Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Have had a couple of holidays based in or near Crieff. It's a great base to get around.

I take exception to easy to get to, too. A good 4-5 hours from Durham. Only. Fast by rail or airplane from most of England. I can walk out of my house and be in Edinburgh for the day, by train, within 2 hours, but last time I tried that, I had to claim a refund as the signals had gone down, just north of Berwick. We wanted to visit the Lothian buses open day, 2 years running, but both years,we would have had to divert via Carlisle, making the journey almost impossible as a day trip.

Might have been quicker to get to Holland, tbh.

Never been but have always want to go the Shetland and Orkney islands. The scenery and solitude looks amazing!

Wife of a golf fanatic here - and the only upside is that we get to visit Scotland during tournaments. He loathes camping too - we love it - and this year is a win win for us as the only accommodation near Carnoustie is camping. Can’t wait - really looking forward to it.

My favourite city just has to be Edinburgh, and I’m a Londoner.

As a child I remember taking a very long train journey to Edinburgh. It was fabulous. Full of amazing, dark history and we rotted our teeth with tablet and Edinburgh rock and of course irn bru. Best time.

Had a brilliant holiday in Glasgow recently. So much to see and do - the science centre is absolutely amazing, the art galleries are lovely. Shopping and eating was great too. We hired a car and drove out to Loch Lomond, easy peasy, very quick. Gorgeous walking and countryside. Would love to go again, further north this time.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time as we are planning a holiday to Scotland. I've been to Edinburgh and Glasgow before but for Sports tournaments so we didn't venture far from the city or our hotel. I've always wanted to go up to Aberlour and Aviemore as that's where my mothers family originally came from. I'd love to visit the lochs and also Fort William.

One of our best ever holidays was last Easter, Child friendly 'glamping' in the Highlands, the glamping hut had all the mod cons, and was comfy and cosy, it felt like we were in a Hobbit house with the round windows. We were able to have an evening BBQ amongst the gorgeous wood sculptures. The 'big day' to try to spot 'Nessie' was a 10 minute drive away, we bought some souvenirs , went on a fabulous boat ride, but did not spot the monster. The scenery and journey to this beautiful country was a big part of our holiday.

We took our 4 yr old and 4mth old. It took 14hrs to drive but we done Glen coe, loch Ness boat rides, anoch mor, cairgorm national park feeding reindeer was AMAZING but our favourite was coral beach on Skye. In fact we return again in 2 weeks to get married there.

We have good memories of visits to St Andrews and almost getting blown off into the sea by the winds- never experienced anything so strong!

The DC's thought it was fab as they pretended they were flying

at some points they were!

We holidayed in Scotland the Summer after my Dad died. We took my Mum and enjoyed a lovely week in a chalet near Loch Etive. Our daughters were both under 5 so it was a holiday filled with picnics and family days - just lovely.

Nereneya · 26/03/2018 12:42

I've been to Edinburgh and I love it. I wish I could take the kids there son!

sharond101 · 26/03/2018 12:43

We hired a cottage in Melvaig way up North. It was so quiet and peaceful with sheep in the garden. We took our dog who has since passed away so the memories are fond.

mumsbe · 26/03/2018 12:57

We stayed in Edinburgh and had an amazing time at the castle the zoo and art galleries. The food was amazing and the shopping was good too. We enjoyed looking at the swatch shop.

mogloveseggs · 26/03/2018 12:57

Have had two lovely holidays based in Falkirk. The kids love it and want to go again although we might venture further afield next time to the Cairngorms.

BevBrook · 26/03/2018 13:18

We went to the Haven static caravan park at Seton Sands just outside Edinburgh. The children loved it, loads to do on site but also easy to get into Edinburgh, visit the castle, the museums etc. Can't say the weather was fantastic though Grin

Have also been to Loch Fyne and Oban before the children were born and would like to go again, or visit some of the islands.

