NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

I was the queen at skipping! There were a lot of tears before I nailed it but I got there in the end!

Sunlight33 · 22/01/2019 17:21

Hopscotch & Dodgeball were by fav at school.

mamof3boys · 22/01/2019 18:12

It has to be skip-rope. I just wish I could remember how to do it now!

phillie1 · 22/01/2019 18:18

Jacks - kept us occupied for hours

KittensAndCake · 22/01/2019 18:45

as the school playground consisted of small stones and gravel, his knees still bear the scars.

Yes I remember getting the little bits of gravel stuck in your knees, I still have the scars too 😁

We loved playing British bulldogs at school

Cailin7 · 22/01/2019 19:52

Elastics, skipping ropes, two balls - we played these games every playtime and made up our own songs

AndreaF13 · 22/01/2019 20:02

We played skipping, elastics and made up a lot of our own games.

sarah861421 · 22/01/2019 20:11

climbing, I would climb trees, walls, and climbing frames, whatever I could, wherever. It was by far my favourite but I was absolutely lousy at it

I used to love 'the parachute' where you had to run underneath it as people stood in a circle waving it up and down! We loved playing ;'British bulldog' which apparently isn't allowed it schools anymore, where you had to run from one side of an area to another without being caught

Nicole1709 · 22/01/2019 20:43

I loved playing with my hula hoop or playing 'kiss chase'!

jandoc · 22/01/2019 20:50

anything to do with ropes was fabulous

Blainalass · 22/01/2019 21:08

All kinds of chasing games, British bulldog, hide and seek. There were passing phases on the latest in-thing - new skipping games, French elastic things, hula hoops, and so on.

cinabar · 22/01/2019 21:11

We used to play a game called NakeyNakey123. Everybody started on a base and one person counted to 20, everyone else ran and hid, the goal of the game was to stay out of sight but make it back to the base without being tagged. If you were caught you joined the search for others.

BikeRunSki · 22/01/2019 21:24

Sneaking into the other playground!! (Infants and juniors were in different playgrounds)

Haffdonga · 22/01/2019 21:34

Loads of make believe fantasy games (escaped orphans was a favourite) Bulldog, Kiss Chase and Knicker Chase (boy catches girl - girl shows boy her knickers). This was the 70s and safeguarding hadn't been invented.

My dss only ever seemed to play football and re-enacting computer games.

EmNix · 22/01/2019 22:04

Skipping and HOp Scotch
Whats the Time Mr Wolf
jingle Jangle (Elastics)
Lots of fresh air .. whatever the weather!

AngelDog · 22/01/2019 22:11

When I was in what's now Year 4, my best friend and I decided we wanted to play football. Only boys played football, and they wouldn't let us join in. So one of us would pick one team, and the other the other team, and we'd just start playing - tackling the boys etc. After a while the boys got fed up with us 'interrupting' their game and just let us be one of the normal players. It was a lot more fun than the cheerleading which the girls had done (for the boys' football matches)!

We also did lots of skipping games, clapping games and 'Bay-in', which was a cross between Tig and Hide & Seek.

Whyisitsodifficult · 22/01/2019 22:20

British Bulldog, hopscotch all the classics which are probably banned today!

ceejayen · 22/01/2019 23:02

Elastics. I had forgotten all about this until others commented. I can now remember the good fun we had jumping in and out and trying not to get tangled up.

sunshinewey · 23/01/2019 00:36

Well, I didnt have a pushbike or anything posh like that, so we used our imaginations, making dens, playing hopscotch on a chalk made out pavement, we would use long lengths of elastic and sing and skip inbetween, I think its called Double Dutch, I always had a stick in my hand, and of course the park, hanging out after school in the local parks, those were the days !

quizqueen · 23/01/2019 02:24

One of my favourite games was 'Kick the Can' which was a variation on 'it or tag'. Someone was 'on' i.e. the chaser and everyone else ran off. If you were caught, you stood by the can. People could be released by someone kicking the can. I also liked Cats Cradle which we played around our hands or sometimes around a pair of children's feet!

KellyW88 · 23/01/2019 04:06

What time is it Mr. Wolf and Bulldog were favourites for me. That and playing pretend with friends - like Power Rangers or X-Men :D

roverschick · 23/01/2019 06:27

We used to play tig but our favourite was Red Rover!
