Going on a family holiday doesn’t have to mean venturing to far off lands, and there can be lots to experience closer to home. Scotland is so easy to get to and can be an ideal family holiday destination. VisitScotland would love to hear about the family holidays you’ve had in Scotland - and if you haven’t been, where in Scotland would you like to visit?

Here’s what VisitScotland has to say: Scotland celebrates the Year of Young People in 2018 #YOYP2018 and what better time to visit to enjoy a fantastic holiday experience across any of its regions. We’re a country packed with family friendly activities; from the great outdoors including wildlife, beaches and country parks to historic castles and stately homes and lots in between. Check out the National Trust for Scotland’s new playful gardens and playparks opening this spring at Brodie Castle in Moray and Newhailes House and Gardens outside Edinburgh. There’s also fantastic opportunity to visit Scotland’s islands – an adventure on a Cal Mac ferry to a west coast island or Northlink for a ferry to the Shetland and Orkney islands is all part of the adventure! What’s more, there's plenty of quality accommodation and unusual ones to boot! Ever thought about staying in a yurt or tipi, a converted church or lighthouse.

Be inspired to find out more on our unmissable family attractions, outdoor adventures and top 50 family hotspots in Scotland – check out www.visitscotland.com/holidays-breaks/family/

What happy memories do you have from a family holiday to Scotland? Do you have tales from visiting some of Scotland’s castles, islands, National Trust sites, beaches or parks? Have you looked into visiting and found some interesting accommodation? Would you like to visit Scotland’s cities or experience the great outdoors?

Whatever your family holiday memories or what you’d like to do in Scotland, share this below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

The area around Gairloch is fabulous - we walk every day, throw stones in the sea and watch the sun set over the islands over a dram. We hit the most spectacular run if weather last summer - huge wide open beaches, fields of wild flowers and seals basking off the shore. The garlic butter langoustines at Apple Ross in are also worth a special mention! We have previously been to Kylesku, Ardnamurchan, Inchnadamph and this Easter we are off to Arran. Just heavenly.

We love Scotland, especially the isles. Our most magical trip is probably the Isle of Eigg. We walked to the Singing Sands beach at the top of the island and swam in the sea. We took a day trip to Rum and a pod of dolphins surrounded our boat.

Another great memory is from Harris watching two golden eagles flying in the sunset over Taransay. Loved both Shetland and Orkney. We went to Orkney during the St Magnus festival and would love to return once we are no longer confined to school holidays.

Still on the list: Islay Jura and Barra (at least one of them)

I've always wanted to visit Edinburgh and then travel to the Highlands and the islands.
Hopefully somewhere along the way I'll be transported back 200 odd years and meet Jamie Frazer from Outlander 😘.

The Scottish Crannog centre
Hill House (please donate to save this breathing house)
Standing stones - loads and loads of standing stones and burials
Pack a picnic and take a drive - amazing scenery and 'finds' off the beaten track
Sense of humour (see photo at Castle Campbell)

We stayed in Scotland near Loch Rannoch, beautiful setting great views and lots of outdoor activities. Lots of things for the kids to do fishing walking and general exploring! Only negative there were lots of mosquitos (but we were next to the water I suppose). But looking to go back soon near the coast Smile

WeeMadArthur · 27/03/2018 09:14

We stopped in Glasgow and visited the Transport Museum and had a look around the centre, went to Loch Lomond then up to near Glen Eagles which is quite a central place to travel to Stirling and Edinburgh as well. We visited both Stirling and Edinburgh Castles, went across the Forth Bridges by road and train, loved the little Sea Life Centre just at the foot of the rail bridge with the rescue seal pups. Edinburgh was impressive, but my favourite was Stirling Castle, not as busy, the guides were really knowledgeable and funny.

I would love to do Orkney, really want to see Skara Brae, get on a boat to see dolphins and generally muck about on those lovely (if windy) beaches. I’m waiting for DS to be old enough to be interested instead of whinging his way round anything historical!

Visited Scotland numerous times as a child with my parents, we had friends living in Edinburgh who we used to visit every couple of years. We absolutely loved it there, the people are so warm and welcoming, I always remember the big carousel we used to go on whenever we went there. Will have to take my children some day so they can make memories there too.

I'm a runner and the Loch Ness marathon has been my favourite run to date (so much so I've done it a few times!). It was breathtakingly beautiful - almost beautiful enough to take my mind off the pain! I'd love to return on a leisure only basis as sadly it has only been fleeting visits so far.

Really enjoy visiting Edinburgh, fond memories of visiting as a child. DD has a December birthday so would love to take her to the Christmas market on one of her birthdays.

Shetland is on my hit list of Scottish places still to visit.

We've had so many great holidays in Scotland. Highlights include:

  • White sandy beaches and turquoise water on Harris. Probably the most beautiful place I've ever been in my life.
  • Sands Caravan & Camping Park just outside Gairloch. Camping amongst the dunes with a breeze that keeps the midges at bay. Big pitches, scrupulously clean facilities and the kids just have a ball from dawn to dusk. I'd last been there as an 8 year old and it made me so happy to see my own 8 year old enjoying exactly the same freedom as I had at that age.
  • Islay, Port Weymss. Cuddling up in front of a peat fire, watching the light from the lighthouse on the island across the bay and listening to the foghorn on a foggy evening. Then getting up the next morning to blue skies and watching the seals play.
Sleepysausage · 27/03/2018 13:41

We've stayed in the Trossachs a few times, in a old hotel converted into holiday apartments. It's right next to a loch and has excellent facilities. Beautiful walking area too.

