The Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate, Part I. £300 Love2Shop voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

To celebrate Fairy Non Bio’s sponsorship of the Mumsnet Talk App, we’re launching the Great Mumsnet Laundry Debate – as with all great Wink series, it's a three-parter. Part I is about how often you wash your bed sheets (as we know, always a hot topic on Mumsnet).

We all know that washing bed sheets can be total faff: there’s stripping the bed, then there’s putting the wash on (are you a warm 40C or a hot 90C type?) Then there’s hanging it out and the struggle for drying space (unless you use the dryer Blush?) After that there’s folding - and, for the super-keen, perhaps even ironing. Finally, there’s getting the darn things back on the bed.

So - how often do you wash your bed sheets? And how often do you wash your DC’s bed sheets? Do you have a specific process? Perhaps you change pillow cases weekly, but sheets and duvet covers every two weeks? How often do you change your mattress protector (Blush again)? Do you use softener?

Whatever your bed sheet-washing process, do share it with Fairy Non Bio in the thread below, and maybe even give us a live update from the Mumsnet Talk App as you're waiting for the load to finish Grin.

Everyone who posts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

oh and generally no softner unless we have some in! and definitely NO IRONING (of anything EVER!)

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 10/08/2016 20:13

Ours gets washed perhaps once a week if it's lucky

The DC's beds gets done when I think they smell Blush

But I'm a right slattern.

Pengweng · 10/08/2016 20:57

I wash ours and the dcs every two weeks (unless something spilled on them etc). I wash in a rotation though so ours one week and theirs the next. Washed on 60 and line dried if sunny but tumble dried if not. Mattress protector on sunny days so i can line dry it as can't go in tumble drier. Prob once a month.

tubbss · 10/08/2016 21:15

Ours are washed fortnightly

Athers · 10/08/2016 22:10

Weekly my kids do a lot of outdoor sport and consequently everything needs washing a lot

buckley1983 · 10/08/2016 23:07

Ours get changed every 2 weeks, LO's more often - as much as needed (i.e whenever pull-up leaks!) but minimum 2 weeks if no leakages! We watch bedding on 40 degrees. I line dry whenever possible as it feels fresher. We do have a dryer, but I don't like using it. I do love ironing bedding, & bed never feels properly made without doing it! Sad? Yes I know!! :)

beckyinman · 10/08/2016 23:17

Once a fortnight - I hate putting the duvet cover back on, worst household job by a mile

LavenderRains · 11/08/2016 07:24

Once a fortnight here. Washed at 50 degrees and line dried weather permitting. I use softener as I love fresh smelling bedding.
What I hate is putting the damn things back on the bed!
I usually wash the mattress protector once a month and I even washed the pillows the other day Shock They came up lovely after a tumble dry.
Nothing better than climbing into a freshly laundered bed.

yummycake123 · 11/08/2016 08:21

We wash bedding every fortnight. We wash at 40C and put it on the line (so we chose a sunny day to wash bedding and towels, otherwise it takes hours to dry in the dryer).

DS (3) is potty trained but still wears a nappy at night (he's 80% wet at night but it's still quite random) so we wash his bedding at the same time. Once we stop the night nappies, I imagine a few accidents will happen, so will probably have to wash his sheets a couple of times a week.

deepcmum · 11/08/2016 08:31

whenever they need washing or on nice dry days when I know I can hang them out.

thesockgap · 11/08/2016 11:31

Our bed: every Sunday, without fail. It's part of my ritual. Strip the bed, first wash the sheet and white (under) pillow cases, then the quilt cover and top pillowcases. Wash on 60 to kill germs and dust mites! Always hang on the line to dry unless it's raining.
Kids beds: usually every other week, no set day but I pick a dry day so that I can hang it on the line.

Traceyedd · 11/08/2016 12:09

I do all the beds weekly on a normal 30 degree wash. That is except for my sons bed as he is still prone to bedwetting so his can be almost daily. I need to wash the mattress protectors and duvets themselves more though, this is a rarity :-o
I dry outside as i dont have a dryer, its on my wishlist. Iron - whats an iron? Lol!

Roshambo · 11/08/2016 14:46

Wow, had no idea people washed bedding so frequently. And I thought I was a clean person. 😬 Now feel very skanky.
So our bed is done about every 4 weeks, sooner if lo nappy has leaked on or anything like that. Ds bed probably the same. Baby's sheet/sleeping bag a lot more frequently due to leakages etc.
Always wash bedding on 60, with non bio, vanish and sensitive fabric softener. Tend to tumble dry to save on time. Mattress protectors get washed at same time as bedding.

Isis1981uk · 11/08/2016 14:50

Confession time....sometimes it can be months between sheet washes for my husband and I!!! For my kids I usually wash sheets etc every 3-5 weeks...still pretty bad!

allthingsred · 11/08/2016 15:14

Mine get done once a week. Usually a Sunday. There's just something I find comforting about getting into a fresh bed at the end of a long week. Always use conditioner on my washing but put in an extra dose on my linen cause I like the fresh smell.

johnchapman1986 · 11/08/2016 16:15

I'm a sucker for the smell of fresh bed sheets so I wash them at least once a week sometimes more often!

supersuperroo88 · 11/08/2016 16:25

Monthly on a boil wash

Longtalljosie · 11/08/2016 16:59

Fortnightly at 40. Ours one week, the kids the next. Mattress protectors when the mood takes me (usually when it's a nice day as the kids' ones don't tumble dry. We have a fleece blanket over the mattress rather than a mattress protector so that will tumble dry.

I have laundry sanitiser but it's only used if there's a wet bed (or worse). I don't iron duvet covers although if I'm very organised I might do pillowcases.

MissPMA · 11/08/2016 20:33

Fortnightly, although maiing the beds is one of my least favourite jobs!

hann24 · 11/08/2016 21:09

I try to wash my sheets every two weeks, sometimes more often in the summer if it's hot

Bestbuddy77 · 11/08/2016 21:18

Because of medication I take, I suffer with extreme night sweats so I can wash my bedding sometimes 3 X a week. I always have to leave my bedding pulled back to air my mattress. When my bed is stripped I spay my mattress with fabreze.
Up until around 4 years ago I didn't use softener, however I always use it now for the wonderful smell it gives your clothes & bedding. I Always use fairy non bio as I have really sensitive skin.
I love to get my washing on the line too!

HopefulHamster · 11/08/2016 23:59

Intend to wash bed sheets fortnightly - sometimes it's more often, occasionally less...

No process but usually nag husband into doing it because I'm lazy and tire easily. Wash at 40 degrees, he puts them in the tumble drier, I like to dry outside if possible because sun cleans and disinfects too.

No softener in this house - I don't really see the point of it!

Usually every 2 weeks in winter and weekly in the summer. Xxx

sarahb8708 · 12/08/2016 01:20

Oh, and I always use fabric softener - I can never bring myself to iron them though! Xxx
