The team at Aunt Bessie's would love to know all about your Sunday Roast Rituals - what makes a roast dinner go down well in your house? What's the key tip, trick, ingredient or essential item which makes that meal particularly successful? Does your family always sit down at the table? Is Sunday the one day you always insist on everyone being home to eat? And what do you dish up for vegetarians or anyone with specific dietary needs? Do you have roast potatoes even when it's not a Sunday?

Aunt Bessie's say "Aunt Bessie’s recognises how difficult it is these days to get the family together - that’s why mealtimes, and particularly the Sunday Roast, are so important. We’re proud to announce that our Homestyle roast potatoes are Mumsnet Rated*, following testing by members of the site. So whether you whip them out for the Sunday Roast or use them to spice up a meal during the week, give Aunt Bessie’s roasties a try today and see how long you can keep the kids at the table!"

Add your ritual or tip for a great Sunday Roast below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one person will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck

Always make more than needed in case of unexpected guests.

biffyboom · 26/10/2017 17:12

Always make sure to cook huge amounts so that there are plenty left overs for another portion at supper time.

Floods123 · 26/10/2017 21:19

Always use fresh local food instead of frozen crap like Aunt Bessies!

BananaDaiquiri · 26/10/2017 22:06

Every roast must have Yorkshires. Doesn't matter if there's beef involved or not! That's our only ritual.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/10/2017 09:06

Always, always have lots of everything.
Our main ritual though is to set the table really nicely, use serving dishes so everyone helps themselves.
Also, there must be different veg, so a nice homemade caulicheese or some creamed parsnips.
I love Sundays, I actually really enjoy spending several hours prepping and cooking a huge roast for my family in the kitchen, listening to Radio 2 and not feeling guilty about opening a bottle of wine at 1pm.

WowOoo · 27/10/2017 09:09

I always make stock from carcasses and bones. Then my gravy is always good. We always make sure there's plenty as I love picking on leftovers or having it as supper.

StepAwayFromCake · 27/10/2017 09:22

My tip is to get dh to do it. Sort of. I do all the prep, and write down how long each item needs at what temperature. He does the actual cook. He approaches it as an engineer, plans out what goes into which oven at what time, when to put the greens on, etc. He writes it all on a flowchart-spreadsheety sort of thing! I leave him to it.

The result each and every time is immaculate. Nothing is ever over or under done. Marvellous.

Fizzy water in the Yorkshire pudding batter, works a treat.

francislee1976 · 27/10/2017 14:00

Our chicken goes in early followed by the veg, I attempt the Yorkshire puds but have not managed to master that yet. same thing every sunday but we love it

lucyanntrevelyan · 27/10/2017 15:12

We vary the meat as everyone has a different favourite but always have a traditional roast on a Sunday with masses extra cooked so we have leftovers in the week - makes for an easy midweek supper when everyone is eating at a different time if we can all grab the bits we like for '2nd roast'. My DCs will only eat Aunt bessie's yorkshires - apparently they are much nicer than mine!

HelenSw4les · 27/10/2017 16:06

I usually make a list of everything I'm cooking and the cooking start times so everything's ready together. I also double check the list as there's been many a time when we've all finished eating our Sunday lunch to find a pan full of mashed potatoes that I've forgotten to dish out :(

Falconhoof1 · 27/10/2017 16:38

There's got to be loads of gravy. My in laws have a roast with none! I was so disappointed when I had my first Xmas dinner at theirs. I bring gravy now. Wink

JoansSideEye · 27/10/2017 16:44

Make loads of extra roast potatoes, cabbage and carrots and turn them into bubble and squeak the next day!

ha2el · 27/10/2017 18:39

Inherited from my Mother, There will be a Sunday roast cooked every Sunday and consumed not long after mid-day.

PorridgeAgainAbney · 27/10/2017 20:07

We always have a mixture of roasted and steamed veg; DH hates veg to be too sweet so has mostly steamed whereas I'll scoff half the parsnips before we've finished serving and I usually have roasted sweet potatoes whereas he'll stick to the "normal" ones Grin.

Never really do yorkshires; I like them but there are food allergies in the house and I'm not bothered enough about them to look up a decent alternative recipe.

Always tons of leftovers for a shepherd's pie type thing on Mondays.

Apparently it's against the law for Sunday pudding to not be served with custard.

angiehoggett · 27/10/2017 22:46

I use a stick blender for my yorkshire pudding mix it makes a big difference!

Sazzle1984 · 28/10/2017 08:40

Pink Beef, roast pots and Yorkshire puds!!

glmcall123 · 28/10/2017 12:01

We always have a roast on Sunday but wait until the evening after we've been out for the day. It's the only meal that everybody will eat so I do occasionally make it through the week.

strawberrisc · 28/10/2017 14:27

Roasting vegetables! I grew up with boiled veg but roasting vegetables has completely changed our roast dinners. Thin stemmed broccoli, parsnips in butter (for a treat) and even cherry tomatoes with cloves of garlic make the best side dishes.

user1485629191 · 28/10/2017 15:06

Use the chicken bones and any left over veg to make delicious chicken stock.

bosch121212 · 28/10/2017 15:47

Beautiful, tender, juicy meat. Prepare the veggies, par boil the spuds for roasting, but before any of that, there must be Aunt Bessies Yorkshire pud's, my kids won't allow any other brand to be used.

MrsBee77 · 28/10/2017 20:17

We don't have a roast every week but when we do, it has to include roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, yorkshire puds and gravy - those are the best bits!
2 of us are veggie - we usually have quorn broccoli and cheese escalopes.

Hopezibah · 28/10/2017 20:57

the condiments are SO important - Once my inlaws did Christmas WITHOUT cranberry sauce!!! A complete and utter crime in my book!!! I was so shocked that I always popped my own jar of cranberry sauce in my handbag to take round there every year after that.

imacmum · 28/10/2017 22:05

Sunday roast is always a favourite, it feels like Christmas every weekend! We all love the frozen roast potatoes but Aunt Bessie’s stuffing balls are my particular favourite and add to that festive feeling. I do lots of vegetables, no-one minds because I always do oodles of extra Yorkshires, and gravy made from home made stock and home grown veg is always a bonus. In fact we had roast tonight. Only had to call them once!

Tuttytoffee · 28/10/2017 22:07

My Sunday always consists of getting up and prepping the veg, potaots, carrot and turnip, sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. I put the meat in and then boil all veg. Once the veg is done I drain and put it all in a dish and cover. Once the meats done I take it out and leave it to one side. Using all the water off the veg I make a gravy and then wash all pots and pans. Then I sit on my bum and read for the whole afternoon until it's time to eat. I heat it up then plate it up the only thing I make sure is cooking for when we want to eat is my roasties as they are best fresh out the oven. Less mess to clean after you've eaten a load of food and more time to relax on a Sunday evening. Oh and lots of white pepper on my dinner. Pork, chicken, lamb, anything goes. Whatever is on offer! Love my roasts Smile
