Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I also do an empty hot wash when I remember every couple of weeks after being told to on MN.

To be honest mine is on it's last legs and I'm hoping it just survives another year.

I have some wash tablets that I run through now and again (which reminds me I probably need to do it now)

addverbaan · 13/03/2018 17:04

I use a washing machine cleaner once per month

Ranita · 13/03/2018 17:06

I use vinegar instead of fabric conditioner. No gunky drawer and keeps the pipes clean. Switched to vinegar as fabric conditioner makes my son's eczema flare up.

mooota1514 · 13/03/2018 17:08

I leave the door open after use, and run a hot wash every so often

Minnibix · 13/03/2018 17:18

I always wipe and dry the door seal (rubber) as any water left in there will eventually rot the rubber. Leave the door open a little when not in use and give it a hot wash clean about once a month

socat · 13/03/2018 17:27

Wash at 60 mostly and do a empty BOIL service wash periodically. Clean out soap draw regularly and wipe seal dry each time and leave door ajar.

Lauzipop1 · 13/03/2018 17:40

I put it through a cleaning rinse once a month with a washing machine cleaner. Also wipe it out quite often and always make sure that pockets are empty so it's not left all around the washing machine.

Do a clean cycle once a month and also clean the tray once a month

eve34 · 13/03/2018 18:43

I do a hot wash every now and then. And when I remember dry and door and seals so stop the mould.

tabbaz123 · 13/03/2018 19:05

I do use a washing machine cleaner and regularly clean out the drawer - although since converting to tabs straight into the drum I find I do not have a messy drawer that used to clog up with powder.

sezz35 · 13/03/2018 19:11

Clean the soap dispenser tray regularly

arat · 13/03/2018 19:12

(apart from never buying a Hotpoint machine again! ...) leave the door open between washes & either alternate 90 degree wash with white vinegar or self-clean program every few weeks

madge47 · 13/03/2018 19:22

I give my washing machine a clean with white vinegar every few months.

hanarees · 13/03/2018 19:29

I use soda crystals for every wash

OfIceAndFire · 13/03/2018 19:46

Wipe the washing machine on the inside after each wash.

Leave door open between washes.

Hot wash with cleaner once a month.

helly27 · 13/03/2018 19:49

I just use the self clean cycle every 3 months

allthingsred · 13/03/2018 20:01

Going to sound really obvious.
But read the user manual.
After purchasing my current machine I read manual & was shocked to read it said powder was not recommended. So I only use liquid detergent.
Make sure an empty cycle run monthly & draws/seals washed down every 2 weeks

APJ1 · 13/03/2018 20:03

Every now and again, put bleach through a short cycle to clean the machine through.

gd2011 · 13/03/2018 20:14

In a soft water area so much easier, I occasionally wipe the rubber seal and the door and empty the filter every couple of months

alsproject · 13/03/2018 20:15

we leave the detergent draw and door open so that the machine dries out

Lheath · 13/03/2018 20:18

When I do remember I try to do an empty hot wash. Use a descaling treatment and try to keep the drawer clean.

Rachdayan · 13/03/2018 20:23

Always leave the door slightly open to air out, always check the rubber seal for odd bits and bobs like coins and hairpins, and the occaisional empty wash on a hot setting.

freefan · 13/03/2018 20:25

I always leave the door ajar after a wash to let it air dry and wash the drawer out. I also like to add little lid full of zoflora, washed through on an empty cold wash once a week to keep it all disinfected and every month or so I put vinegar through on the hottest wash to stop it getting fuzzed up.

cocochips · 13/03/2018 20:32

Calgon once a month and leaving the door open after a wash to let it dry