We like the coast and have stayed in a couple of properties right beside the sea. Lighthouse cottage (but was under different management) and Ferry cottage were both fabulous locations with amazing views. The place I want to return to though is Mull for the relaxed feel, good food and the wildlife. I also love that so many spots in Scotland are dog-friendly.

One family memory is of visiting Eilean Donan and a guide taking DS outside on to some steps and giving him a real sword as big as him to try out. DS was indeed happy, I was more heart in mouth. A few years ago now but not that many as DS is still school age.

CMOTDibbler · 27/03/2018 17:31

We've never done a family holiday to Scotland, but ds really wants to go to Edinburgh

blueberry549 · 27/03/2018 20:29

Have only holidayed in Scotland a couple of times, both before my lo was born, but would love to go back and explore more. Would love to visit Kyle of Lochalsh and Isle of Skye especially. What surprised me most last time I visited was the stunning beach in Nairn - so beautiful and so quiet! No fighting over space like some beach holiday destinations, and yet gorgeous golden sand. I had no idea before then that Scotland had such good beaches!

DoubleLottchen · 27/03/2018 20:32

I've been on several holidays to Scotland - mainly to cities, but not with the DC. I'd love to take them - I imagine somewhere coastal, maybe even one of the islands (they would love the ferry!)

foxessocks · 27/03/2018 20:57

Visiting my dh family in Perth - lovely place and very happy memories

noplease · 28/03/2018 07:36

About 20 years ago I went on holiday with my family when I was 14/15 to Inverness. I can't remember much detail but we stayed in a little cottage and it was lovely. I especially remember visits to loch Ness,
I would love to go that area again.

epicclusterfuck · 28/03/2018 08:25

Lots of lovely holidays when kids were little, St Andrews several times, great beaches and play park at Craigtoun. Dumfries and Galloway is timeless, particularly Kirkcudbright area. Mull is fantastic for wildlife and beaches and the Black Isle with dolphin watching at chanonry point. Every holiday we seem to manage a boat trip to see seals.

When kids were older we started going abroad and had some great holidays but even so my DS would say, can't we go on holiday in Scotland? He enjoyed those holidays the most.

colleenw · 28/03/2018 10:18

My most favorite place is Edinburgh - I took my husband there to watch the Royal Tattoo. It was the best 2 days, in one of the most beautiful cities I've visited.

Shockers · 28/03/2018 11:52

February half terms spent with three other families in a beautiful lodge in Nethy Bridge.

Icy lochs glimmering under cornflower blue winter skies; hacking through the woods on placid horses and seeing hares dash through the snow; being dazzled by the sun on the snow up Cairngorm mountain; sunset in the forest with the sled dog team- coming across a still, silent stag, standing in the snow... magical.

Then back to a roaring fire and jointly made dinner, before scooting out in our cossies, through the snow to the hot tub outside!

These are holidays our children will never forget.

ReelingLush18 · 28/03/2018 14:33

I've been to Edinburgh on a romantic city break, Glasgow to stay with a friend (as a singleton) and spent five days twixt the two cities 'en famille', when the DC were little. It's a country I regret not having visited more. Fully intend to spend some time in Scotland, but further north, once the DC have gone their own ways. Really fancy doing a walking holiday on Shetland (inspired by the TV series!).

InMySpareTime · 28/03/2018 15:44

Had a lovely week staying in a cottage in Archiestown (middle of nowhere in Scotland)
We went at the end of August so Scottish schools were back but still English holidays.
Being responsible parents, we took the DCs round a load of distilleries, then left them alone on a beach while we walked 5 miles without themBlush.
We also went to a really weird theme park near Aviemore, that seemed to be all about illusions. The DCs loved it!

I got married in fort Augustus on the bank of Loch Ness. I would love to go back and take my little boy to show him

MrsRobert · 28/03/2018 18:25

I live in Scotland and would stay in the Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel again and bring my little boy to Blair Drummond Safari Park. Duchally is also lovely for walks and they have ducks wandering around the estate. Drummond Castle's gardens nearby are very pretty. Dunkeld is lovely and the Beatrix Potter Centre there is worth visiting!

Strigiformes · 28/03/2018 18:59

My favourite place to visit in Scotland so far has been Edinburgh. Brilliant city and lots to see and do. I'd like to spend time in the Highlands at some point too.

EggysMom · 28/03/2018 21:07

I went on holiday to Argyll, and loved it so much that I bought the company I moved up there to live for ten years! I was lucky enough to have to travel to and around Mull for work. Even while living up there, I'd holiday around Scotland, going to Arran and Sutherland - there is so much to see, so many different landscapes. My next plan (having moved south again) is a campervan holiday to show DH and DS around the beautiful country.
