Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I try and do regular washings on a short cycle

kittykomp · 14/03/2018 16:01

leave the door open when not in use

lorrainej162 · 14/03/2018 16:28

I run it on an empty hot wash and clean the detergent drawer once a month, and wipe the seal and the glass door every week.

Wipe with an old hand towel in the lower rubber rim after use to absorb water to keep the rubber dry and try not to use fabric conditioner in every wash as this builds up in the pipes.

Leave the washing machine door open after washes and I regularly clear the soap drawer so that it doesn't clog up and monthly I put it on a very hot wash with a washing machine cleaner x

I leave the door open between washes and that's about it really! It's lasting okay so far...

Nicnac81 · 14/03/2018 18:42

Once a month I do a hot wash with a sterilising tablet

badgermum · 14/03/2018 19:21

I Make sure I leave the door open after I run a cycle for at least an hour. This will allow the water to evaporate and not let water get trapped in there and once a month I run the machine on the hottest wash, I also regularly clean out the seal around the door and the door itself with an antibacterial wipe, it's quick ans easy and picks up all the fluff and debris which gathers there

sweir1 · 14/03/2018 19:55

Powder, not liquid and leave the door open to air out

goldenretriever1978 · 14/03/2018 20:52

Hot wash with white vinegar every week.

sm2012 · 14/03/2018 20:53

Keeping the door open for freshness and not using it much seems to work well ;)

nelel34 · 14/03/2018 23:14

I use dishwasher tabs white vinegar and a little bleach in the wash drum and set it on a hot cycle to give the machine a deep clean once a month it gets rid of nasty smells I also leave the door open between washes so the drum as time to dry out and I also clean the draw reguarly to stop lime scale and product build up.

nelel34 · 14/03/2018 23:17

I leave the door open between washes to let the drum dry out and I clean the draw out regular to stop product build up and every month to get rid of nasty smells I use 2 dishwasher tabs a little bleach and some white vinegar in the drum and put on a hot wash.

MrRichTea · 15/03/2018 00:26

Leave door open once in a while, make sure you clean out powder tray

jamielmdjs · 15/03/2018 02:16

Sarah always leaves the door open but I hate that. Don't think it'll help, get it closed (and stops kitchen smells from going in).

Admittedly, we don't do a clean cycle as often as we should, only when it starts to smell. Sarah keeps buying cleaning products for it but i just go for the hot empty wash.

rhinosuze · 15/03/2018 07:26

I leave the door open too after a wash and use a regular cleaner. My rim/seal is gross though so I've clearly neglected that and not really sure what to do about it now.
Thankfully I seem to have looked after it well enough though as don't know what we would do without it

TheClitterati · 15/03/2018 07:33

Soda crystals in every wash, I leave the door open and when I read threads like this on MN I run an empty vinegar hot wash.

wonderstuff16 · 15/03/2018 09:09

Always leave the door open after using, and run a hot wash every so often

CopperPan · 15/03/2018 09:43

I do a regular hot wash with vinegar, and make sure I leave the door open after each wash. I wipe down the door seal and make sure nothing has got trapped in there, and we have to wash out the detergent drawer every week.

runkaterun · 15/03/2018 09:46

Errr this is a thing?

Amber0685 · 15/03/2018 11:18

My washing machine has lasted ages I do very little, leave the door open, wash the dispenser drawer when mucky that's it. Bosch was a very good buy.

maisiesnan · 15/03/2018 12:11

I no longer use the drawer for detergents it goes straight into the drum. Roughly every other month I do a long hot wash using white vinegar instead of detergent.

thesockgap · 15/03/2018 14:30

Washing machine engineer who came out to us a few years ago advised us to run a "service wash" once a month or so, a 90 degree wash with no actual clothes in the machine.

I also regularly take out the powder drawer and clean it out, and always wipe the inside of the door and the rubber seal after every wash.

Joneseygirl77 · 15/03/2018 14:52

Keep the door open after every wash, use a deep service washing machine clean on a monthly basis and clean out detergent drawer and wipe round seal at same time, only use washing powder. I also run a 90degree empty wash every month to clean out the drum.