SoftBlocks · 26/03/2018 13:45

We visited Aberdeenshire and the highlands every year when I was a child and I always thought it was one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The mountains, the pine forests, and beautiful sandy beaches all so tranquil compared to the south of England.

Last year I went back there for a family event and took my daughter on her first trip to Scotland. We went dolphin watching just up from the harbour in Aberdeen and we saw them! Five dolphins jumping around - free! It was great! Then we went down to Duthie Park which is beautiful has great play areas for kids. I think we’ll be going back before too long.

Whatififall · 26/03/2018 14:56

I’ve been to Edinburgh a few times, I love the juxtaposition of the old and the new. The history of the castle and the old town right beside modern shopping like Harvey Nichols.

I’ve been to Pitlochry 3 or 4 times and would love to go back. The drive along the A9 with the forests around you is stunning. We went to Enchanted Forests which was magical. I love Blair Castle, the mile long drive then the White Castle looming above you. We were there for the Athol Games one year and met the Duke. The display put on by the Athol Highlanders was amazing. Aviemore is so beautiful, I liked driving past the snow markers that were higher than our car.

I’d love to win to go back, or to see a different part of Scotland. I’ve never had a bad trip there yet.

slbhill42 · 26/03/2018 15:19

A couple of years ago we had a week camping in Montrose and a week in Aviemore - both brilliant. Loads to do, amazing scenery and easy travel (which we needed with a small child). Highlight in Montrose was our campsite, right on the beach, we could look out at the sea from our beds! From Aviemore it was the Leault farm Working sheepdogs - absolutely amazing.

HALA · 26/03/2018 16:46

We went to Scotland (Edinburgh) for the first time last October holidays. Had a lovely time roaming and climbed up Arthurs seat. I enjoyed every minute, and would definately like to see more of Scotland.

RumAppleGinger · 26/03/2018 18:46

A couple of years ago we hired a boat and did the Caledonian Canal from Inverness to Fort William and back. It was one of the best weeks I've ever had. I have spent a lot of time exploring Scotland but I had never experienced it like this before. Once the wee one grows some see legs I can't wait to do it again.

ncullinane · 26/03/2018 20:27

I have nerve visited Scotland but would absolutely love too My granny was from Scotland therefor my dad used to often visit as a child and has so many special memories there,so I would love to go myself one day and take my children.

Silvertap · 26/03/2018 20:29

We're booked in to go to Craigtoun caravan park in May in St Andrews. We holidayed there as children and I cannot wait to take my children to the castle, the west sands, the maiden rock and Scotland's secret bunker.

I'd love to explore the West Coast next.

Or go to Shetland!

Elpheba · 26/03/2018 21:29

My favourite memory of Scotland is from a very spontaneous trip with a uni friend to Colonsay for a day! She had to go to a funeral of a family friend and so we drove to Oban late at night (infamous town of the fireworks all at once Wink) and stayed in a youth hostel before flying over the next morning. I couldn't believe how beautiful this tiny island was.
The novelty of the "fire service" coming out to make sure we landed safely and then exploring the island itself. We truly experienced all weathers within that day. Torrential rain, wind so bad we thought the flight might not happen and then the most glorious sunshine that coincided with our walk along a beach that looked like it came straight from a travel agent brochure. White sands, blue blue sea...
Maybe it's rose tinted glasses and the optimism of being a young care free student, but it was a magical day and I would love to return (now with my own children in tow!) and see if it is how I remember...

DonkeyPunch88 · 26/03/2018 21:33

I haven't been to Scotland, yet! It's a very big yet as it's always been on my list of places to see before I die.
My in laws went Fort William last year and from the photographs it looks just breath taking, so that would be my choice. Maybe I can convince DP to take me for my 30th birthday this year Grin

Flapdoodles · 26/03/2018 21:36

I have many happy memories of holiday's in Scotland. More recently we had a family holiday at a house in Errogie. It was quite remote with a lovely big garden and we had days out at Loch Ness and Inverness.

I am looking forward to taking my children to Edinburgh Castle some time, reliving some of my childhood memories.
