Over the Christmas holiday many of us like to get out of the house and spend time with the family by going to the cinema. Whether it’s because you’re fed up of being indoors or desperately trying to entertain children, ODEON would like to find out what you do when you venture out of the house at Christmas to see a movie.

Here’s what ODEON has to say: “With so many family films out and many families planning their trip to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, ODEON wanted to know what Mumsnetters' best memories were of family visits to the cinema over the holidays.

Maybe you got taken to see a particularly Christmassy movie or a big blockbuster you'd been waiting ages to see. Or maybe you've got a great story to tell about visits with your the kids. Share your comments and stories below and you could win a £300 voucher or one of our extra special porg soft toys for the kids.”

So whether you are a regular Christmas cinema goer or have gone on occasion to escape home after over the festive season, share your Christmas cinema memories below.

Everyone who comments on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list) as well as one of 50 soft porg toys Smile.

Thanks and good luck!

My favourite Christmas memory was when we had the most wonderful little local cinema just up the road from our house. It had its own resident cat and really didn't house many people at all! My sister was about 8 and I was 12 and my Mum was always closer to her than to me. However, just after Christmas just my Mum and I went by ourselves to watch Micheal Jackson's Moonwalk at the pictures.

My favourite memory is two years ago when The Force Awakens came out. We took our two children (9 and 11 then) to the midnight showing along with several members of our extended family. We assumed everyone would be dressing up so our group made a big effort - we had Kylo Ren, 2 Jedi, Finn, Boba Fett, Princess Leia and a stormtrooper. We were the only ones dressed up!

Other cinema goers thought we’d been hired for the event though and lots asked to have their photos taken with us!

We created a wonderful memory this year which I hope will become our new tradition. We took our 2 daughters to see A Muppet's Christmas Carol on Christmas eve's eve, none of us had seen it before and it was so enjoyable watching a classic Christmas movie with my children.

It certainly made it feel more like Christmas and it keeps me happy now that the festivities are over and I gear to go back to work

I was brought up in the USA and going to the local drive in movies was very much part of our childhood after would we would do a tour of neighbours looking at the over top decorations.
Now a days back in the UK our local ODEON has a kids club on Saturdays which shows movies at a discount prices. As a family we always go to the kids clubs in the run up to Christmas making a special day of it . I also go with my sister to watch some girly film after Christmas before the new year we have just seen pitch perfect 3

We now have a firm Xmas tradition of going to the cinema on Xmas eve. First one was Arthur Christmas. We seen Paddington 2 this Christmas (fab movie) it’s defo now part of our Xmas tradition but not something we did as children ourselves

I went to the cinema with my dad on Boxing Day a few years ago and when we walked into the cinema it was completely empty - no staff, no customers, no screens on. It was so surreal, all the doors were open to the cinema screens but the ticket booth had the shutters down. We didn't know whether it was closed and someone had forgotten to lock the doors!

mollymoo818 · 02/01/2018 15:27

We have always had a family tradition of going to the cinema to see something Christmassy over the festive period. Even though we now have access to thousands of movies at home on demand there is still something special and magical about going to the cinema and you can't beat going to see a nice festive themed movie over Christmas at the cinema.

FizzySmiles · 02/01/2018 15:36

Watching polar express. I dont even think it was all too long ago but its a christmas favourite now with my 4 year old.

I love cinema visits with my 4 year and even more now that we can get a mix of sweet and salted popcorn.

The first (and only) time I was ever taken to the cinema as a child was to watch Santa Claus The Movie with my mum. It was such a magical experience. I own the dvd of that film now and still love it so much.

I don't think I've ever gone to the cinema during the Christmas holidays. Why would I? There are always loads of films on TV, loads more than usual, and it's not a costly gamble as to whether or not you'll like like them. Plus we've already got in loads of goodies to eat.

Not that that's what Odeon want to hear, I' m sure!

sealight123 · 02/01/2018 19:43

On a weekend my dad would always bring me and my sister to the cinema. We'd eat too many sweets, drink too much fizzy pop and then need the toilet halfway through the movie lol

My dad's biggest memory was seeing Babe. Got to the point where Babe was just about to herd in the big competition...I needed the toilet...I was only about 5 and he had to take me t the bathroom. Came back and we had no idea what had happened haha

EatingMyWords · 02/01/2018 21:35

I went to see the Last Jedi with family ranging from my 8 year old niece to my 82 year old Dad and it had us all spellbound.

Sammyislost · 03/01/2018 10:23

I absolutely LOVE that Star Wars comes out near Christmas, we've loved seeing it the last few years and it's fantastic that so many people go and see it, even though it's not a true Christmas film, the feeling of so many people coming together and having something in common is what the true Christmas spirit is all about!!! Whether they loved it, or hated it, talking about it during festive meet ups is the hottest talk around the table. I'm pleased my children have been able to see the films at the cinema, something I never did, I think they will have these memories of seeing the films at our local Odeon forever!!

ps we LOVED the Porgs!

CathBookworm · 03/01/2018 11:02

we enjoyed a trip to see Paddington 2 this Christmas, (after dashing to another cinema as our first choice was full!) both boys were mesmerised and I loved it too-it made us all leave happy with a warm glow!

AlexanderHamilton · 04/01/2018 09:27

Ds is going to love his porg thank you.

Doodygirl2009 · 04/01/2018 12:08

Unfortunately I never went to the cinema with my parents but I love to take my children now.

MarcoPolo7 · 04/01/2018 13:20

My mum used to take me and my brother to an independent cinema in town that was situated below a pet shop.

We saw a Christmas movie every year which was usually a Disney classic, and our favourite was always Peter Pan. It makes me smile every time I see it, and my own children adore it as much as I did.

whitbyranger · 04/01/2018 13:28

One of my earliest memories is my mother taking me to see Love Me Tender at the local cinema, which is now a night club.

sweir1 · 04/01/2018 19:34

Queuing up one cold boxing day morning to watch the final lord of the rings

Flickabella36 · 05/01/2018 13:00

I think Home Alone is the best Christmas movie- I loved seeing it at our local cinema at a Christmas special with my family

Dormouse1940 · 05/01/2018 15:08

My favourite christmas film memory is also the first memory I have of going to the cinema. Our parents took my sister and I into York one day in December and we saw Miracle on 34th Street (the 90's remake, I'm not that old!). When we left the cinema it was dark outside and all the city glistened with twinkling festive lights.
It was really magical!
First time I'd been to the cinema, not sure any subsequent visit has ever recaptured the magic and wonder of that day.
Lovely memories! I can't wait to take my son when he's a little bit bigger....

Jocelynne123 · 06/01/2018 01:34

We always go to the cinema on Christmas Eve with friends. A few years ago we went to see a movie (the magic emporium one). We paid a fortune and the kids were desperate to see it. ALL three of the children and my husband fell asleep. In fairness the movie was rubbish but I couldn't believe after all that money they were asleep haha. It's a lovely tradition though xx

sophiefx · 06/01/2018 17:11

I remember going to see The Polar Express in 2004. It was the only time my mum ever took me to cinema as I would always fall asleep. It's the first cinema experience I ever had where I stayed awake the whole way through.!!

allibaby · 07/01/2018 09:47

I remember being taken to see Watership Down and I think that was near Christmas. I absolutely loved the film and it made me read the book over and over again.

Elizasmum02 · 07/01/2018 14:43

i go to the cinema every year on the 23rd dec just me and my dad for as long as i can remember
