This activity is now closed

Everyone needs a little boost now and then. We all have those frantically busy days - whether at work, at home taking care of the kids or just rushing around trying to keep all those proverbial plates spinning – and it’s easy to forget how to keep yourself well nourished and energised. Not only can making better nutritional choices help keep you energised, but also little emotional boosts such as listening to your favourite song can also have a huge effect on how we handle life’s demands and whatever the day throws at us! With that in mind Nairn’s would really like to know what gives you an energy boost?

Here’s what Nairn’s have to say: “Nairn’s are all about ‘grabbing life by the oats’ and over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you some exclusive, energising tips - we’d like to think it’s a pretty good fit considering just how naturally energising oats can be for you. You’ll find interviews with our inspiring and energetic ambassadors, expert advice from our resident nutritional therapist and loads more over on our website.

So, if you’ve got a go-to snack or energising habit that you swear by to keep you up and running, why not share it with the community? You could be lucky enough to win a hamper of incredible goodies from Nairn’s and friends, worth £150!”

What part of the day are you most likely to feel the need for an energy boost? What are the danger signs that your child’s energy is flagging? What foods or snacks do you give them to stop them getting ‘hangry’?! Do you get an energy boost from having a bit of family time? Maybe you get a boost from listening to your favourite playlist on your way to work? Would you say that exercise is what helps give you a boost? And if so what snacks do you eat to make sure you keep your energy going after exercise? What are your favourite breakfasts and lunches that help keep you going for the day? And what foods do you avoid that make you ‘crash’? How do you incorporate oats into your diet?

Whatever gives you an energy boost, share them on the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a Nairn’s hamper worth £150 and one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

An upbeat pop song and a brisk walk

O.A.T.S:

O-Oats in the morning,
A-Activity in the afternoon,
T-Time to myself, and
S-Singing along to my favourite tracks.

Eggs! I love a poached or hard boiled egg with anything to give me a boost.

lillypopdaisyduke · 14/05/2019 11:26

I usually feed 'hangry' mid morning and around 4 pm - even though I have overnight oats for breakfast. I banana usually gives me the boost I need, and this works for the children too (cut up or mashed into some fromage frais). We love apple and pear crumble made with bashing up some oatcakes ! A great dessert and we love the bashing bit !

Exercising gives me an energy boost, as well as staying away from chocolate!

The afternoon slump is real! I find after lunch is when my energy can take a dip. The things which work for me:

Start the day with a bowl of gluten free oats with syrup and cinnamon.Gives me energy for hours.
A walk or even having a conversation with someone can lift my energy.
A banana or coconut energy ball with a green tea or good old water.
Listening to a good tune is great especially if its upbeat!
I do yoga from time to time and I find that after a good (2 hour) class focusing on postures and breathing, my energy levels are definitely boosted - considering I tend to go in the evenings I think this is testament to how great yoga is for overall energy levels.

I can always tell when my children's energy is flagging as they get more fidgety, less focused and a bit picky. As well as water, I tend to give them fruit, raisins, boiled eggs or cheese as snacks. They also like chopped avocado mixed with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a pinch of salt.

Avoiding bread or heavy carbs during the day tends to help avoid the energy dip. I do feel a little tired after eating bread or pasta.

I definitely flag around mid afternoon so love a piece of fruit and a biscuit to get me through till tea time

StickChildNumberTwo · 14/05/2019 15:47

I try and avoid snacking because I inevitably reach for the chocolate.... The kids on the other hand get given fruit, cereal or similar - I'm better at being healthy on their behalf than my own!

If I'm slumped at my desk I tend to try and get out for a walk to kickstart me back into productivity.

purpleclaire · 14/05/2019 16:28

A brisk walk for about 30 minutes does it for me.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/05/2019 18:34

I'm really disappointed they use palm oil.

Come on, Nairn's get rid of it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/05/2019 18:36

To answer your question, I bake my own, without palm oil.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 14/05/2019 19:43

We all seem to need a little snack around 3:30/4pm. I usually bring bananas, apples, oatcakes or popcorn to the park after school. DH loves an oatcake with peanut butter and banana as soon as he comes in the door after work.

PracticallySpeaking · 14/05/2019 19:46

Anything with sugar in it, ginger with orange juice, coffee, exercise, taking a walking, taking a nap, cleaning (bizarrely)

starray · 14/05/2019 20:28

I get very sleepy in the afternoon so for a quick energy boost, I have a banana or put grated or sliced cheese on nairns oatcakes, microwave for 15 seconds - and I have a delicious snack!

I try to avoid pasta, potatoes or rice in the afternoons as it definitely causes a dip in my energy levels. I get an energy mood-lifting boost from listening to music, but I get a bigger boost from playing on the piano as it engages my mind.

CMOTDibbler · 14/05/2019 21:59

Getting out in the fresh air for some exercise, and ideally going open water swimming just gives me so much energy. Before going I'm often all meh, can't be bothered wriggling into my wetsuit, but afterwards I'm just buzzing!

llamawearingasombrero · 14/05/2019 23:38

Asda oatcakes cost about 85p per box. Dd2 loves them because 'cake'

Snufflepiglet · 15/05/2019 03:44

I really really loved Nairns dark chocolate chip oat biscuits with a cup of tea for the mid afternoon slump 😋 I love that they come in little snack sized packets which helps me not to gorge on the whole lot!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 15/05/2019 06:40

Porridge - gets me energised every morning

Joannemcdonald17 · 15/05/2019 06:59

A green tea

renas · 15/05/2019 07:00

I always have a banana or some kind of fruit at 11am and 4pm

dogdog · 15/05/2019 07:03

Oatcakes with honey and green tea with ginger.

ricola1 · 15/05/2019 07:15

My kids making a mess makes me jump to attention and gives me energy to stop them!

youkiddingme · 15/05/2019 07:25

I go for Nairn's glutenfree wholegrain crackers dipped in hummus.

cag2712 · 15/05/2019 07:25

A good work out at the gym sets me up for a full day working hard

maryandbuzz1 · 15/05/2019 07:28

Mid morning and mid afternoon are the times when I’m in need of an energy boost. My go to snack is always a cuppa and a digestive biscuit.
