This activity is now closed

It’s no surprise that often having a family means more mess around the house, no matter how much you try to stay on top of it all. Plus, in many cases there is that one family member that seems to be able to make the most mess possible...realises that person is yourself Blush. With that being said, Caesarstone would like you to tell us the biggest mess that’s been on your worktop and who in your family created it.

Here’s what Jonathan Stanley, Vice President of Marketing at Caesarstone has to say: “It’s impossible to completely child proof your house and you accept that accidents and innocent errors of judgment are going to happen. You can mitigate these by choosing the right finishes. No work surface is indestructible, quartz included, however quartz is virtually non-porous, which means spills will sit on the surface and not seep into it. That apple juice should just wipe off with a cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner and non-scratch pad will remove any crayon works of art. Critically, wine spills from that well deserved glass at the end of day should also wipe off without a trace.”

Was your young DC having a go at painting and decided your worktop would make a better canvas than the paper? Perhaps your afternoon of baking took a turn for the worst when eggs and flour exploded all over you worktop? Or maybe your pet has on more than one occasion jumped up onto the worktop with muddy paws...or even worse decided it was their new litter tray!

Whatever your biggest worktop mess is, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I once dropped an open packet of icing sugar it went everywhere. it created such a cloud you could taste it in the air!

StoneGuys · 09/03/2018 23:38

My house sitter spraying glass cleaner on the surface to get a stain out.... now has white patches that can not be removed.

Maybe worth people checking on how to clean caesarstone without damaging it.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/03/2018 01:12

Mine was not down to the toddler or the dog. It was me baking pizza dough from an awful recipe I found online. It was everywhere. Sticky, wet, gloopy stuff. I have since found a better recipe!

Vast white worktops in my aunt and uncle house. I was 18 and house sitting. Had Indian takeaway food for dinner, leftovers out on the bench. Went to bed. Next morning, discovered the 2 cats had been walking through it, eating it etc. Cue lots of Orangey-red stained counter tops and units... and floor...and cats! Very difficult to remove.

I went through a phase of making lots of homemade soups and thought it would be a good idea to buy an actual soup maker.
First time I used it there appeared to be some sort of blockage so I took the lid off to clear it, there was quite a narrow steam spout and I made sure that was clear too. Put the lid back on, few seconds later the soup erupted through this steam spout, hot soup covering me and (it seemed) the whole kitchen, including the ceiling.
The blockage had obviously meant some pressure had built up then been released, so it was the force of it rather than the amount. The worktop was splattered in vegetable soup, the worktop next to the soup maker also covered. I didn't know whether to spoon it up, wipe it up, lick it up...
Now if I fancy soup for lunch I buy a tin of Heinz.

Leaving the kids to make flapjack..... Golden syrup went into the pan but the transfer .. OMG.... Tin sideways on the hob, drawer, wicker baskets and then finally the floor!!!!! With underfloor heating!!!! Arrgghhhh!!!!!!

Spitzbergen · 10/03/2018 10:03

I dropped a pot of chilli once and it went everywhere! My DS (5) loves baking and making chocolate crackles was quite a messy experience Grin

elizaco · 10/03/2018 10:16

Baking day when the children want to make everything - cakes, scones, biscuits. They don't tidy up after each batch - they just move onto another surface/table!

Buzzardbird · 10/03/2018 11:25

Superglue...it's never coming off. :(

welshmardymum · 10/03/2018 12:46

making a playdough and paint pizza complete with real flour was one highlight!

SilverHairedCat · 10/03/2018 13:33

Eggs. Cooked eggs. Smelly, exploded, boiled eggs. The water ran dry after my husband fell asleep and left them on the gas hob with a lid on. Cue stinking explosion of egg, all over the counter, the ceiling, the walls, the cooker, the floor and the slightly eggshell-shocked dog who was sleeping in the doorway.

SilverJellyfish · 10/03/2018 13:49

My kitchen every time I attempt to make last minute cakes for bake sales....I now stick to shop bought Blush

Custardo · 10/03/2018 14:13

ive got one of those pod coffee machines....in the morning i NEED coffee so i come downstairs and turn it on - those of you that have one will know that they are somewhat slow - so i flick the switch and run t the loo - if still not quite done i will then run into the living room to find the hairbrush - and run back again and start brushing my hair until its finished. then i put a pod in for dh - i then flick the switch and run upstairs to wake dh and sort out my clothes - find a pair of tights without a hole Hmm and run back downstairs - as you can imagine this goes terribly terribly wrong on more than one occasion and i return to what i an only describe as a lake of coffee all over the worktop.

and i keep doing it ffs

CecilyBlue · 10/03/2018 14:48

I was cooking a pot of stew on the stove top and didn't realise the pirex dish I was using wasn't suitable for the stove top and should only be used inside the oven.

The dish exploded and the stew ended up everywhere in the kitchen, over the countertops and even on the doors and ceiling. Safe to say I've never made that mistake again!

Nicola27 · 10/03/2018 16:03

The worst mess was when my daughter decided to colour in a picture whilst I was cooking. I put something under her paper but she had moved her picture and the brightly coloured felt tips she was using went through the paper to leave a horrible mess on my worktop. My worktop was wooden and I couldn't ever get rid of the colours although they did fade a little over time.

mumto2teenagers · 10/03/2018 19:27

Once when making cakes the bag of flour split open, flour gets into everything and is almost impossible to clean up.

quizqueen · 10/03/2018 20:38

I didn't put the top of the liquidiser on properly when I was making home made soup and splattered everywhere. I didn't learn my lesson as I did it another time with a fruit smoothie!

NextIndia · 11/03/2018 00:09

Probably me and regularly too. Uncooked rice and lentils. Every. Single. Time.

AlwaysOldBeforeMyTime · 11/03/2018 06:59

My most irritating mess was created by DH - he managed to superglue a nerf gun to our kitchen counter, so I now have a nice ring of blue superglue right in the middle of the worktop 😡

Warpdrive · 11/03/2018 07:39

Fish pie mix. I can still smell it now. Vile.

Crumble67 · 11/03/2018 16:22

My worse disaster was when I made a smoothie for the family. I was on a health kick and had bought a blender. Determined to sneak in some extra fruit and veg for the kids 5 a day I overfilled the blender and forgot to place the lid on properly and it went everywhere. I thought that I had cleaned it all up but a few days later noticed a strange smell and realised that the mixture had run through the joins of the worktop and settled on the top of our washing machine that was plugged in underneath it and run down the back and was a gooey mess.

Peoniesandcats · 11/03/2018 17:04

I think my cats secretly get on the kitchen worktops, every time I give the kitchen a clean there seems to be lots more dirt than I was expecting. So I'm blaming the fur babies! x

pinkjjf27 · 12/03/2018 13:11

i have just hosted a mothers day tea for my mother my late husbands mother . My kids baked cakes my four year old wanted to use the piping bag we have icing up the wall on the chairs. He knocked over a bottle of fizzy, top is all sticky and then put squirty cream on scones that has melted off the plate and all over the work top, my other son wanted to help me with egg sandwiches but cracked a non boiled egg and just left it there . There is sugar all spilt over the top. I took all the washing up into the kitchen but my family stayed rasher late and i felt unwell so i had to leave the mess i am trying to deal with it now and have just noticed a pot of glitter from the craft box spilt out too lovely

Rae1000 · 12/03/2018 20:41

Probably a roast dinner here. I seem to have so many dishes out & spillages when serving the dinner!

EllieMumsnet · 22/03/2018 16:32
