The end of the school year is fast approaching, (or perhaps already here for some of you), and notonthehighstreet.com are keen to hear how your children show appreciation to their teachers at the end of the school year.

Here’s what notonthehighstreet.com have to say: “Whether you're overjoyed about the little one's grades or just want to say thanks for coping with a whole class of kids, we've hundreds of brilliant gift ideas that'll leave teacher smiling 'til next term”

Visit this page they have pulled together with ideas for teachers gifts and tell us which ones you think your child’s teacher would love to receive (and you’d love to give!) by leaving a comment below.

Teachers of Mumsnet, we know you might well say no gift is necessary but if your arm was twisted, we’d also love to know what your ideal end of year gift would be.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 notonthehighstreet.com voucher!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

We used to get the teachers and teaching assistants a card and small gift but it was starting to get too expensive - now its just a card and a tin of biscuits / sweets for them to share in the staff room

Spices001 · 10/07/2016 21:38

We don't buy gifts but always make them aware how appreciated they are

Pigeonpea · 10/07/2016 21:49

Handmade card and a cupcake - she loved showing her teachers how much she cared about them and the teachers were genuinely pleased

hannonle · 10/07/2016 21:55

We don't do this and tbh I don't see that we should. A kind word and good relations with your children's teacher or school all year round is all that is needed.
If the kids wanted to make a card or gift then I'd do that, but I wouldn't ever buy a present for a teacher unless they had done something specific above and beyond their job description that warranted a thank you.

compy99 · 10/07/2016 21:59

a thank you card and a small gift

MrR2200 · 10/07/2016 22:00

As a teacher, I find gifts lovely if a little embarrassing. I’m always sensitive to the feelings of the children who might want to enjoy the feeling of giving a gift but don’t have the resources/support. It puts a pressure on me to find something good for the class too!

The best things are always personal. One child made a mascot for me which I still keep in my class. One wrote a poem about what she liked about being in my class. Those are the sorts of things I treasure. Packs of post-its are great too!

My daughter always made a card with a lovely message of thanks in it which was always greatly appreciated by her teachers. It is not necessary to purchase gifts, it is the thought that counts.

planepointer · 10/07/2016 22:11

A handmade card is nice, but actually buying gifts is a ridiculous trend.

littleme96 · 10/07/2016 22:13

We give small presents, but fairly generic things like chocolates or biscuits with a handmade card.

There are some lovely things on that NOTHS selection, but a bit out of budget when you have multiple members of staff to buy for and you don't know their personal taste.

Starlingsintheslipstream · 10/07/2016 22:50

Bottle of wine most times, unless I'm confident the teacher/ta is a non-drinker. I figure they can always use that.

Donthate · 10/07/2016 23:13

I had a Christmas decoration printed with a picture my 5yo dd had drawn for her teacher. I then wrote a message on the back using a sharpie. My dd's teacher gets in touch every year with a photo of the decoration on her Christmas tree. I'm so glad that it brings her happiness every year as she made my daughters first year at school a joy and gave her a love for learning.

Snog · 10/07/2016 23:33

My dd often made earrings for her teachers, once from Hama beads and once (at Christmas) out of real edible gingerbread lol.
I usually also give the teacher a gift voucher but only if I think they have done a good job, the standard of teaching and pastoral care varied a fair bit from year to year.

avamiah · 10/07/2016 23:45

I have always bought the teacher and teaching assistant small gifts (chocolates) and a card since my daughter was in nursery.
It's my choice to do this and my 6 year old now wraps the present and writes the card and looks forward to giving it to her teacher.
It's a personal choice.
We all have our own thoughts and opinions.

homemade card and jewellery

I think there is too much pressure these days and an assumption that you will gift the teacher - and at our school that seems to be at the end of each of the 3 terms, not just at the end of the year! I'm sure teachers would rather just have a class collection than lots of individual gifts that they perhaps don't want - but I don't believe you should be forced into contributing a certain amount so wouldn't do it.
My children choose a card of their own and I encourage them to write a very personal message to their teacher and TA (this can be quite random but I'm sure the teacher will understand) and they pick their own small gift for them. I have to say, they have been quite good at this and I regularly see the Y1 teacher wearing the scarf my daughter chose for her (in just the right colour). Other than that I would give a teacher something (perhaps wine/chocolates) at the time they did something over and above their job and made a difference in my childs life (i.e., the swim teacher when they won a competition - she had coached them for weeks and driven them to the comp early on a Sat morning).

Homemade cards with a few litres of PVA glue and a skipful of glitter.

MiddleClassProblem · 11/07/2016 10:06

I can remember writing a funny poem in a card for my drama teacher.

My exSIL is a teacher at private school and gets amazing gifts from bags to vouchers, booze to expensive chocolates. Other friends in state school get chocolates and cakes mostly. I think whatever the gift teachers appreciate it. Who would want to end the school year with a tin of celebrations!

tyke1989 · 11/07/2016 11:49

This year we have done a bottle of wine , a gift voucher for starbucks , a house plant as they get lots of cut flowers and probably need to buy more vases to put them in Grin , and a pretty compact mirror oh and a handmade card from my Ds, we also buy his class some supplies this year it's dry wipe markers so they have nice fresh ones for next year.

shroney · 11/07/2016 12:33

a handmade card and small gift that they choose as well as contributing to the class collection for the teacher.

bridge16 · 11/07/2016 12:37

I get my son to make a biscuit box and write messages on the outside then he will bake cookies (with a little help from me) and we take those in for his teachers. He looks forward to doing it and loves giving them :-)

jandoc · 11/07/2016 13:03

my dd likes to make cards for her teacher every now and again

sammylea80 · 11/07/2016 14:19

Home made gifts and cards, they always mean more than shop bought

izzy76 · 11/07/2016 14:29

the kids make the teachers a cupcake and a card and then i buy a best teacher mug for them too it looks really nice for end of term

CraftyPenguin · 11/07/2016 15:03

A handmade card was the best thing I ever received :) It was so thoughtful; there was time and effort put into it, and I still have it now.

Pengweng · 11/07/2016 15:05

The DTs have drawn on some fabric bags as they said their teacher is always saying she must buy some new ones to carry all her stuff but keeps forgetting. I've written them a note to say thanks for making this a fantastic year and will also email the HT.
