It’s no surprise that often having a family means more mess around the house, no matter how much you try to stay on top of it all. Plus, in many cases there is that one family member that seems to be able to make the most mess possible...realises that person is yourself Blush. With that being said, Caesarstone would like you to tell us the biggest mess that’s been on your worktop and who in your family created it.

Here’s what Jonathan Stanley, Vice President of Marketing at Caesarstone has to say: “It’s impossible to completely child proof your house and you accept that accidents and innocent errors of judgment are going to happen. You can mitigate these by choosing the right finishes. No work surface is indestructible, quartz included, however quartz is virtually non-porous, which means spills will sit on the surface and not seep into it. That apple juice should just wipe off with a cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner and non-scratch pad will remove any crayon works of art. Critically, wine spills from that well deserved glass at the end of day should also wipe off without a trace.”

Was your young DC having a go at painting and decided your worktop would make a better canvas than the paper? Perhaps your afternoon of baking took a turn for the worst when eggs and flour exploded all over you worktop? Or maybe your pet has on more than one occasion jumped up onto the worktop with muddy paws...or even worse decided it was their new litter tray!

Whatever your biggest worktop mess is, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

My oldest son (now 3) when weaning, he threw everything on the floor - spinach, plates, cups rice.... it took ages to clean up. Now I have a second who is just starting with weaning 😞

This is really disgusting but one summer a fox came in through the patio door while dd2 and I were upstairs. Our elderly (and small) dog must have hidden somewhere. The revolting fox jumped up on my freshly cleaned worktop and pooed on it. And in several places on the floor. Actually just horrible but I was mostly just relieved it hadn't gone for my dog.

Home made slime made by 10 year old and friends , squished all over worktops. The wretched stuff made from pva glue, laundry liquid and food colouring can take forever to scrub off. Angry

My family are complete angels compared to work colleagues ! We had that cheapo white , porous work surface in our staff room , one evening working late our boss ordered an indian takeaway, he plonked it on the side and left it for a bit , the bag was tilted and a red greasy sauce soaked through the paper bag.
must have only been there 5 - 10 mins but for the whole 7 years I worked there the stain remained.
I'd even sporadically pour thick bleach over it and leave it for 30 mins , no joy !
I visited some old colleagues in the summer and they'd had a re-furb , the first thing I said was 'thank god that curry stain has gone !' it gave me nightmares !

TheKnackeredChef · 28/02/2018 13:41

I'd love to tell you it was the DCs but I have to confess it was me. I knocked over a pot of that super concentrated red food colouring gel and by the time I realised, it had seeped into the oak work surface. You can imagine my horror. Cleaning it off was a nightmare and I can still see the stain it left. It was like something from a slasher movie!

Babysitting my sister as a baby, left the sudocrem on the floor, rubbed into carpets, the side of the coffee table, the edge of the sofa, my lord it took so long to get out Grin

I placed two full plastic containers of soup in the microwave, lids removed and slightly offset to the containers as per the instructions. So far, so good.
During the heating process, one of the lids re-attached itself to the base and must have shaken, tipped over and knocked the other one too, so I had the contents of two large containers of soup swilling around in the microwave.
Unfortunately, I didn't have enough common sense to place a tray and kitchen towels etc at the microwave door when I opened it, so the tidal wave of chicken and sweetcorn soup / minestrone poured out, all over the worktop, into cupboards and drawers (and their contents) below, all over the doors, handles, flooring, my slippers and every crack and crevasse that the liquid could find. Ohh what joy and entirely my own fault!
There was so much soup everywhere that I ended up scooping it with ladles and my hands. I was still finding traces of it weeks (months?) later and now have a terror of microwavable soup containers. I'm a rubbish cook anyway!! Blush

When my DC had to make a model volcano for school recently. The surface was covered in wet plaster mixed with glue, tiny bits of polystyrene and various shades of grey, red and orange paint!! Thankfully it all came off!

One year, DH decided to make his own almond paste for the Christmas cake he made. He started off with version 1 - but the ground almonds, egg whites and sugar wouldn't come together. So he dumped the mixture and washed the pyrex bowl (in cold water). Then put in the egg whites, sugar and ground almonds into the Pyrex bowl and put it on top of the pan with hot water he was using to heat it all.

The bowl exploded. We were picking bits of sugary, sticky almond crusted glass out of the worktop, splash back and kitchen tiles and the kitchen floor for months.

