With laundry stacked high and always increasing, it can be tempting to break even the most basic of laundry rules in order to keep on top of the task. Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the rules you implement (or ignore!) when you’re doing the laundry.

Here’s what Fairy has to say: “We want to know what’s important to you. Have you found a way to save time? A way to get the best stain removal? A way to keep clothes huggably soft? Or even just a way to not lose matching socks! We would love to hear your tricks of the trade.”

What’s your perspective on laundry rules? Either way, Fairy Non Bio wants to know. Do you obey temperature regulations or simply stick everything in at 40? Perhaps you’re the kind of person who avoids overfilling and never fails to air-dry fine fabrics. Or, maybe you fill the machine to the brim and adopt a one size fits all approach to drying that would make manufacturers weep. Whatever they may be, divulge your laundry indiscretions.

Share the rules that you follow and those you ignore on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

Everything goes in at 40 because the higher temperature washes seem to take hours.
I never use fabric softener, don't see the point.

swanlady2000 · 16/04/2018 15:53

I tumble dry practically everything 😂

mooota1514 · 16/04/2018 15:58

I'm lazy and hate pegging out washing. I use an old fashioned laundry maid hoist whenever possible and hang shirts from it on a hanger.

verap · 16/04/2018 16:25

I ignore handwash, just put it as a quick wash on a low temperature.

I usually separate darks and whites but when I need to wash something urgently, I would chuck everything else that needs washing and put a colour catcher sheet in.

Most colours go on 40 degrees and whites on 50-60 degrees.

janeyf1 · 16/04/2018 16:36

I try to limit to 1 or 2 washes a week, mixed loads but avoiding dark reds with other colours. I put one sock inside another so that they stick together and I put bras inside a pillow case so that the straps don't get caught on anything

MSHGW · 16/04/2018 17:24

I ignore 'hand wash only' and 'dry clean only'. Most things are perfectly fine in the washing machine at a low temperature. The only trouble I've had is with wool items shrinking, so I only hand wash those.

lalalauren416 · 16/04/2018 17:27

I literally chuck everything in and it's usually fine! Have noticed my whites are not very white though so I'm going to have to start splitting up lights and dark.

Ikea1234 · 16/04/2018 17:39

Towels at a minimum of 50c, pretty much everything else at 40c. Hand washing rules are meant to be broken, so long as I don't put it on a boil wash for four hours, I find things are fine. I do colour sort, as I like my whites to be white, not bandage grey, but I'm not fastidious about other colours too much. I do find we have a lot of red in our house (school uniforms for starters) so I do tend to put those in on their own wash, just because of the amount. And I avoid stuff that says dry clean only - I can't be bothered (or afford!) that! I iron once a week, and that keeps everyone in uniform and work shirts, so that's plenty!

Lauzipop1 · 16/04/2018 17:59

I always just separate lights and darks.

I've ignored the warning on my sofa though to only get the covers professionally cleaned. I also always wash my waxed rain coat in the machine on a cold wash even though it says handwash only.

strawberrisc · 16/04/2018 18:04

I ALWAYS separate colours from whites. I also use a good washing machine cleaner every few months. I no longer use powder because gels and liquid tabs are cleaner.

helly27 · 16/04/2018 18:25

I also do lights and darks no whites just these two

katieskatie82 · 16/04/2018 18:27

i never mix whites with colours but i always break the handwash only rule. i just but them in the washing machine on a low temp wash x

HowDoYouPronounceJohn · 16/04/2018 18:34

We wash all clothing at 40 degrees. Do not separate into whites, darks etc. (If something is new and coloured, it is handwashed beforehand, and a colour catcher then added to the wash.) Towels at 60 degrees, mainly as I believe it is better for the machine. Tend to use powder for the towels as it is cheaper and they do not get very dirty, and washing liquid for clothing.

PoopMaster · 16/04/2018 18:38

I always use non-bio detergent for woollens or silks (but happily ignore the "hand wash only" and use gentle cycle instead)

I use laundry delicates bags for delicates and discovered they are also handy for washing kids' clothes ruined decorated with glitter/sequins/stuck-on random embellishments - no more picking shiny things out of the washing machine!

Minnibix · 16/04/2018 18:39

Laundry rules why didn't anyone tell me there were laundry rules !!!!!

The only one I have is if it says hand wash I don't buy it, if anyone else buys something that says hand wash then they wash it themselves

Ranita · 16/04/2018 18:44

I always do a separate white wash. Tend to mix dark and colours. Always do a woollens.

user1496053440 · 16/04/2018 18:45

I stick everything in at 40. I always make sure I separate whites and colours though

Marg2k8 · 16/04/2018 19:02

I keep darks and lights separate. I do mix cottons and synthetics. I just do them on the lowest temperature. I sometimes put things in the machine that are really hand wash only.

Sid98 · 16/04/2018 19:37

I wash everything at 30

sheilads105 · 16/04/2018 19:50

I always handwash items that are meant to be handwash only - too many disasters to risk it!

frances93 · 16/04/2018 19:54

Until my daughter was born the rule was chuck it in and hope for the best, but its amazing how much i care about her clothes rather than mine and my husbands! Now i make sure everything of hers is washed in non-bio only with a lovely smelling conditioner, and never ever tumble dried otherwise it shrinks

kittykomp · 16/04/2018 19:57

I cram it all into one load

sarah861421 · 16/04/2018 20:03

I try and do it regularly. I can sort whites, I can wash darks, but I still cant work outwhich pile to put a black and white item in

laurac1987 · 16/04/2018 20:04

No real tips or tricks here! Treat a stain straight away, don't leave it to penetrate into the fabric. Wash colours and whites separately and don't use fabric conditioner in gym clothes, it makes them too silky!

pennwood · 16/04/2018 20:23

I wash on a cool degree fifteen minute wash using a Colour Catcher so no disasters. When purchasing clothes I always look at the labels & avoid dry clean only. Bedding I wash separately on a 60 degree wash. I always put undies in mesh laundry bags to prevent snagging with bra hooks.
