Over the Christmas holiday many of us like to get out of the house and spend time with the family by going to the cinema. Whether it’s because you’re fed up of being indoors or desperately trying to entertain children, ODEON would like to find out what you do when you venture out of the house at Christmas to see a movie.

Here’s what ODEON has to say: “With so many family films out and many families planning their trip to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ODEON wanted to know what Mumsnetters' best memories were of family visits to the cinema over the holidays.

Maybe you got taken to see a particularly Christmassy movie or a big blockbuster you'd been waiting ages to see. Or maybe you've got a great story to tell about visits with your the kids. Share your comments and stories below and you could win a £300 voucher or one of our extra special porg soft toys for the kids.”

So whether you are a regular Christmas cinema goer or have gone on occasion to escape home after over the festive season, share your Christmas cinema memories below.

Everyone who comments on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list) as well as one of 50 soft porg toys Smile.

Thanks and good luck!

Not very Christmassy but Star Wars!

user1495807524 · 28/12/2017 17:31

I enjoyed watching Paddington 2 with the family just before xmas x

rupert23 · 28/12/2017 17:35

we dont usually go to the cinema over the christmas break but my son wants to see jumanji so it looks like we will be going this time. i think its a good idea and gets him out of the house for a bit.

gemmie797 · 28/12/2017 17:52

We had planned to see Daddy's Home 2 over Christmas but we were ill. We ended up going to Odeon Broadway Plaza today to see Jumanji & it was brilliant! I love a post Christmas cinema trip as it tends to be quieter

ladygoingGaga · 28/12/2017 18:53

I don’t often remember seeing films at the cinema, except one Christmas a few years ago now.

Love Actually, went with my sister last minute when Christmas shopping was rained off early.
Laughed and cried, left with a wonderful Christmassy feeling. It has now become a tradition, me and my sister go Christmas shopping, and then come home to mulled wine, throw the DH’s out and claim the sofa to watch Love Actually together, we reminisce over the year and how our lives have changed in the year.

We decided on a Christmas cinema trip, mainly to escape the cold! DCs couldn't agree on what to see, so had to compromise - DD + me went to Paddington, DS & DH went to Star Wars. I think I got the better deal!

dewdneyk · 28/12/2017 19:06

Great Christmas outing a few years ago to see Night at the Museum. Everyone from 80 to 8 came out smiling at the end - a real family success

cathisherwood · 28/12/2017 19:21

I went to see 101 dalmations as a child and I remember being scared to death of Cruella. It is sometimes hard to find a film that suits all ages -even the little ones but I think Paddington fits the bill

smithsurvey14 · 28/12/2017 21:34

I have never been to the cinema at Christmas. 🙅 I don't ever remember going at all as a child, went a handful of times before getting married and taken my daughter twice.

Sezza110 · 28/12/2017 21:40

Harry Potter as a family every year, the whole 8 films. Also Home Alone 2 is a classic we never got bored of.

mummykate87 · 28/12/2017 23:12

We didn't make it to the cinema round Christmas itself as kids but we did go at New Year to see George of the Jungle! I LOVED it. Nothing like going to the cinema with sandwiches packed by your mum!

ncullinane · 28/12/2017 23:12

When I was a child we went to see 101 dalmations at the cinema and our neighbour had gifted us all some sweets which we took, half way through the he film I started to choke on my sweet and was dragged into the light by my panicked mum and luckily they managed to dislodge it! Moral of that story don't take hard boiled sweets into the cinema with small greedy children!

Marie1276 · 28/12/2017 23:16

We went to see The Last Jedi in family and it was such a great film. The kids loved it as much as the parents. We were so excited to go as we only go to the cinema over the festive period once a year. Then a good dinner out in restaurant.Enjoying a good film on a very big screen has become a family tradition for us since some years now as DC preferred watching film on Amazon TV in the comfort of our home.

chrismse · 29/12/2017 03:49

First movie l seen in the cinema was Mary Poppins and l love it. This year l took the grandchildren to see My Little Pony. They were spellbound, there is something magical about the cinema at Christmas.

1st cinema trip was to my fair lady - so how old does that make me!

Quietvoiceplease · 29/12/2017 09:27

I don't remember many times that my lovely dad took us to the cinema, except once. He took my younger sister and I to see Snow White at Christmas, when I was about 7 (mid-1970s) to see the 1962 version I think.
Anyway, as was the norm, the queue for the cinema snaked around the building. There were two screens, so two very long queues.
A lady and children joined our queue behind us, and to make sure she was in the right queue, she asked my Dad 'are you Snow White?'
He, of course, replied 'no - I'm not Snow White but very kind of you to think so'.
It's one of the very few very clear memories I have of my dad, and it still makes me laugh.
We now take my 90 year old dad to the cinema! It is great to immerse yourself in a story, and enjoy an activity with the whole family, from young to elderly.
Happy Christmas all!

I've never attended the cinema with my parents at Christmas but we do try to cram a movie in for all o f us. One of the army bases we were at always had a Xmas Eve movie for all the kids to attend but we are no longer there.

This year we saw the new Jumanji!

holey · 29/12/2017 12:31

I rarely went to the cinema as a child but it was always my aunt that took my sister and I when we did. That in itself was exciting, especially at Christmas for a special treat, as it was something we weren't used to. These days we usually go at some point over the school holidays but don't specifically go on Christmas Eve or anything as my youngest son has his birthday between Christmas and New Year so we tend to tie our visit in with celebrating that. This year we are going to see Star Wars.

Rainbowsaretoo · 29/12/2017 14:03

Sometimes we split up and that's OK. Me and the younger kids went to Paddington 2 and Dad and our eldest went to see Star Wars. We all had fun and then went for lunch afterwards.

Helsbells68 · 29/12/2017 14:12

We only got to see a movie if it is something we really want to watch, one year we set off intending to see a film but the traffic was so bad we missed the screening and had to turn around and come straight home.

ha2el · 29/12/2017 16:47

The epic Lord of the Rings trilogy for 3 years running meant that afterwards nothing really matched up to Christmas cinema, until they released the Hobbit for another 3 years running!

peronel · 29/12/2017 17:17

The family went to see Paddington which lived up to all our expectations! A lovely family feel good film, seen just before Christmas, so a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle for an hour or so.

badgermum · 29/12/2017 18:04

We have an annual tradition now of going to the cinema in the afternoon on Christmas eve as it helps contain the kids excitement for a couple of hours, this year we saw Star Wars the last Jedi

TheImprobableGirl · 29/12/2017 18:35

My favourite tradition is in the couple of weeks after the Christmas rush, to pick a good film, wait for both DD's to be back at school, and disappear into a quiet Odeon for two whole hours with nothing but the film to concentrate on.

A few years ago, I watched a screening of Les Miserables, pretty much on my own in the cinema and it was just magical :)

cather · 29/12/2017 19:38

We have a small independent cinema in our little town and it was always exciting going to see a film, they were always a few weeks behind the big cinemas but we never minded. We were allowed pop corn and Mum and Dad could have a cup of tea or coffee whilst we sat waiting for the film to start. We still take our children and nothing has changed, it is a lovely place and has lots of happy memories.
