/11/2019 23:22

I like playing board games with the whole family (even dbrother who always cheats Wink) and time spent in the kitchen preparing food together whilst listening to festive songs and singing along badly (especially DH and his funny reggae versions of Christmas Carols).

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 15/11/2019 00:15

Making an ikea gingerbread house
Watching Elf
Having hot choc with mini marshmallows
Counting down advent by gluing a cotton wool bud onto Santa's beard
Choosing a new bauble per child each year - they get to take their 18 baubles with them if when they leave home if not broken

I grew up in Europe and when we moved to our new house we went to the local Ikea and stocked up. I got an amazing bath sheet towel that stayed with me until university - it was soft and durable and a fab, brilliant red! My mum used to wrap me in it when I got out of the bath and it was like being cocooned!

Now I'm all grown up and live back in the UK and I have a family of my own. We still have Ikea towels cos they're good value but also properly big! I love wrapping my son in his bath sheet when he gets out of the shower and giving him a hug. He's getting to the age where cuddles are rarer, so that moment is all the more special. We probably have something from Ikea in every room in the house, so it seems odd that I've chosen our bathroom of all places for my special moment, but that short hug for me really links my past and my present, and makes me feel so grateful for my lovely family.

thefirsttimer · 15/11/2019 02:04

Snuggling in bed on a Sunday morning with DH and DS reading books and watching Netflix or Cbeebies.

lostinlego · 15/11/2019 10:39

Our favourite traditions include each year shopping for one truely tacky decoration to put on the tree, filling the kids advent calanders with random stuff each year. Also jut getting together with family each year as we all live all over the place.

Teatowelfairy · 15/11/2019 11:18

One of my favourite things to do was when the DC where very small....we moved into a old house with no heating. Didn't have any for a few years. In the winter it would be bloody freezing. DH would take the DC's duvets and any spare blankets, pile them on top of our bed, then we'd all snuggle in together. Mainly for warmth, but we also had lots of fun and some lovely snuggles.

Bellroyd · 15/11/2019 11:40

Just having the whole family together in one room. We all live some distance each from the other, so this is a rare treat indeed

wooohooo · 15/11/2019 12:26

I cook Sunday dinner for 15 every Sunday, this Christmas I have 20 so far coming, more to follow too

StickChildNumberTwo · 15/11/2019 14:38

Most of my favourite moments centre round stories, snuggling up on the sofa or in bed, or nowadays my daughter reading to her little brother.

BrieAndChilli · 15/11/2019 14:47

I love family movie time. we have a big squishy corner sofa and all lounge on it watching a film and eating chocolate.

Mickhasnotorso · 15/11/2019 17:01

I really love putting Xmas music channels on and dancing around the lounge with my boys

bluejem12 · 15/11/2019 17:15

Hands down, Xmas! Its always brings the best family moments for me, and the worst!!!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 15/11/2019 19:04

We have so many little traditions this time of year. We have a road we like to drive down where the leaves are so beautiful in autumn, and we pick the weekend carefully to see them at their best! We make a jar full of autumn treasures, start putting up fairy lights, and keep a box of blankets in the living room. We always count down to Xmas from about 80 days! It’s just the best time of year.

sootyo · 15/11/2019 21:29

Reading a book together