Third time lucky for the almond paste by the way. He used a metal bowl on top of the pan...

An entire tub of Sudocrem mixed with ripped up tea bags, “for a magic spell.”

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 28/02/2018 19:53

The making of strawberry jam. Left on the hob, unattended, whilst he went out for a walk. It bubbled over and a sugary lava flowed across the surfaces turning solid as it cooled.

CathBookworm · 28/02/2018 20:12

If it's a mess, it's usually my youngest who has created it, and it would involve glitter, paint and dried up bits of plasticine.

Summerdays2014 · 28/02/2018 20:40

I made a cake with my just turned 2 year old for the first time last week... he insisted on doing everything himself, including the eggs. That was fun. (Actually it was fun and we both really enjoyed it!)

notapizzaeater · 28/02/2018 21:42

Red hot jam, a jar exploded and it was too hot to do anything with it so had to leave it to drip ...

Heartofglass12345 · 28/02/2018 22:06

Superglue! The end was stuck together so i snipped it with the scissors. I squeezed it and it exploded! It was all over the (new) worktops and my hands! I still had it on my fingernails for over a week after, and never did get it off the worktop Blush

buckley1983 · 28/02/2018 22:23

My son & his buddy decided to 'make a cake' while I as bathing the younger one - they were suspiciously quiet.. upon investigation, I found them huddled over a bowl on the kitchen worktop surrounded by what appeared to hundreds of maggots. I was almost relieved when I discovered this as actually just rice. The 'cake' contained a rather disgusting mixture of what later was revealed to be rice, blackcurrant juice & yeast.. hmm!!

tillymint21 · 28/02/2018 22:33

DH and a tomato-based prawn curry earlier this week - firstly he misjudged the heat of the new induction hob and sizzling spice oil went all over the just-painted walls and worktop, then he tripped (dramatically) while carrying plates to the table and curry was spattered across every work surface, floor and wall possible.

FlaviaAlbia · 01/03/2018 05:21

Me, making lentil soup. I put too much in a blender with a not very good lid and the pressure forced the lid off and it went everywhere, workbench, walls, clothes, hair. Then the lentils began to set like glue as soon as they hit the surfaces and had to be scraped off. Not fun at the time but funny now.

Autumnsparkles · 01/03/2018 06:50

Bugs, snails and Worms.

DH had kindly dig up how hard earned gains from the allotment and dumped it on the worktop before leaving for work.

I came home to find the unwashed veg (I am talking 8 boxes) and all the creepy crawlers had left their homes to have a look around my kitchen.

jacqui5366 · 01/03/2018 07:07

Has to be without a doubt the green slime we made at half term, we added glitter to add insult to injury, the vicious stirring from my ds meant it hit the cupboards as well as my cream worktops which remained green for several days until after many treatments of weak bleach they were restored to their former glory.

NerrSnerr · 01/03/2018 09:06

I always make a huge mess when making chilli in the slow cooker. No idea how I make such a mess.

Itis6oclocksomewhere · 01/03/2018 09:15

I think the worst thing was when I was having a cooking disaster with a joint of a beef.
The oven had a temperature problem and the beef was being incinerated, but was set to cook slowly on a low temp. I got the beef out of the oven, my oven gloves were wet so the heat of the pan started to burn my hands. I dropped the roasting pan on the worktop whilst swearing and hopping around the kitchen nursing my hands. Swapped gloves and went back to sort out the beef. Lifted the pan up and the worktop surface had bubbled. Large blisters of plastic in a roasting pan shape.
Aside from a delicious joint of beef being ruined, it was a rental house we lived in at the time! That was fun explaining that to the letting agent!

Blahblahblueblee · 01/03/2018 10:36

Baking always is messy in our house, the kids mixing is so messy!
The other thing is chopped tomatoes once the koi W is dry, I hate getting that off the worktop!

userinfinity · 01/03/2018 11:46

My sister was blending milkshakes at a family get together when my 2yo nephew decided to turn the blender on when her back was turned. The lid wasn't on and so milk everywhere. Nephew stood smiling sheepishly

Butterfly1975 · 01/03/2018 12:36

2 crystal wine glasses that were a wedding present and which fell out of a cupboard and smashed on the worktop! I've never seen so many miniscule bits of glass and genuinely thought we would be finding them for the next year to come!!

Cheapo chunky Ikea wine glasses for us from now on (they hold more wine tooWink)
