NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

"Pegs" was a big favourite at our school. You lean two sticks about 4 inches long (like old style wooden pegs) against a wall with a third stick across the top of them. Team A takes turns to throw a tennis ball from 6 - 8 feet away trying to knock them down. Team B gets a thrower out if they catch the ball directly off the wall, and team A loses if all their throwers are caught (ie. floor-wall-catch=out; wall-floor-catch=not out). If team A knocks the sticks down they then have to try and rebuild the sticks against the wall whilst team B tries to tag team A members with the ball thus eliminating that team member from the game. You can tag by touching someone with the ball in-hand or by throwing the ball at them. Team A wins if the sticks are rebuilt, and team B wins if they tag all team A's players.

as a kid we used to play hop scotch, leap frog and different skipping games! It's a shame kids dont really play games like that now x

ashde · 21/01/2019 23:09

Hopscotch and skipping in my school was very popular.

lhlee62 · 21/01/2019 23:13

What's the time Mr Wolf we played, I've shown the kids and they love it too. It also showed my daughters how to count so win win game

pinkjjf27 · 21/01/2019 23:46

i love skipping, mr wolf, clapping, cheerleading games, two balland tag, hopscotch and , elastics. you never saw an over weight child in my school

lchuffam · 22/01/2019 06:19

Clapping games, and French skipping

DinkyDaisy · 22/01/2019 06:36

The big ship sailed on the Ally ally oh...
It seemed to involve our whole primary, holding hands in a long line and going through an arch made by a child holding their hand against the wall. I am the wrong side of 50!

Bonkers with balls on a string. This was banned after injuries. British Bulldog. Oh my poor skidded on knees! Again involved the whole school and occasionally banned.

Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and thro. Can you throw them o'er your shoulder like a regimental soldier...Well the big boys gave that new words!

80sbabi07 · 22/01/2019 06:36

I loved all sorts of playground games, British bulldog, What time is it Mr Fox/ Wolf, skipping and elastics ( a long piece of elastic tied- one person at either end it would start with so many fingers opening up the band for you to skip in and out of and then, bit by bit reduce to one finger lol) Dizzy dollies where you span round and round, the last one standing was the winner - always played after dinnertime for some reason ( I had cruel peers lol) We also used to see who could 'take off'- in high winds you would whip your coat back like a sail and see if you could 'fly'! Ahh, scuffed knees, pull up socks n lots of 'playing out' -good times lol!

mumcakes · 22/01/2019 06:47

We loved playing skipping rope, we’d take it in turns to jump in and out. Also we played stuck in the mud a lot. I don’t think my children play many games, there are a lot of health and safety rules!

Blobski1 · 22/01/2019 07:14

We used to spend hours each day playing outdoors, chasing friends and being as loud as lungs let us. Game I recall and never see again involves
french elastic or french skipping. When children stretch it while holding each end and then other jump inside while reciting different rhymes or songs. There were several games with various numbers of players.

letsgomaths · 22/01/2019 07:41

After a science lesson on why we have two ears, it became a playground game for a while. You would point in the direction of someone calling your name: you couldn't see, because you had the hood detached from someone's coat over your eyes. The game became more difficult when two people would call your name at once.

chrisma232 · 22/01/2019 07:58

I used to love Bulldog, kiss chase and also what's the time mr fox was great fun.I know they banned 2 of those games but they were harmless when we played them.Probably what's the time mr fox was my favourite of all of them because it was fun trying not to get caught out when the person turned around as i crept up on them.

Crozziefan · 22/01/2019 08:04

We played hopscotch, elastic, tig, What’s the time Mr Wolf?, skipping. Most games at Primary school were active games. We didn’t stand around much.

Becjames18 · 22/01/2019 08:04

Good old fashioned stuck in the mud! We used to get the teachers involved was great fun! Smile

franklintuesday · 22/01/2019 08:14

Skipping and hopscotch kept us active!
