This activity is now closed

It’s no surprise that often having a family means more mess around the house, no matter how much you try to stay on top of it all. Plus, in many cases there is that one family member that seems to be able to make the most mess possible...realises that person is yourself Blush. With that being said, Caesarstone would like you to tell us the biggest mess that’s been on your worktop and who in your family created it.

Here’s what Jonathan Stanley, Vice President of Marketing at Caesarstone has to say: “It’s impossible to completely child proof your house and you accept that accidents and innocent errors of judgment are going to happen. You can mitigate these by choosing the right finishes. No work surface is indestructible, quartz included, however quartz is virtually non-porous, which means spills will sit on the surface and not seep into it. That apple juice should just wipe off with a cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner and non-scratch pad will remove any crayon works of art. Critically, wine spills from that well deserved glass at the end of day should also wipe off without a trace.”

Was your young DC having a go at painting and decided your worktop would make a better canvas than the paper? Perhaps your afternoon of baking took a turn for the worst when eggs and flour exploded all over you worktop? Or maybe your pet has on more than one occasion jumped up onto the worktop with muddy paws...or even worse decided it was their new litter tray!

Whatever your biggest worktop mess is, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

Any baking that the kids do- mess and used bowls/utensils everywhere!

Fumnudge · 27/02/2018 13:01

Slime.
Even though I ask her not to put it on food surfaces. Even though she's been into this crazy for over a year. Even though I've confiscated it repeatedly.
And she colours it with Sharpies so I now have a variety of coloured blobs stained on the worktop.

Headfullofdreams · 27/02/2018 14:34

Spilled syrup - a nightmare to clean up

Thebluedog · 27/02/2018 14:42

Navy blue nail polish
Pink nail polish (my youngest, now 6 was obsessed with it)
Every conceivable variation of slime (that never works anyway)

My worktop isn’t smooth so making any form of pastry or having to roll anything out meants it comes out rubbish and I then spend ages scrubbing to get the residue off.

Anything with glitter in it Angry

I superglued a view things and stupidly left them on the worktop to dry. It ran down the sides and left several big circles on the worktop. We got a scraper that sat next to it and each time DH or I were waiting for the kettle, microwave, etc. we'd attack it i a bit more. It took about 6 months to remove completely! I'm a lot more careful with superglue now.

I am the normal cause and the mess is usually something like bread dough and lots of flour. Oil is a sod though. Tipped a bottle over. Takes ages to clean it all up properly.

Spilling a new tub of hundreds and thousands, there really are that many and I kept finding them for months...

Babycarmen · 27/02/2018 17:06

When my 5 year old attempted to make her own cereal in the morning and 4 pints of milk got emptied onto my worktop Blush it was everywhere.. trying to get milk out of all the crevices took forever and it stank so bad Sad

potteringpenguin · 27/02/2018 17:12

My science mad 12-Year-old ds trying to fill balloons with non Newtonian liquid to make stress balls (of all ironies). It was everywhere and feels very strange indeed.

The stress balls are cool, though. Squeeze gently and they are squidgy. Punch them and it is really solid. And you can’t be cross because ‘it is educational, Mum.’

WonderLime · 27/02/2018 17:23

Whenever I make bread I roll it directly on the surface - which means I end up with flour everywhere. And it never washes off straight away. There always seems to be layer upon layer of flour that takes days to come away.

mummyretired · 27/02/2018 17:47

I strained 3 pounds of bramble jelly at setting point through a muslin without remembering to put a saucepan underneath. It solidified instantly on the worktop, cupboards and floor.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 27/02/2018 19:04

Large box of black peppercorns, I swear there were thousands of them. I just remember watching in horror as they went everywhere.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 27/02/2018 19:21

It’s always me, dh uses the nickname Katrina as in hurricane Katrina.. lids off blenders - yesterday I managed to puncture a bag of flour taking it out of the cupboard and dropped a pint of milk Grin

I have a athletic cocker spaniel and once made the mistake of putting his ball in one of the high kitchen cupboards. He casually hopped onto the countertop, walked around a bit and nudged the door open. I had no idea that he would even try, it was like a drugs bust on a tv show. Lesson learnt!

Magic sand - only buy for your worst enemy. It can take surface off anything!
Pancake mix

Honey, propolis and sugar fondant supplimentary feed are my grrr mess-on-the-worktop items , courtesy of DS2. They come off (I've got stainless and quartz) but nevertheless. . .

TellMeItsNotTrue · 27/02/2018 21:05

Making fruit smoothies, I was distracted by the phone and as I tried to locate it was asked "can I do the button today?" responded with a yes, not really hearing what had been said and definitely not noticing the finger hovering over the button Shock it was not a pretty sight!

Worst thing was, it was a spam call Angry

Whyisitsodifficult · 27/02/2018 21:55

Wooden worktop and sweet corn skewers, hmm they seem to leave lovely scratches and holes when my DS got hold of one!

Lorddenning1 · 27/02/2018 22:53

Does my cat count, my OH left him in the kitchen overnight with no litter tray, he crapped on my kitchen worktop Confused

daniel1996 · 28/02/2018 07:41

wet Custard Powder - my OH had made 'tubby custard' for my DS and in the process had tipped the deadly substance over my work surfaces, and it had set like concrete, I had to put a wet kitchen towel over it to break it down so that it would wipe off !

Ratbagcatbag · 28/02/2018 08:49

Creative play. Handing my then 4 year old flour and a limited amount f water and food colouring and glitter. To start it was lovely and contained on the table.
I popped upstairs and undestimated my daughters determination to add more water, a bottle of flavoured water turned it all into a sloppy glittery mess, she then climbed down from the chair (more sloppy hand prints) and knocked the bowl too. So all over the table and dropping onto a black floor. It took ages to clean up. She loved it.
Any messy play is now done outside. 😂

Stickladilove · 28/02/2018 09:19

So we made chicken nuggets few days ago, which involved dipping and dusting chicken in 3 different plates. Flour, egg and breadcrumbs.

Pancake batter!! The drippings from the bowl to ladle to pan

sarat1 · 28/02/2018 09:21

I make my own smoothies each morning but as sleep deprivation has set in I have been known to switch the smoothie maker on without putting the lid on!

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 28/02/2018 09:30

When ds2 and I were making a sponge cake. I had held the electric whisk with him. I turned my back for seconds and he'd picked up the whisk covered with cake batter and turned it on, spraying it over a wide area, laughing. He couldn't help me clean as he couldn't reach the ceiling or walls or cupboards...

colleenw · 28/02/2018 11:12

Paint - i was mixing painting and pouring it on a plate for my daughter who was sat at the table. As I turned to give it to her knocked the illuminous pink paint over and it went everywhere and down the cupboard doors and on the floor - which is still stained 3 years later!
