Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I wipe the seal after every wash and leave the door open between washes. Every 2-3 months I do a service wash using a product I buy from the supermarket.

Kennylou12 · 13/03/2018 20:56

I use mould and mildew remover spray every now and again to get rid of any signs of mould! Just make sure you thoroughly rinse the spray off after as you don't want to bleach your clothes!

I do an empty hot wash every week and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This seems to keep the machine in tip top condition.

cluckyhen · 13/03/2018 21:16

I like to give mine a white vinegar rinse once every 6 mths and I always leave the door open

Ikea1234 · 13/03/2018 21:17

A few tips...I run a de scaling / cleaning treatment through approximately every 6 weeks as I live in a REALLY hard water area. I use a variety of programmes on the machine (hot ones help clean it through) and ai leave the door open when it's not in use to help it stay fresh and dry. I also clean the outside (round buttons and knobs) and places like seals and drawers. It's where bacteria and gunk collect and it helps keep your machine looking good.

angela25rose · 13/03/2018 21:23

Don't overload clothes into your machine it won't be able to run the cycle properly and every few weeks make sure you run your machine on a hot wash with no clothes in the drum this will help keep the machine clean

Marg2k8 · 13/03/2018 21:27

Don't forget to take out the dispenser drawer and clean it regularly.

lhlee62 · 13/03/2018 21:27

I leave the door open and occasionally do an empty hot wash

juju3 · 13/03/2018 21:43

Always leave the door ajar between washes

ninamotylinski · 13/03/2018 21:47

I run a washing machine cleaner through it every month, clean out the detergent drawer and rubber inner regularly and always leave the door open between washes to air it

farhanac · 13/03/2018 21:52

Throwing in a ball of aluminum foil to the wash every now and then

Cailin7 · 13/03/2018 21:53

I do an occasional hot wash, but maybe only once a year. every few months a wipe around the seals and drum with some warm soapy water and wash the drawer. I have always used fairy non bio powder and have had no issues. we live in a soft water area which probably helps.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/03/2018 22:07

I feed mine a heavy protein diet so that it grows big and strong.

-I do nothing of the sort. I literally do nothing and hope for the best.

tiddles12 · 13/03/2018 22:20

i clean it after every wash with diluted vinegar especially the seal. I clean the wash powder compartment every week by putting it through the dishwasher.

buckley1983 · 13/03/2018 22:43

I always keep our washing machine door shut - I'm terrified the cats might climb in for a snooze & I won't notice! :(
I do put a hot wash on (empty) once a month with white vinegar & bicarb. It keeps it reasonably fresh & clean.
I also wipe the door seal & clean out the drawer monthly too.

Chrisboswell9281 · 13/03/2018 22:50

I do an empty wash time and again and leave the door open after a wash to let it dry out, makes a big difference.

twinklenic · 13/03/2018 22:52

i dont have any special routine with my machine. just make sure i wash out the drawer every now and then

Jesswoods1992 · 13/03/2018 23:16

Put it on a hot wash once a month full cycles with nothing in it also I take out the drawer and give it a good clean yes with a cotton bud if needed to get in to those small places you can't reach

KittyKat88 · 13/03/2018 23:26

I try and leave the door open, and wipe out excess water from the rubber lining. Every so often I do an empty drum wash with a descaling powder too.

marrich · 14/03/2018 10:46

I run through 40 degree cycle with a tablespoon of vinegar every 12 washes.

brokebuthappy123 · 14/03/2018 11:15

If the fabric softener dispenser is grotty, remove and either run it through your dishwasher (in the top basket) or wash in the sink with hot soapy water.

lilyboleyn · 14/03/2018 11:18

We leave the door open after a wash and occasionally use descaler.
The little machine is a lot healthier now I’ve realised to check all our clothes for stickers before washing (2 year old adores stickers!!!) Grin

phillie1 · 14/03/2018 12:37

empty very hot wash once in a while

merlymerly · 14/03/2018 13:11

Clean and deodorise your machine with the simple combination of bicarb soda and vinegar. Either put them in the drum (top loader) or put the bicarb in the detergent compartment, and the vinegar in the softener compartment (top loader), and run an empty, hot cycle.

Sugarhouse · 14/03/2018 14:28

Always leave the door open when not in use to prevent mould and every know and then do an empty hot wash with bleach to give it a good clean in machine and pipes
